Photography Services on the Disney Cruise Line

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

If you have ever taken a cruise on the Disney Cruise Line's Disney Dream, you and your party have had a photo taken before boarding the ship. While you might think this is a nice gesture, Disney uses this baseline photo for facial recognition. This means you do not have to hand a card to any Disney photographer while on the cruise. The photos will be sorted using facial recognition technology into a digital portfolio you can view while onboard. The place to do so is called Shutters and is located on Deck 5.

I took the next photo very late at night so Shutters was not being manned and most people were either sleeping or enjoying themselves down in The District Adult Nightclubs. You can still view and purchase for later pickup your photos using the screens provided (yep, that is my wife and I on the screen).

Here are a few examples starring myself and other members of my family of the photos you will see in your digital Disney Cruise Line portfolio.

Yes, you can buy the frames in the shops on the Disney Dream. While I do not have first hand knowledge, this photographic service is available on all the Disney Cruise Line ships. You will have the ability to view and order photographic products of your photos online after the cruise is over, too. Check with Shutters while onboard for all the latest information or, before you cruise, on the Disney Cruise Line's Photography Services webpage.

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

Mr. Gunnel! I'm just passing on the message that if you and the family went to Walt Disney World more often, everyone would get the answers right!

Wendy Barney, I miss the Skyway too.

Last week's challenge: number #342
Where in the World #342

And here's the answer:

It's one of Pascal's friends for the "Look for friends of Pascal" at the.... well, it has many names but I call them the Rapunzel bathrooms. I once told a guest in Liberty Square that she had to go to these restrooms when she was looking for one. She looked at a cast member who said she should check them out. Still looking back like we're crazy, she left. She came back later and said, "Best. Bathrooms. Ever." :)

Sandie Albrecht, I found 7 of the Pascals. One was really tough because the plants had grown so much around his spot. After the 7th, my husband begged, "Can we go on a ride now?" So I stopped my hunt. I can't wait to finish it!

Great Photography with Mr. Lincoln at Disneyland

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

One of the highlights of my visit to Disneyland in Anaheim, California last year was attending the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln show. A few years ago, the audio-animatronic figure of the 16th President of the United States went through a re-imagineering. In a word, it was impressive. The show borrows elements from Walt Disney World attractions: the Magic Kingdom's Hall of Presidents and Epcot's American Adventure. The Lincoln audio-animatronic moves smoothly and the facial expressions are life like.

The lighting is very moody with bright highlights and deep shadows. Like when photographing any Disney show, use spot metering on the brightest portion of the actor or, in this case, the audio-animatronic. You want to wait for the figure to stop so as to get the sharpest image possible. Even at 1/200th of a second, the image below would have been blurred if the arm or head was moving. I did open up the shadows under the eyes.

Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/200s, f/5.6, ISO 6400, EV 0, 190mm focal length.

Once you have your exposure locked in, you can zoom in and out and compose your photos many ways. The stage lighting will fall where it will which is how you see it in the theater.

Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln is an uplifting show about a dark time in the history of the United States of America.

Where in the World #344

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

Players, you are so great at finding where things are in the Disney parks that I'm hoping you can help a fellow AllEars reader. Someone sent this into the site: "Back in 1999, in Magic Kingdom, stood a blue car in which children could sit for pics. It stood in front of a barn. It is not Gus' Gas Station. Can you please identify that car?" I checked both Disneyland and Walt Disney World: I have found blue cars and barns, but not a blue car in front of a barn. Any ideas?

I can't believe we're halfway through August, Chris Kelly! Ugh, I hate seeing the end of summer.
Vera And Izzy Williams, thank you for such a lovely note!

Jeff Blank: um... sorry? LOL

Return of the Photo Blogger

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

In case anyone noticed I was missing for a while, I'm back. My computer had a very slow and dramatic demise complete with self-shut off at any moment, booting up from the wrong drive, freezing, and mocking me. It took many attempts to transfer my huge amount of images, music, videos, and other important documents to a portable server before finally bidding farewell to the computer.

After everything was safe, I removed it and installed a new system built by my friend. I call it Dave 2.0. Don't tell Dave, he'll develop an ego. Then a mere 2 or 3 days after that, I broke and skinned my left index finger and cut and crushed nerves. Yes, I'm a lefty. I missed 2 weeks of work and was ordered by the urgent care physician's assistant as well as my own doctor to sit on the couch with my elbow resting on a pillow and my hand up in the air. I just went back to work last week.

No, I'm not posting a photo of my finger...unless you send me $20.00. So, that's where I've been. What's new with you?

Recording Details in the Magic Kingdom

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

The Magic Kingdom is full of details and I had fun looking for and photographing on a recent trip. Let's start with the Pirates Bazaar which is the shop you enter after sailing through Pirates of the Caribbean. This shop, like all Disney shops, is a treasure trove of subjects. As I was walking around, I felt like I was being stared at. I looked around and found Captain Jack Sparrow, as portrayed by actor Johnny Depp, looking right at me.

The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad's queue had some updates done during the last refurbishment. I found this longitudinal section diagram of the mountain fascinating and something you will miss using the FastPass+ line.

Fans of the movie, National Treasure, will remember how the company which cast the Liberty Bell was part of the clues leading to the historical treasure. The replica in Liberty Square has the clue, too.

You know about the windows above Main Street USA but have you ever noticed the doors? Like this one which opens into the Magic Kingdom Casting Agency run by one Walter Elias Disney featuring his quote: "It takes People to Make the Dream a Reality".

These are the kinds of details that come and go at Walt Disney World over the years. As fellow All Ears team member Jim Korkis reminds me every time I see him, photograph everything as you never know when it will be changed or totally disappear from a Disney park. Noted, Jim!

Disney Pic of the Week - Castaway Cay

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Sail away on a Disney Cruise and depending on your location, you might stop at Castaway Cay. What or where is Castaway Cay? It is a Bahamian Out Island previously named Gorda Cay and is one over over a dozen Out Islands. Disney bought a lease on the land from The Bahamian government and restructured it. Like other cruise ship companies, this cay is exclusive to cruise ship guests.

After finding your land legs, walk to one of several beaches, meet characters, or participate in water sports. It's all available. Why, there's even a post office where postcards taunting friends shoveling snow back home get a unique cancellation stamp. Talk about perks.

lkb-CastawayCay-Watercraft.jpg
Make your way across the water any way you want, just be back in time for dinner.

Scott will post his photo on Thursday. I know, I'm filled with anticipation, too.

Love, Disney Style

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Unlike the wedding scene in Spaceballs which has nothing to do with love, this blog does. Disney love, to be exact. Yes, we all love Disney and vacationing at Disney Parks with our money collected from working overtime at job number 1 and picking up extra shifts at job number 2 but that's not my angle. No, this calls attention to the love you find at Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World. The photographic evidence speaks for itself but commentary is always more fun.

lkb-DisneyLove-KodaKenai.jpg
Brotherly love is sharing what you have and taking care of one another, even if you started off as different mammals like Kenai and Koda.

lkb-DisnneyLove-Cinderella%20Prince.jpg
So this is love between a prince and a girl who can't keep a shoe on her foot. Talk about luck!

lkb-DisneyLove-Crowd.jpg
Love of music or love of applause? I'm guessing both.

lkb-DisneyLove-Marie.jpg
Kitty love is purrfect. I'm living vicariously through the little girl because from the back, that could be me...years ago. Meow.

lkb-DisneyLove-HerculesMegara.jpg
Forbidden love. I forbid Hercules from loving Megara.

Getting around Disney's Castaway Cay

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

I will be taking a Disney Cruise in a couple of months and with the Pic of the Week being about Disney's Castaway Cay, I decided to continue with the theme and to further acquaint you with the Caribbean island.

The trams will take you from a stop near the dock to Palm Central Station with further service to Serenity Bay. The trams run about every six minutes with the caveat of them running on Bahamian time.

Disney Pic of the Week: Toontown

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

I did not compare Disneyland to Walt Disney World much when I was in California last year. I preferred to enjoy the differences and the sameness of the parks. But (you knew it was coming) Toontown at Disneyland was far better than the one which was at the Magic Kingdom. Disneyland's Toontown felt like something out of Who Framed Roger Rabbit with the rides, gags, buildings and details. Even the water fountain featuring previously mentioned Roger caught my eye.

Lisa will be here on Thursday to share her Disney Pic of the Week about Toontown. I am guessing it will be from Disneyland, too.

Madame Leota's Spirit Captured

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Dark rides frustrate folks who want to take a great shot while abiding by the no flash rule. I know people who have ridden the same attraction many times in an effort to get the perfect or near perfect shot that can be enhanced post production. Honestly, when I'm at Disneyland or Walt Disney World, at most I'll take in the same ride three times within a trip. Most often, it's a one-time effort. So getting the exact shot I want on a dark ride doesn't happen frequently.

I lucked out because the ride stopped and I was able to snag this photo of Madame Leota, psychic medium trapped in her own crystal ball, before we began moving. It was a quick stop too, maybe 10-15 seconds.

If you're not familiar with Madame Leota, she floats about in a séance, calling out to ghosts to appear at the Haunted Mansion.

You can see the image moved as there's a 2nd profile of her face which is cool but I wanted to try and clean it up a bit, remove reflections from the crystal ball, and darken the background. With many clicks, I dodged, burned, and stamped my way to this version by means of PhotoShop.

Donald's Point

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Farewell. Adios. Au revoir. Aloha. Mickey's Toontown Fair closed forever over 3 years ago at Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World.

The local residents liked to garden and, inspired by the incredibly talented horticulturists working at their vacation destination, came up with some cool cacti

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

We're celebrating Labor Day in the US. It's a holiday that celebrates the hard working citizens who contribute to our economy. And we celebrate that hard work by taking the day off. :)

Canada is celebrating Labour Day too! Everyone enjoy their holiday!

In other big news: you need to brace yourselves. I'm starting a diet next week. It could get ugly. From Millan.Net

Sooooo.... this was difficult. It's the logo for Golden Oak, the new community of luxury custom, single-family homes. I'm embarrassed to admit this but I didn't notice the Hidden Mickey in the center until I made the thumbnail last week. :)

Anyone moving there soon? Anyone?
