We love Mara, but it needs some updates to its breakfast menu and lunch menu. I think the lunch/dinner menus needs to have more offerings. The only thing I would eat off those menus were burgers, which got old after awhile. The breakfasts need to have more selection, too. One thing we noticed was that the breakfast offerings were fairly dry.

I stopped into the Mara to grab something for a quick dinner. There was very little to choose from. I got the half chicken. It was half of the smallest chicken I've ever seen! It was really very little food and pretty darn dry. The sides were good. There was couscous and the stewed African vegetables.
I was surprised to see that there was a toppings bar. I'm not sure what those items would have gone on but it was a nice offering.
On the flip side, I got breakfast for my DD and she devoured the classic Mickey waffle. The bacon was good. That made me happy.
As with everyone at AKL, the cast was above par.

Ate at the Mara several times last week. Had the Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken 4 times in 8 days. I would be pleased to receive such quantity & quality at any table service restaurant. The flavor of the grilled chicken was wonderful. Also had a plain cheese flatbread on 2 occasions. Very good. The servers are polite & helpful, and we really enjoyed dining at the outside tables that overlook the pool area.

We ate here 5 times over our 8 day stay in October. We really enjoyed the selection of African inspired food. The Mara salad, African stew and oak roasted chicken were all great.
There are also 2 daily specials that include a fish dish (usually Salmon) and a meat (lamb or ribs). The specials definitely had African flavours. My husband and I like African/Indian food and were in our element. If you do not, you will be limited to the North American selections (burger, chicken fingers, etc..). Our children ate off the kids menu and had no problems.
Mara has a pretty good system for food delivery. You are given a pager after ordering your main course. Then you choose your drinks/sides/desserts and pay. You can then find a table (we loved eating outside) with a console in the centre. Once you are seated you put your pager into the console, there is a beep, and then this is the locator for your food to be delivered to your table when it is ready.
Wonderful system; just like table service (but no automatic Disney 18-22% gratuity put on the bill ;-).
The Mara turned out to be one of our favourite places to eat.

My husband and I ate here a total of four times on our recent trip. He had a Breakfast Bounty Platter and I had the African Inspired Breakfast Platter both times we ate breakfast. He liked his and I loved mine. I loved the pap and chakalaka (stewed sweet tomatoes). The African sausage was yummy, too! I would have been fine if there were less eggs and no grilled tomato. The other two times we ate there, we had the veggie flatbread and grilled chicken caesar salad. We enjoyed both these offerings. We also made use of the refillable mugs. I gave the Mara a "9" because I think they need to have more options on their menu. I also the drink/condiment station needs to be larger. I would recommend it!

Great counter service meals. We ate here twice on our recent stay and really enjoyed it. They offer a nice variety of items and many are healthy options. We really liked the chicken pita, the flatbread and the Mara salad was delicious! It was nice to be able to get couscous as a side instead of fries. The baked goods are delicious and a really great option for dessert when on the dining plan. The only negative is that it can be crowded at lunch and waiting to order, then pay and then find a table can be a little crazy!

We spent a lot of time at Mara during our stay, since we used our refillable mugs daily. The cast members were very friendly. On our last morning when we were using our final snack credits the cast member said that she hoped to see us back there soon! It is a great place to wind down after a busy day at the parks.

We only had a few meals here during our 9 day stay which is a good thing as the menu is very small. And if you don't love African inspired food, your choices become even more limited.
We had dinner here one night and DH tried one of the Chef Specials - ribs with rice and veggies. He really enjoyed them- but the portion was super small. For $13.00 it would have been nice to have more than 4 or 5 small ribs, one scoop of rice and one small scoop of veggies. I had the Vegetable Flatbread - olives, cheese, pesto..this was very good at first but it was SUPER salty...no way could I eat the entire thing and live to tell about it! Kids had the normal burger and nuggest - they are what they are.
We also had breakfast here one morning - egg, cheese and bacon sandwich, Mickey waffles and a side of potatoes. All were fine.
Now I am going to admit something here that may cause me to lose all credibility in terms of reviewing food - but we shared a pack of zebra domes one night...I love coffee and love chocolate..so I thought these litte guys would be the perfect thing for me...but I didn't like them at all! Yikes! I just didn't think they tasted like much of anything!
We did use the Mara every morning for coffee and hot chocolate and every night for Diet Cokes - and it was always clean. They have a topping bar and it too was always well stocked and super clean. The staff was super friendly and very helpful.
We loved AKL so much that the food court would never keep us from staying here - but we would certainly plan on dining elsewhere when we stay here again.

Well my family and I ate here 3 years ago and hated it. We just tried it again and we changed our minds.
Yes the menus are small and you tire quicky from the limited offerings. However, look for the specials handwritten by the chef on top of the glass counter. When we were there, they offered butternut squash soup AMAZING and ribs from Boma. We know because we had them the night before at Boma and I asked the chef and the AWESOME mac and cheeses is from Boma aswell. The soup and mac and cheese can be purchased as a snack credit thats great. Also who can resist a package of 12 zebra domes the famous delectable sinful zebra domes as a snack credit, well we couldnt resist.
We tried the vegetable flatbread. I hated it exchanged for African stew, it was great. Loved the chicken sandwiches and salads. Actually we had so many Q.S credits left over we bought salads and chicken sandwiches for the flight home.
It is also convenient to have Mara by the pool so the kids can run and get a snack chips, pastrys, muffins and ice ceam whenever they want and Mommy can buy a whole bottle of my beloved African wine.
Enjoy Mara for what it is - a quick serivce restaurant with a few hidden gems keep an open mind and enjoy.

The food itself was good. But after two dinners here with our party of 7 we had tried just about everything on the menu. The food was above average for quick service. My favorite was the burger. The quality of beef used was great. The selection was awful though. We have previously stayed at the All Star Movies resort and their QSR had a huge selection of items so we expected at least the same thing from AK. Sad to say their choices were lacking.
I know I marked "no" on would I recommend this place but in all honesty I would suggest eating here once maybe.

Location, limited menu

We ate several breakfasts, a lunch, and a couple of dinners here plus refilled our mugs countless times over our 6 day stay at AKL. While the food is quite good (flatbreads, African stew, chicken) the choices are limited, and after having a lunch and dinner here, we had basically tried everything on the menu that had our interest. By our second dinner, we were mixing and matching sides to make a meal (you can order a standalone side of mac-n-cheese!)
Since we had moved to AKL after a couple of nights at PoP, the selection difference and smaller size for a Quick Service was VERY noticeable.
Given the size of AKL I'd think Mara would be a bit bigger and offer a few more choices. I'd also think at a deluxe property you wouldn't have to walk outside to get to their QS eatery, but then perhaps I'm spoiled by the Contemporary...
In any case, the food was good, it was quite serviceable, and the CMs were very helpful in adapting things to our desires. I would even say it's worth it to have a meal there if you are resort hopping.

My family and I ate supper here on Jan 25th after a day at Animal Kingdom. I had a salmon dinner that I enjoyed very much. It came with a side dish of cous cous which I thought was very good and vegetables in a tomatoe sauce. I enjoyed the meal and after finishing it up with a dessert of Zebra domes (mmmm zebra domes......) went into the hot tub with a full belly and relaxed.

We stayed at AKL and ate one lunch and one dinner at the Mara. We did go every day to fill up our refillable mug with coffee to sip while we waited for the bus to go to the parks, though!
For lunch I had the chicken pita which was good, pretty much what I expected. Very soft pita with grilled chicken, lettuce, tomato. My husband had the cheese pizza flatbread which was very good for a light lunch.
When we stopped one evening for dinner my husband had a cheeseburger. It was pretty much the burger that you could get at most Disney quick serve places, good, but nothing out of the ordinary.
I had the African stew in a bread bowl, which was excellent. I would recommend it. It's savory with just a hint of sweet, and most importantly it was something different. That's what I will get when I go back again!

Ate dinner here on arrival day. Unfortunately the half chicken option was unavailable but we did have chicken tenders and burger for entrees on ddp and fruit cup and 5 zebra domes as pudding (2 credits). Well cooked and quick. Very busy seating area though.
Breakfast here twice. First time arrived at 6.30am (Mara opens at 6am) to be told that although they were open no cooked breakfasts available until 7am. The cheese pastry, cherry danish and croissant we split with a c ouple of fruit cups were very fresh but not what we wanted from a counter service breakfast. Later in the week we did have a cooked breakfast there. The African breakfast was poor but the American bounty breakfast was fine - standard counter service food. The kids waffles hit the spot.
