This Disney Movie Announcement Is Already Giving Me PAINFUL Magic Kingdom Ride Flashbacks

Y’all, we’re not gonna lie — we’re CONFUSED.

Space Mountain

Disney has been known to turn some of its popular attractions into films (Haunted Mansion has done it a few times), and we’ve even seen a Magic Kingdom LAND get its own movie. However, we never expected to hear that THIS Disney ride is being turned into a film.

Space Mountain is one of the most iconic rides in Disney World and Disneyland, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s on its way to becoming a film. You know, the ride that hurts your back and scrambles your brain from all those JERKY twists and turns? Yeah, that ride.

Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, the team behind Amazon’s Citadel and showrunners of Netflix’s adaptation of Cowboy Bepop, have been tapped to write Disney’s live-action adaptation of Space Mountain.

Here’s where things get extra interesting, though — the film has been in development for years. Originally Joby Harold of Safehouse Pictures was writing the film, but now it has changed hands. Also involved in the project are Jonathan Eirich and Ryan Halprin from Rideback (the banner behind Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series) and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures.

But here’s our question — what is the Space Mountain STORY going to be? You may notice that there are no memorable, specific characters on the Space Mountain attraction, so it seems like writers will have a lot of creative freedom with the script. If there’s no mention of the physical PAIN we feel on this ride, we riot. (Kidding, but really — does anyone else walk off this ride with a hint of back pain?)

Inside Space Mountain

Disney’s track record with attraction-inspired films is pretty interesting. You may have forgotten about The Country Bears movie from the early 2000s, plus there was the new Haunted Mansion movie (and an older version starring Eddie Murphy). Disney’s Jungle Cruise movie was pretty popular, while the Tomorrowland film has about a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the new Space Mountain movie will be just as EPIC as the ride.
