Disney Pic of the Week: Monorails

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Monorails at Walt Disney World are not ride vehicles. They are an example of what public transportation could be. I remember growing up and reading the city I lived near was considering monorails and how excited I got. Sadly, the cost of a monorail system for even a small city is very high. That is too bad as riding the monorails in Walt Disney World is a future which people back in the 1950’s, Walt Disney included, thought would be a staple of modern cities in the 21st Century. Basically, monorails are just plain cool! Especially orange ones quietly moving overhead through Epcot’s Future World.

  1. I always enjoy the photos on this site.I am new to digital photography and am curious about your settings and would appreciate an occasional comment in why you used settings you did. Why ISO of 3600 for this great monorail pic?

Scott replies: Hi, Chuck! The reason for the high ISO was due to a couple of factors. It was getting late in the day so the light was not as strong and I wanted to fast enough shutter speed to freeze the monorail to get a very sharp image. Thus when I set my camera to 1/200th of a second in Shutter priority mode, it calculated an aperture of f/8 and an ISO of 3600 to get a good exposure. Thank you for your comment.
