Where in the World #321

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

Annie Snodgrass, you were in plenty of time to submit your entry. I don't check until Friday morning; I feel that's the safest for everyone to have entered because of all the different time zones around the world.

Exciting news, Players! Paul Moore is going to Walt Disney World and then on the Disney Fantasy: he's promised to bring us back Mickey rice krispie treats!
From Millan.Net

Tom Buck just had his first Dole Whip! Another convert joins the ranks! Somebody get him the T-shirt.

I'm listening to all the Walt Disney World Resort channel videos on youtube. It takes me right back to Disney where I'll put on this channel and leave it on for the music. (After I've caught up with Stacey's list of must-dos). Yes, I am that geeky. :)

I know it took a while before we left the last park but it was worth it. We got Christi Ison's breakfast lasagna, Ashley Collins' Mickey pretzel (did you need mustard?), Duskin Henard's ice cream, Rebecca Keenan's churro, Claire Gregory's whole shopping list ;). By the way, I didn't forget your Mickey balloon!

From last week: Challenge #320:

Where in the World #320

And here's the answer:

We're in the Raiders of the Lost Ark scene inside the Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios! The thumbnail had a little clue: the hieroglyphics show the Hidden R2-D2 and C3PO from Star Wars which, as Vicki Britt and Josh Carney said, is very cool!

Cheryl Costello, if you want to see them, look to your left across from Indiana Jones. They are right before the rope hanging with a trunk, second row from the bottom. Don't forget to look for the Hidden Mickey and Donald also on the left and high up right before you leave the room!

Dave Carriere, I have been trying for years to get a decent picture of these guys! I can't believe I finally caught them! I should ask Barrie Brewer if she would do her Photoshop magic on it to make it look even better.

Jeff Blank, awesome Jeopardy answer! ;)

Kristi Strembicki were the first to send in the correct answer! Congratulations to Kristi and to all our winners this week! Downtown Disney's West Side is more of an adult nighclub experience with restaurants such as Bongos, House of Blues and Wolfgang Puck's at night. There is still plenty of family entertainment with Cirque du Soleil - La Nouba, DisneyQuest, AMC Movie Theaters, Characters in Flight Balloon ride and, the newest kid on the block, Splitsville Luxury Lanes. Splitsville is an upscale, retro-style bowling venue for billiards, live entertainment, a balcony bar with sweeping views and upscale dining options catering to the entire family. Photographing in the World of Disney Store

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

The World of Disney store at Downtown Disney Marketplace is as exciting to photograph in as one of the parks. Especially, if you put a Nifty-Fifty (50mm f/1.8) lens on your dSLR camera. There are all kinds of subjects and compositions to discover while other members of your party do the heavy-duty work of buying Disney souvenirs and clothing. Which reminds me. Do not forget to include them in the fun.

Not into photographing people? You will find plenty of mannequins modeling the latest in Disney clothing and Vera Bradley purses for your photographing pleasure.

Do not forget when using a Nifty-Fifty, its ability to separate foreground or background elements when shooting it wide open at f/1.8. You might find Goofy all decked out for winter through a very familiar shape.

Rebecca Siimith, if your garden looks like this, can I stay with you this Spring? If not, we can go to Cindy Pinki's. Her place is going to look like this. Dibs on the cottage!

Judy Simonsen, Jack Spence is a wonderful person and a great blogger! I'm hoping to be him when I grow up. :)

Disney Pic of the Week: Closed Attractions

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Disneyland is something that will never be finished. It's something that I can keep developing. It will be a live, breathing thing that will need change. -- Walt Disney

Such is the premise on which Walt Disney World was also built upon. Change happens all the time in the parks. I know many people feel this is a bad thing. Other people wish they could bring closed attractions and shows back. If I had my way, I would wish for the Tarzan Rocks! stage show to be brought back to Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Alas, I usually never get my way.

This is a scanned image from a Tarzan Rocks! show I took back in 2000 a few years before I got into digital photography.

Al's Toy Barn Flashback

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

For my part of remembering attractions that are now closed, I turn the clock back to when Toy Story's meet and greet was located off Streets of America. The set consisted of a facade of Al's Toy Barn, owned by bad guy, Al McWhiggin. One can only imagine the non-stop nightmares Buzz and Woddy suffered while smiling for photo after photo.

lkb-ClosedAttractions-AlsToyBarn.jpg

Disney's Hollywood Studios has moved Woody and friends to Pixar Place and the barn was run over by Lightning McQueen and Tow-Mater.

Disney Pic of the Week - Trams

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Beep. Beep.

Driver, you are clear.

Every Disney Parks regular knows the drill and most of us probably answer to honking cars at home with the scripted response. Let's face it, we're special and we love trams. Trams take our aching bodies and blistered feet back to the vast white line-painted endless cement lot where our cars are parked. Or if you're in California, trams take you to the drop-off point near the parking garage and countless escalators leading up to the land of personal automobiles.

Trams also drop us off in Downtown Disney so we can window shop before going through security. Or if you're in Florida, depending on the theme park, trams take you to The Ticket and Transportation Center, or near the security check point and main entrance.

Trams have rules, too. Kids can't sit near the doors. There's no eating, drinking, or smoking on the tram. Should something fall from the tram, alert a Cast Member who will retrieve it for you or find someone else to do it. I'm not sure what really happens, I've never seen anyone lose anything while the tram is in motion. Share your experiences with the rest of us.

That's all I have to say about trams right now expect that I still want a toy version because I'm a Disney Parks geek. Dang! I should have asked for one for my birthday! I must be slipping in my old age.

lkb-Trams.jpg
I wonder if those trams were ever towed.

A few years ago, Walt Disney World parking lot trams were updated to include doors. I saw the doors as a nice safety feature and often wondered why they had not added them sooner. The one I photographed at Disney's Animal Kingdom tram guest drop off was the first one I had seen with doors back in 2010.

Disney's California Adventure Animation Building

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

The Disney Animation Building in Disney's California Adventure is a must for the Disney fan. When I was there last fall, it was not a very busy place especially soon after park opening. I virtually had the place to myself.

Upon entering the building, you are presented with a large room with big screens showing scenes from one of many Disney animated classics. This is the Courtyard Gallery.

The Courtyeard Gallery inside the Disney Animation Building at Disney's California Adventure, Anaheim, California

Nikon D700/Tokina 11-16mm, 1/60s, f/2.8, ISO 3200, EV +0.3, 15mm focal length.

As you can see, this is were people enter into the Sorcerer's Workshop. Since there was no one waiting in the queue. I decided to explore it first. The first chamber is full of interactive displays in how animation was first done. Lots of spinning things here to delight the animation history buff. As I was having fun enjoying the displays, I heard a familiar voice and turned around to see the Magic Mirror addressing the room.

After doing a few voice overs in Ursula's Grotto, we entered the enchanted library of the Beast. In the Beast's Library magical books will tell you which Disney character you are most like and the room changes from the eerie past to the bright future complete with special effects.

Before you leave the Disney Animation Building, seek out the 3-D Toy Story Zoetrope. A zoetrope is a device that produces the illusion of motion from a rapid succession of static pictures. For 3-D, Disney used small statues. When seen in person and at the proper speed, you see Woody and the gang moving in real space. Knowing how static that would look in a still image, I used a slow shutter speed to show you have fast the zoetrope was moving.

Where in the World #324

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

You know I was wearing plenty of green proudly, Patti Mccaffrey, for St. Patrick's Day! :)

I love you guys! You actually sent in answers for where the baby duck was! That's amazing because, as you know, baby ducks are all around Walt Disney World. But you played along so here we go!

Here was the picture from last week:
AllEars.net

And here's the answer:
AllEars.net

He, his mom, and his brothers & sisters were crossing Main Street in the Magic Kingdom! They had just come from the Crystal Palace. Notice everyone stopped to give them a clear path to cross. If you got it right, I added you to the winners' drawing for March!

Sandie Albrecht, may I share your story? "We told a cast member at one time that a bunch of baby ducks couldn't get out of the pond in [the Innovations West] area. The next day there was a little ramp going from the water to the top of wall at that pond." THAT is Disney and why I'm proud to be a fan.

Grumpies Groupies, good answer. ;)

Have you Players ever seen the picture where a momma duck and her babies walked past Donald Duck so he obediently followed her?

Smitty, get down! They're shooting it out!

Jennifer Rowell, I could hear your Jimmy Stewart voice! I got chills because it was so spot on! And Christi Ison, I bet you had some good reading material in that bio!

Gail States, why did your answer have dollar signs? Were you bribing me? Good news: I'm cheap! :)

Disney Pic of the Week: Snacks

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Here is a theme we can sink our teeth into. Snacks at Disney theme parks are legendary, from the smell of popcorn on Main Street USA to the famous Turkey Legs found in most of the parks. Not to be outdone, the Disney Cruise Line features many snacks on board. There is Eye Scream Treats and Frozone Treats found on Deck 11 for ice cream and sweet treats for the entire family. Down in the adults-only nightclubs on Deck 4, you can find late night snacks including these luscious chocolate covered strawberries.

What is your favorite snack or snacks at a Disney theme park or cruise?

Lisa will be here on Thursday to share her Disney Pic of the Week on Snacks.

Easy Photography Special Effects

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Sometimes the cooler shots come along by accident. While visiting the China pavilion in Epcot, I approached a figure in a glass display. As I moved, I immediately noticed that the seam in the glass allowed me to have some fun.

What I first saw.

Slight adjustment in my position and I doubled the gentleman's face.

Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Sandwich

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World, January 2013. A young-ish woman visits Walt Disney World for the first time. Although plentiful in Disneyland where she spends not enough time, she decides to consume a Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Sandwich in Florida.

A closer look shows how the treat was carefully unwrapped and how happy Mickey was to be free from the wrapper, not to mention the freezer.

Aww. The poor thing never had a chance.

World Showcase Details

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Epcot's World Showcase is a treasure trove of photographic opportunities. I find new things to photograph in the countries with every trip. Here are three examples.

I photograph lots of t-shirts when traveling. I like to use them for online galleries and slideshows. This t-shirt I found in an outdoor kiosk at the Canada pavilion would be a good one for an introduction slide to Canada.

When people think of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, I believe the famous Gargoyles which "guard" it come to mind. Outside the entrance to Impressions de France at the France pavilion sits a replica of the Spitting Gargoyle which may be the most famous resident of the cathedral.

The Morocco pavilion is one of the most detailed around the World Showcase. The tile work is beautiful and colorful. Add a touch of falling water and I could not resist.
