We’ve got an update on the Disney news you’ve all been waiting for.
No, it’s not a Tiana’s Bayou Adventure or Country Bear Jamboree opening date (hopefully we’ll know soon!). It’s also not additional information about the new Disney Vacation Club tower at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Nope — we don’t have an official confirmation on which of the new potential lands are actually coming to Disneyland. However, we do have some exciting Magic Kingdom expansion news that means things are moving forward!
Things are HAPPENING, ya’ll! We recently attended an exclusive Disney Imagineering event and got some information on what’s next for Disney. There, they commented on the $60 billion expansion the company has planned for the next decade in its Parks, Experiences, and Products section of the company.
At the event, Disney mentioned that they’re about to file a permit for storm drainage and other foundational work. Foundational permits like this are common before a new ride, attraction, or land so this makes sense as a first step. But it’s the first major update we’ve heard about Disney moving forward with this project!
It’s been confirmed for some time now that Disney definitely has future expansion plans for Magic Kingdom that are “the largest ever for the park.” Disney keeps using the phrase “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain” and compares the scale to things like Pandora — The World of Avatar and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This plan is set to add “new attractions, restaurants, shows, and more!”
In 2022 during the D23 Expo, Disney exec Josh D’Amaro teased some of the new ideas that could come to this expansion. That included potential Coco, Encanto, and Disney villains lands, but nothing has been officially confirmed by Disney.
Back in February, the Reedy Creek Improvement District (which is now called the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District) released its 2023 long-term land use plan. It appeared to show an updated land usage designation for the area just north of Frontierland.
Land that the district once deemed “Unsuitable” is now said to be “Marginally Unsuitable.” Essentially, this means that the land that was once considered unavailable to be developed can now potentially be developed.
However, the area directly next to Big Thunder Mountain has been redesignated from “Suitable” to “Marginally Unsuitable.” Although it can be used for this new project, Disney could have to do extensive development of the land.
This project will likely take years and years before it is complete, but at least we know it’s moving. Stay tuned to AllEars and we’ll keep you updated on everything there is to know about Disney’s expansion plans!
