Disneyland Fantasy Faire Preview

laura%27s%20masthead%20copy2.jpg

The new Disneyland Fantasy Faire, where guests can meet, interact, and learn the stories of the Disney princesses, is under construction in the former Carnation Plaza Gardens area of Disneyland. I had the opportunity to preview the new area, which is scheduled to open on March 12, 2013.

Fantasy Faire is located at the end of Main Street between Frontierland and Sleeping Beauty Castle. As you can see in these photos there is still quite a bit of work to be done before opening, but the basic structures are there. This is the exterior of Royal Hall; the Princess meet-and-greet area is inside. The unfinished pedestal in front will be the location of the Tangled Tower sculpture. Rapunzel's hair will appear to be wrapped around it, and at night her hair will light up with twinkling lights.

There's also some fun elements, like Figaro (Gepetto's cat) sleeping in a window, and occasionally waking to interact with a bird, and Clopin's Music Box, a mechanical contraption where guests can turn the crank and watch a scene from The Hunchback of Notre Dame come to life.

Inside Royal Hall are several areas where guests will be able to meet some of the Disney princesses. (There's no Fastpass for this - just get in line and wait your turn.)

Disneyland Fantasy Faire Preview

In the video below,Michel Den Dulk, Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering spoke to us about Fantasy Faire and some of the design elements, while Show Director Christopher Utley gave us some details on the shows that will take place in the Royal Theater.

There will be two different shows in the Royal Theater, telling the stories of Rapunzel and Belle. Disney describes the show as "Renaissance vaudeville" featuring a pair of storytellers: Mr. Smythe and Mr. Jones. They play most of the parts, joined by Rapunzel or Belle. After the show the princess will remain for a time to greet guests. The shows are 15-20 minutes long. There will be six shows per day, three for each princess.

The Fairytale Treasures shop will offer princess dresses and other accessories.

There's a food cart called Maurice's Treats - with food items inspired by the inventions of Belle's father Maurice.

Disneyland Fantasy Faire Preview

There are bread twists, like cheddar cheese garlic and strawberry almond cream (those shown below are samples and not full-size). I tried the cheddar cheese-garlic and it was very good. These will be served hot to order.

Disneyland Fantasy Faire Preview

There's also a signature drink - Boysen Apple Freeze (A play on poison apple...) I had a sample of this...It's similar to the Red's Apple Freeze served at the Cozy Cones and the Le Fou's Brew served at Gaston's Tavern, but I have to say this is my favorite of the three - I really enjoyed the apple-berry flavor. I could do without the foam on the top, though - I don't think that really adds anything. It is available in a souvenir princess or Gaston cup, or in a regular cup.

We also heard some more details about Mickey and the Magical Map - the new show opening in the Fantasyland Theater this summer.

Disneyland Fantasy Faire Preview

Michael Jung, Vice President, Theatrical Development, Walt Disney Imagineering describes the show in this video clip.

It really sounds interesting - in addition to newer characters like Tiana and Rapunzel it will also feature some of the characters we don't see in the parks very often these days, like Pocahontas, Mulan, and King Louie. (Pocahontas and Mulan arguably have some of the best "Princess" songs ever, which will be included in the production.)

Thanks for the Memories, Tony Baxter!

jeaninebanner.jpg

One of the very first events I covered for AllEars on my own was the return of Captain EO to Disneyland's Tomorrowland. I figured I was just going to take a few photos, see the movie, and listen to presentations--instead it turned out to be pretty much solely interview opportunities, which I found paralyzingly intimidating. To compound the situation, the interviews included one with Tony Baxter--TONY BAXTER! The Senior Vice President, Creative Development, Walt Disney Imagineering Tony Baxter! The guy who did Big Thunder! Splash Mountain! Star Tours! Indiana Jones! The 1983 redo of Fantasyland! Disneyland Paris, for gosh sakes!

P1070011.JPG

It all turned out happily, thank goodness, in spite of me. Mr. Baxter was as gracious as anyone could wish, and probably more so than I merited.
http://land.allears.net/blogs/lauragilbreath/2010/02/captain_eo_returns_to_disneyla_1.html

Last week, Tony Baxter, Senior Vice President, Creative Development, Walt Disney Imagineering, announced his departure from his full-time position at WDI with this letter:

http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/showthread.php?193041-Tony-Baxter-s-Letter-of-Resignation&p=1781369#post1781369 As is consistent with the rest of his career, it is marked with intelligence, insight, and affection both for his work in the parks and the people who helped him create so many amazing attractions.

P1060750.JPG

While it's beyond my capabilities to give his work with WDI the overview and historical context it deserves, I can say that having started early enough to benefit from working with some of Walt's original Imagineers and having stayed late enough to mentor today's up-and-coming Imagineers, he served as a valuable bridging point. He was able to incorporate the integrity of the older ideals and values as regards Disney's entertainment aspirations with newer technology and methodology to create projects that had both depth and breadth of appeal. Even in times when it seemed others in the company had abandoned all other concerns for the quickest way to cash out, he represented a force that pushed for quality and the Disney Difference which, in the end, is really why I'm here writing (and presumably you're here reading) about Disneyland and not Six Flags.

P1050133.JPG

One of the events where he featured prominently was at last year's 20th Anniversary celebration at Disneyland Paris, where he gave talks to both the NFFC group specifically, and to the park in general.

http://land.allears.net/blogs/lauragilbreath/2012/06/disneyland_paris_special_event_1.html

P1050045-1.JPG

Even more recently, at the last Destination D, he was part of a presentation on some of the original WDI members who worked on the parks, as well as a group interview afterwards, addressing some of the modern-day frustrations today's designers face.

http://land.allears.net/blogs/lauragilbreath/2012/08/d23s_destination_d_75_years_of.html

While I certainly don't know him personally, I did have the chance to meet and interview him again a few times more over the years, and he never ceased to be as kind and thoughtful to even the hundredth person looking for a signature as he was back at Captain EO.

P1020303.JPG

How Disney will adapt to his absence remains to be seen--I can only hope that they take his espoused philosophies to heart and use them to continue to create the type of attractions that are as meaningful and relevant to future generations as the ones Mr. Baxter gave us. For Mr. Baxter himself, it seems hardly necessary to wish someone luck who has the talent and passion he's always displayed with WDI. Perhaps instead we can simply say "have fun, and come back soon."

photo.JPG

Over at the always informative/entertaining blog Progress City USA, D23's Michael Crawford has his own tribute to Tony Baxter, in which he says he will pass on any comments to Tony Baxter. If you have any well-wishes to express to him, I encourage you to check out http://progresscityusa.com/2013/02/04/full-steam-ahead-mr-baxter/ and leave them there.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/01/13

laura%27s%20masthead%20copy2.jpg

Contributing photographer Jason of disneygeek.com sends us these photos from his trip to the parks on Friday, February 1, 2013.

I arrived at the Disneyland Resort just after lunch and opted to walk to the parks through Downtown Disney. Over at the Disneyland Hotel the walls that were around the end of the Fantasy Tower are all gone and the area cleaned up.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/01/13

They are still working on the park area where the ice rink was.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/01/13

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/01/13

No real visible progress on the Fossil store.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/01/13

Waiting to get into Disneyland. The lines were moving rather slowly this afternoon and were backed up beyond the Monorail beam.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/01/13

The waits around 1:35pm, not bad at all with the longest posted being 25 minutes only.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/01/13

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/01/13

A look at the new loop (I know the quality is terrible... but you can get the drift of what is being shown, the quality is my fault not with the capture).

Wonder if this video will be altered with Tony Baxter leaving WDI.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/01/13

These Never Tire benches looked new to me. There were three out by the Flying Tires viewing area.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

laura%27s%20masthead%20copy2.jpg

Contributing photographer Jason of disneygeek.com sends us these photos from his trip to the parks on Friday, February 15, 2013.

To kick off the President's Day weekend I spent Friday afternoon/evening at the Disneyland Resort. It was one of those winter days where you are reminded how nice Southern California is, the temperature crept up to the low 80s and there was a pleasant breeze most of the day. The crowds at the parks were on the heavy side due to the holiday weekend and great weather.

True Love Week was in full swing around the Resort still as part of the Limited Time Magic campaign. This included the return of some Valentine decorations to Town Square.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

As well as a photo meet and gree with Mickey and Minnie (who were alternating with Donald and Daisy) with a heart backdrop.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

At the point in Town Square was a large heart to take pictures around. Thought it was fun a picture catching a glimpse of Dale through the crowd in the background...

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

The castle had some banners for True Love Week.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

The Fantasy Faire project is racing along toward the announced opening date of March 12th. They were working well into the evening in the area.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

The waits around the park were on the high side, 40 minutes for the Jungle Cruise this afternoon.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

There are now signs up at all Fastpass distribution areas reminding you that you are to return during the window on the ticket. Cast members are starting to enforce the end time which is a new practice for Disneyland, WDW started doing this last year.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

The Bayou Bash is over and New Orleans Square is back to normal.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

The Billies have returned to the Golden Horseshoe and the menu has returned to normal too (minus the cheese sticks).

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

One of the Big Thunder Ranch residents was out near the Big Thunder entrance.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

The Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree area had performing arts groups today. Plus a couple of Country Bears roaming around.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

The Mad Tea Party has returned. Anyone ride yet? Did they change the resistance again?

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

For True Love Week Princes were escorting their Princesses at the Meet and Greet area along "small world" way. Here are several pictures of the royal couples.

The Opera House was being turned into a Cinema for the evening for an Annual Passholder screening of Lady and the Tramp, because of these showings Great Moments ran its last show at 3:00pm.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

To celebrate Presidents weekend I had to stop by and watch Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.

There were a fair number of tourists in the showing I attended. The Cast Member doing the introduction to conclude his spiel said now reach below your seat to find your 3D glasses and more than half the audience bent over to look for them!

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

Made my way to DCA.

They announced an Annual Passholder Preview for the Oz sneak peek this evening. It was on the AP website and there were signs in the park.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

The Hyperion Bridge paint scheme is continuing to evolve. Not sure where it is going...

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

Disney Junior is currently closed for an update.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

Time for the clip which ran about 8 minutes.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

For True Love Week there was a brief (2 minute) castle projection/light show. Here is a video of the event. The castle lighting effects looked better in person but you can get a feel for it and the projections with this video.

Stills of the event.

Fantasmic returned this evening. I managed to find two sets of Glow Ears to stand behind and see how they interact with the show. As I looked around the audience I saw maybe a handful of them only.

Disneyland Resort Photo Update - 2/15/13

Since the Mark Twain is out of service the characters all take to the stage for the finale.
