A popular History Channel documentary series is launching a season dedicated to Disney history!
The That Built series first premiered on The History Channel in 2012, debuting with The Men Who Built America. In the decade-plus since, the docudrama – a format which combines documentary-style interviews with dramatized reenactments – and had told countless stories about cultural and business developments in American history. Some of the iterations over the years have included The Food That Built America, The Toys That Built America, The Cars That Built America, and The Titans That Built America. Now, the series is getting ready to tackle Disney.
How Disney Built America will debut on The History Channel on April 28th, 2024. According to the network, the series is “a nostalgia-filled ride that paints a vivid picture of the world of Walt Disney and the history-making empire he and his brother Roy Disney built.”
The show’s six hour long episodes will use the docudrama format to focus on various events in Disney history, including the creation of the studio’s famous characters including Mickey Mouse, the revolutionary animation techniques that helped develop Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and how Disney capitalized on early merchandising opportunities to grow its brand, with all of it culminating in Walt and his Imagineers using “groundbreaking design and engineering to construct Disneyland, Walt Disney World Resort, and beyond.”
The series will feature interviews with experts Don Wildman, Margaret Kerrison, Douglas Brinkley, Mindy Johnson, and – arguably most interesting to hardcore Disney fans – legendary Disney Imagineer Bob Gurr. According to the channel, Gurr’s insights will give viewers “surprising insights into the unique innovations and struggles involved in realizing the dreams of a visionary.”
How Disney Built America is scheduled to air its premiere episode – appropriately entitled “The Birth of Mickey” – on April 28th at 10:00 p.m. EST, with the second Snow White-centric episode “Dawn of the Animated Blockbuster” scheduled for the following week.
