I Had No Idea This Is What Happens When a Ride Is CLOSED in Magic Kingdom.

It happens to all of us, but that doesn’t make it feel any better. There’s no worse feeling than strolling over to hop in line for your favorite Disney World ride, only to find that it’s CLOSED.

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

Yes, Disney World rides close all the time. Whether it be for scheduled maintenance, weather, or technical difficulties, you might find yourself face-to-face with a closed ride. Except…no one ever talks about what happens when a ride is closed! So, we thought we would take you into a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what happens during down times.

I used to be a Disney World Cast Member, and I’m here to talk about RIDE CLOSURES in Magic Kingdom. Well, I’m here to talk about ride closures that I experienced while working at the Haunted Mansion.

The Haunted Mansion

I experienced many, many, many ride closures while I was there. Some were technical difficulties and some were due to ashes being spilled in the ride. (Yes, it happens! It’s called a Code A.)

So…what goes on at a ride during a down time? Well, some Cast Members must stay outside to tell visitors that the ride is closed and to prevent them from entering the queue.

On the inside, maintenance teams are the only ones inside the actual ride track — at least at the Mansion. Sometimes, the area leaders will be there to oversee what’s going on. As for the Mansion Maids and Butlers?

Well, if you were lucky enough to be inside during an extended down time, you just got to stand around and chat. Obviously, we had to be ready to get back to work at any given time, but until maintenance fixed the ride, we were kind of just chillin’.

As for overnight closures, there are things that Cast Members have to do each and every night before maintenance starts work on the ride. Every night, Cast Members go in pairs to clean up any trash or dropped items in the ride path. Yep, they walk the ride path! But that’s only AFTER the Cast Members ride the ride to make sure everything is operating as normal. After that, the ride can be powered down to do the aforementioned walkthrough.

Haunted Mansion

Since I, a lowly maid, cannot tell you anything about what truly goes on behind the scenes of the maintenance process, we decided to chat with a Magic Kingdom maintenance worker to give us all the deets.

They shared with us that every single night, there are daily, weekly, and monthly inspections taking place to ensure that the ride is operating as it should. Mechanics have a DAILY inspection that absolutely has to get done, or else the ride doesn’t open in the morning.

They said, “There’s always something to fix, so we stay busy.” So, while all of us visitors are in bed sleeping for the night, maintenance teams are hard at work throughout the park to ensure that the necessary inspections are done in order to open the next day.

Wow! We love learning more about what goes on behind the scenes of Disney World rides, and we love sharing those with you. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date with more Disney news, so make sure to follow along so that you’re always in the loop.
