Florida Runners Toast Dominance at Inaugural Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon

Washington, D.C., Competitor is Top Woman Finisher Among Sold-Out Field of More Than 11,000 Runners

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Oct. 2, 2010) - Anton Van Zyl from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Matthew Dobson from Jay, Fla., were the first two finishers Saturday night in the inaugural Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla. In the women's division Melissa Wisner from Washington, D.C., crossed the finish line first, with a 1:32:22 time.

Van Zyl and Dobson provided plenty of drama before Van Zyl pulled away. Van Zyl ran a 1:14:51, while Dobson finished close behind with a 1:15:04. Adam Siepiola from Garden City, N.Y., came in third (1:15:12).

"It was real close down the stretch," Van Zyl said. "We were neck and neck. I put on a hard charge about a half mile out. The crowd was fantastic and it was a great finish."

Wisner won easily. She crossed the line nearly three minutes ahead of Sheila Sullivan of Daytona Beach, Fla., who posted a time of 1:35:16. Caterina Lancia of Miami, Fla., was third (1:36:58).

"I've never actually run a night race before, it's very much a different experience," said Wisner. "All the lights made it very exciting."

The half marathon, the last of four runDisney events this year, capped a sold-out weekend full of events that featured more than 14,000 runners, including more than 11,000 that ran the 13.1-mile race through multiple Disney theme parks. The half marathon was the first runDisney half marathon held at night and the first to involve a relay option. The runners celebrated their accomplishment with an exclusive after-hours party at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.

"I always like coming to Disney," Van Zyl said. "I love food, I love wine. That's why I'm here." The race began at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and weaved through Disney's Animal Kingdom and Disney's Hollywood Studios before finishing at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.

All finishers received an inaugural Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon medal and had the opportunity to experience the Health and Fitness expo at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The expo included seminars on training techniques from Jeff Galloway and the latest running equipment.

Registration for the 2011 Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon starts in February. The half marathon weekend will take place Sept. 30-Oct. 2.

Custom Homebuilders Purchasing First Homesites, Signaling Upcoming Sales at Golden Oak at Walt Disney World® Resort

GoldenOak.jpg

Lake Buena Vista, Fla., (September 28, 2010) - Seven prestigious homebuilders have been selected by Disney to design and construct the luxury homes in the unique resort community of Golden Oak at Walt Disney World® Resort. Each of the builders is purchasing initial individual homesites, allowing construction of the first showcase and spec homes to begin immediately.

Since Disney announced the project in June, the company has seen significant interest from potential buyers. Inquiries have come from as far away as Brazil and England - and domestically from New York to Texas to California. The selected builders are currently designing home plans in preparation for the launch of homesite sales later this year.

"The homebuilders for Golden Oak have impressive track records of success and dedication to the highest level of quality," said Page Pierce, vice president, Disney Resort Real Estate Development. "We look forward to seeing their beautiful homes come to life in Golden Oak through their fine craftsmanship and signature styles."

Golden Oak will initially consist of three types of single-family homes: Village, Estate and Grand Estate Homes. Village Homes will capture the romantic look of a Mediterranean village on homesites up to one-quarter acre. Estate Homes, on approximately one-half acre homesites, will offer a variety of architectural styles including Tuscan, Spanish Revival, Venetian, Italianate, Dutch Colonial and Island Colonial. At up to three-quarters acre in size, Grand Estate Homes will include architectural styles consistent with Estate Homes and will accommodate the needs of large families.

The custom homebuilders for the Golden Oak Village Homes are CAHILL (www.cahillhomes.com), Goehring & Morgan Construction, Inc. (www.goehringandmorgan.com), and Issa Homes, (www.issahomes.com).

The custom homebuilders for Golden Oak Estate Homes and Grand Estate Homes are Derrick Builders, Inc. (www.derrickbuilders.com), Jones-Clayton Construction (www.jones-clayton.com), J. Richard Watson Construction Company, Inc. (www.jrichardwatson.com), and Ray Coudriet Builder, Inc. (www.raycoudriet.com).

These experienced custom builders are creating residential design concepts for interested buyers and showcase and spec homes, consistent with the unique architectural aesthetic of the Golden Oak community. Disney conducted a rigorous process to select the homebuilders for Golden Oak. Superlative experience building custom luxury homes in high-end Central Florida communities, expertise in the specific architectural styles planned for Golden Oak and a demonstrated reputation for quality design and construction were some of the criteria used in the selection process. Golden Oak may invite additional builders in the future, as the community and demand grow.

What's in a Name?

Disney also unveiled the handcrafted sign at the entrance to Golden Oak, the result of many hours of artistry. The name, Golden Oak, is inspired by Walt Disney's Golden Oak Ranch in Newhall, California, where some say gold nuggets were found in 1842, a filming location for segments of the Mickey Mouse Club in the 1950's. In addition to the ranch's official use for The Walt Disney Company, the ranch served as a place of respite and relaxation for Walt and his family. Golden Oak at Walt Disney World® Resort will offer families that same sense of magic and enchantment that Walt believed to be so important. Beyond the literal connection to Disney's Golden Oak Ranch, the iconic oak tree symbolizes the family, stability, and heritage that this community will encourage. The tree also pays subtle homage to Walt's "Dreaming Tree," the tree in his childhood hometown that provided shade for his many hours of daydreaming.

Bookings Begin Oct. 15 for Unique New ‘Wild Africa Trek’ at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Wild Africa Trek

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Navigating a rickety footbridge over a river chasm can be dicey enough for explorers. In an all-new Disney adventure, what lurks below that bridge may quicken their step to get to the other side: Crocodiles!

A ravine of menacing-looking crocs, pools of hippos, bushwalks along untracked terrain and other thrills await guests on Wild Africa Trek, a unique wildlife experience scheduled to launch in early 2011 into the deepest, most-remote reaches of Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Reservations can be booked beginning Oct. 15, 2010, for the three-hour, expert-led adventure that will immerse guests in the realms and wildlife thrills of far-off Africa - without leaving Walt Disney World Resort. In small groups, guests on the Wild Africa Trek will enjoy an "up-close-and-personal" experience with African wildlife species that make their home in Pangani Forest as well as other areas of the park's Harambe Wildlife Reserve.

As part of the adventure, guests will clip onto a lifeline as they step to the very edge of a cliff to get amazingly close to the hippos and crocs waiting just below. Talk about cliff-hangers!

Adventure-minded guests will have the experience of a lifetime as they get immersed in an authentic African safari experience that only Disney can deliver," said Michael Colglazier, vice president of Disney's Animal Kingdom. "We are thrilled to be offering this unique outdoor adventure aimed at active vacationers, taking interactions with the incredible animals that inhabit the Harambe Reserve to the next level and literally blazing new trails in our park."

Highlights of what's in store for guests on this add-on adventure:

* Trekking with experienced guides through areas of Harambe Wildlife Reserve that aren't explored during regular Disney's Animal Kingdom experiences.
* Navigating through fern and vine forests on a bushwalk that sets a course for adventure.
* Clipping into a harness attached to a safety line, crossing a seemingly precarious rope bridge over the Safi River and cliff-hanging at the edge of gullies that are home to hippos and crocodiles.
* Experiencing the thrill of "over-landing" in customized open-air vehicles following the edge of a magnificent, wide-open savanna.
* Unwinding from an unforgettable adventure at a private safari camp for wildlife viewing. At this station elevated above the savanna, guests savor sample tastes of Africa as their adventure draws to a relaxing and satisfying close.

Wild Africa Trek will be offered several times daily at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Groups will be kept small, consisting of no more than 12 trekkers per safari.

Reservations for Wild Africa Trek can be arranged by calling 407-WDW-TOUR (939-8687). Pricing for this unique adventure will vary seasonally. Guests who reserve a booking from Jan. 16-Feb. 26, 2011, may take advantage of an introductory offer starting at $129. Park admission is required for participants.

Dreams Come True for Two Walt Disney World Cast Members Selected for 2011-2012 Ambassador Team

Prestigious Honor Reflects 45-Year Disney Tradition

wdw2011ambassadors.jpg

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Oct. 15, 2010 - Before an audience of their peers, family and friends, the next chapter in a true-life Cinderella story unfolded this morning at Magic Kingdom Park as two Walt Disney World Cast Members were chosen to step into the time-honored role of Walt Disney World Ambassador. During a special ceremony in front of Cinderella Castle prior to park open, Norman Vossschulte and Jennifer Mason were named as the 40th Walt Disney World Ambassador Team and will serve from Jan. 1, 2011 - Dec. 31, 2012.

"Our Walt Disney World Ambassadors represent our resort, their fellow cast members, and the heritage, tradition and values of Walt Disney. It is a role filled with great significance" and great responsibilities," said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "Those chosen as Ambassadors are truly talented individuals who represent Disney Cast Members with purpose and grace, and bring the magic of Walt Disney World to the world at large."

The 45-year tradition of the Disney Ambassador program is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those selected. Individuals named as Ambassadors accept a two-year-long assignment representing Walt Disney World Resort's approximately 58,000 Cast Members and share the magic of Disney throughout the community and the world. Typical Ambassador responsibilities include making hospital visits and appearances with Disney characters, participating in community outreach events and recognizing Cast Members' milestones and special achievements.

Every two years, thousands of Cast Members are invited to participate in the Ambassador recruitment process that starts with information sessions and ends with a ceremony announcing the new Ambassador team.

Following a two-month training, the 2011-2012 Ambassador team will start their year with a full schedule and can expect to participate in more than 3,500 events for various occasions.

Norman Vossschulte steps into the Ambassador role from Disney's Hollywood Studios, where he currently is a Jedi Master at the Jedi Training Academy. Born in Berlin, Germany, Vossschulte has lived all over the world, holds baccalaureate degrees in physical science and biology and trained as an actor in New York City. His Disney career began in 2008 when he became a safari driver at Disney's Animal Kingdom Park. Vossschulte went on to join the Guest Relations team at Epcot and eventually Entertainment.

Jennifer Mason currently oversees the Magic Kingdom Custodial team and ensures the place where dreams come true is kept clean. Born in Alabama, Mason grew up in Clearwater, Fla. and spent countless days at the Walt Disney World Resort with her family. After graduating from Florida State University, she became a member of the opening team of Disney's Animal Kingdom Park in 1998. Throughout her Disney career, she has served as a leader for several Operations teams at Disney's Hollywood Studios and Epcot.
The great honor of being selected as a Disney Ambassador began during the 10th anniversary of Disneyland, when Walt Disney himself was overwhelmed with requests for appearances and media interviews. As a result, he selected the very first Ambassador in 1964 and the tradition has continued ever since.

These awards have included all aspects of the operation from dining and entertainment, to youth activities and spa facilities. Harlem Globetrotters Announce Two Games at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Oct. 20, 2010) - The Harlem Globetrotters announced today a two-game Harlem Globetrotters Holiday Special Event at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World prior to the tip-off of their 2011 North American tour.

The Globetrotters' doubleheader at Disney is Saturday, Nov. 27, two days after Thanksgiving Day, with an afternoon matinee at 2 p.m. followed by an evening game at 7 p.m.

The games mark the return of the Harlem Globetrotters to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex after a special performance this past February that was a part of the ESPN re-launch of the complex. That performance featured NFL player Chad Ochocinco, former LPGA player Annika Sorenstam, U.S. soccer player Brandi Chastain and Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic of ESPN's Mike and Mike show in the Morning playing alongside Disney characters.

Over their 84-year history the Harlem Globetrotters have played more than 25,000 games and have featured NBA players and Hall of Famers including Wilt Chamberlin, Nathaniel "Sweetwater" Clifton and Marques Haynes on their roster. The Globetrotters are renowned for popularizing many of the game's best elements - like the fast break and slam dunk - and the Globetrotters are always exploring ways to bring new innovations to the game as they enter their 85th year of touring.

Tickets for the Harlem Globetrotters Holiday Special Event games go on sale today, one of which will air on ESPN2. Upper level tickets are $25, lower level tickets behind the baselines are available for $30, lower level tickets along the sidelines are $40, second row tickets in the lower level are $50 and courtside tickets are available for $75. Fans wishing to purchase tickets for the Disney games and other dates on the 2011 Globetrotters tour can be purchased through all Ticketmaster outlets.

The Villas at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel Sells Out of Available Inventory

CELEBRATION, Fla. (October 20, 2010) - Today, Disney Vacation Club announced that one of its newest resorts, The Villas at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel, recently sold out of all available vacation ownership inventory. The 50 two-bedroom equivalent villas mark Disney Vacation Club's first venture to the West Coast and the Disneyland Resort.

"We are very pleased with the success of our first West Coast resort," said Disney Vacation Club President Jim Lewis. "Families have enjoyed visiting the Disneyland Resort for decades and Disney Vacation Club members who own at The Villas at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel will enjoy the savings for decades to come."

The Villas at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa opened in September 2009 as the first stage of Disney Vacation Club's westward expansion. Designed as part of an expansion of the existing hotel, the villas complement the original California Arts & Crafts architecture, while offering members and guests a variety of Disney Vacation Club amenities, such as kitchens, living and dining areas, and other home-like amenities.

Located just steps from Disney California Adventure Park, many of the villas overlook the transformation of the theme park. Beyond the debut of "Summer Nightastic" and "World of Color" this summer, Disney California Adventure Park is poised to premiere The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure in 2011. Additionally, summer 2012 is scheduled to bring even more excitement to the theme park with a new front entryway greeting park guests and the opening of Cars Land, a 12-acre expansion inspired by the Disney-Pixar blockbuster "Cars." Disney Vacation Club members and guests who visit Disney California Adventure Park will be able to experience these exciting changes firsthand over the coming years.

Though sales at The Villas at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa have ended, Disney Vacation Club still offers inventory at four other properties, including Aulani, Disney Vacation Club Villas, Ko Olina, Hawai'i, which began sales in July. Located on the island of O'ahu, phase one of Aulani is scheduled to open on August 29, 2011 and to offer families a large variety of water activities, excursions, restaurants, spa experiences and more. Disney Vacation Club also offers some East Coast inventory at Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort, Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas and Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort, all located at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

Disney Vacation Club revolutionized the timeshare industry when it debuted in October 1991 by offering a flexible, vacation point-based model versus the traditional fixed-week timeshare model. Nearly 20 years later, more than 450,000 individual members from approximately 100 countries and all 50 states have secured decades of quality Disney vacations at today's prices through a Disney Vacation Club membership. Inspired by guests who return to Disney resorts and theme parks year after year, Disney Vacation Club is one of the most successful and highly rated vacation-ownership programs in the timeshare industry. Members can enjoy a wide variety of quality vacation experiences rooted in the Disney tradition while offering the freedom to tailor vacations to each guest's interests and personal needs.

D23Winter2010a.jpg

BURBANK, Calif. - October 22, 2010 - Readers will have an exclusive all access sneak peek at the upcoming Disney feature film TRON: Legacy (in theatres December 17, 2010) when Disney twenty-three's Winter issue debuts November 1. Featuring one of the first comprehensive filmmaker interviews for TRON: Legacy, the Winter issue of Disney twenty-three magazine, produced by D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, is loaded with stories to delight Disney fans and the general public alike.

This issue of Disney twenty-three offers in-depth discussions with TRON: Legacy filmmakers and features two highly collectible covers. One cover is sent exclusively to D23 Members and the other is available for purchase at select Barnes & Noble and Borders bookstore locations, online at DisneyStore.com and throughout the Disneyland® and Walt Disney World® Resorts.

Director Joseph Kosinski and Producer Sean Bailey offer commentary on everything from behind-the-scenes moments and the personal memories that inspired participation in this cult-classic-sequel to the technical details that breathed life into the project. Writer Steven Lisberger even addresses the nearly thirty year gap between this film and the original release, saying: "The reason it took the 25 to 28 years is because we needed the ten-year-olds to grow up and be powerful enough to make this movie so that they could take their ten-year-old sons to see it."

TRON: Legacy co-stars are also interviewed in the nine-page spread. Bruce Boxleitner reprises his role from the original 1982 film, admitting that he is "the biggest TRON fan there is," while newcomer Garrett Hedlund discusses his take on his role as the character that inherits the TRON legacy.

Disney twenty-three also looks back at classic Disney with two very special pieces. The first displays the Holiday Season through the eyes of Walt and his family. A perfect fit for the Winter issue, the piece gives fans the privilege of an intimate look at Walt's home life. ‘Topping Out’ a Milestone in Cars Land Development And Disney California Adventure Expansion

ANAHEIM, Calif. (October 29, 2010) - The Topping Out Ceremony at Cars Land today celebrates the achievement of the construction team that is bringing the new land to life. It also marks a milestone in the overall expansion of Disney California Adventure park.

topping1a.jpg

Topping Out is a long-standing tradition among construction workers and engineers. It customarily takes place when the highest piece of steel is installed on the frame of building. The final beam is painted white and signed by the ironworkers, steel design engineer and construction management. It's said that the tradition dates back to an ancient Viking custom in which, upon completion of a construction, they would hoist an evergreen to the top in celebration. The evergreen, which is still part of the tradition, is said to signify growth and bring good luck. Today's ceremony takes place in "Ornament Valley," under development in Cars Land.

Opening to Disney California Adventure guests in 2012 and inspired by the Disney-Pixar blockbuster "Cars," the 12-acre Cars Land will invite guests to "take the off-ramp" and literally step into the movie's Radiator Springs setting. It will feature three new attractions, including the E-ticket thrill ride Radiator Springs Racers - taking guests zooming through the Cars Land landscape. Other Cars Land attractions will include Luigi's Flying Tires (striking a chord with anyone who remembers the Flying Saucers in Tomorrowland) and Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, a swinging square dance featuring baby tractors pulling Mater's junkyard trailers.

The expansion of Disney California Adventure park is creating even more fun and adventure for families planning multi-day visits to Disneyland Resort. Additional Disney California Adventure milestones in 2010-2011 include the after-dark spectacular "World of Color," which opened this summer and recently surpassed 1 million guests. An encore inspired by the upcoming Walt Disney Pictures "TRON: Legacy," debuting in theaters Dec. 17, will join the "World of Color" show beginning Sunday evening, Oct. 31. The premiere of a new attraction, The Little Mermaid - Ariel's Undersea Adventure, is set for 2011, and that voyage through the Little Mermaid's underwater world, will open in a refreshed Paradise Pier area, with new and enhanced shops and food locations, plus Goofy's Sky School, a wacky variation on the classic boardwalk "wild mouse" attraction.

Some interesting facts about Cars Land and the Cadillac Mountain Range under construction:

  • From both a creative and a structural standpoint, the Cadillac Range is one-of-a-kind, built to an unusual level of complexity with very few 90-degree angles.
  • Walt Disney Imagineers devoted more than 28,000 hours to designing the structural steel system for the rockwork and Radiator Springs Racers show building.
  • Because of the unique shape of the Cadillac Range, this Topping Out will not be the last piece of steel to go up, but it is the highest and most prominent. It will be part of the Pinnacle of the Cadillac Range, representing a 1959 Cadillac, whose tail fin was also known as the Pinnacle.
  • Cars Land construction began in July 2009. Steel installation started in March 2010.
  • At 280,000 square feet, the Cadillac Range is the largest rockwork job in any domestic Disney theme park - larger that the Matterhorn, Splash Mountain or, in Florida, Expedition Everest.
  • More than 4,000 tons of steel will be erected by the time the rockwork and Radiator Springs Racers are completed.
  • In addition to the attractions, Cars Land will be home to food and merchandise locations inspired by the Radiator Springs landmarks in the movie: Flo's V8 Café, Radiator Springs Curios, Cozy Cone Motel, etc.

Disney Dream "Floats Out" in Germany

dreamfloatsout.jpg

PAPENBURG, GERMANY, (Oct. 30, 2010) - After 20 months of construction, the Disney Dream cruise ship floated out of the enclosed building dock at the Meyer Werft shipyard today, completing a major construction milestone. The ship was greeted by thousands of visitors lining the shore to see the newest Disney Cruise Line ship, which features the first water coaster at sea and other cruise industry firsts designed to build upon Disney's commitment to delivering unparalleled family cruises.

The "Float Out" is a special maritime event that celebrates the ship's final stages of construction, where exteriors become complete and final touches are assigned to interiors. In true Disney-style, the celebration was punctuated with a fireworks display and the appearance of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. The Disney Dream is scheduled to sail its maiden voyage on January 26, 2011, from Port Canaveral, Fla.

dreamfloatsout3.jpg

dreamfloatsout2.jpg

"Today marks a monumental milestone and begins the first of the finishing touches for the Disney Dream as we prepare to welcome guests aboard our newest ship," said Karl Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line. "Our guests are counting down to the maiden voyage, and in just 88 days, they will get to experience all that the Disney Dream has to offer."

The Disney Dream is the first of two new ships being built by the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The Disney Fantasy is also currently in production and is scheduled to set sail on its maiden voyage on April 7, 2012.

"Today is a day of great pride for all of us at the Meyer Werft shipyard," said Bernard Meyer, managing partner of Meyer Werft. "To finally see the largest ship this yard has ever built floated out and nearly complete is an inspiration within itself, and that coupled with the pixie dust Disney is known for, made this a truly magical moment for all involved."

The Disney Dream will remain alongside Meyer Werft's outfitting pier in the shipyard harbor for about two weeks, while testing is completed on the ship's stabilizers, rudders and other functional features, and work on the ship's interior areas continues. The ship is scheduled to leave the Meyer Werft shipyard and be conveyed down the River Ems, the second weekend in November, where its destination is the North Sea at the port of Eemshaven, The Netherlands.

Disney Dream Innovations
Known for establishing the family cruise market when the Disney Magic debuted in 1998, Disney Cruise Line continues to build upon this success with a focus on the legacy and heritage of The Walt Disney Company's most known assets - master storytelling, world-class entertainment and legendary guest service. In addition to all of the features Disney Cruise Line is known for, the Disney Dream will have several new notable innovations for guests to enjoy.

• AquaDuck, a first-of-its-kind water coaster, is an exhilarating, high-speed thrill ride that combines all the ups and downs of a roller coaster with all the twists and turns of a water slide.
• Magical Portholes offer a "virtual window" to the world for inside staterooms, with a real-time view outside the ship where high-definition cameras feed live video to each stateroom.
• Enchanted Art immerses guests in Disney storytelling and looks like other hanging art pieces around the ship, but is actually a framed LCD screen with technology that recognizes a guest is present.
• Remy, an exquisite top-deck restaurant, only for adults, with incredible ocean views and French-inspired, gourmet cuisine by two award-winning chefs.

New Itineraries

With the addition of two new ships, Disney Cruise Line is able to more formally expand its itineraries to new destinations, including Alaska, while continuing to offer cruises to some of the line's most popular itineraries.

The Disney Dream will sail three-, four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Fla., while sister ship Disney Fantasy, is set to sail seven-night alternating eastern and western Caribbean itineraries, also from Port Canaveral, beginning in 2012. The Disney Magic will continue sailing seven-night eastern and western Caribbean cruises, before returning to the Mediterranean for another summer of cruising in this region in 2011. The Disney Wonder will begin 2011 by repositioning to the West Coast of the U.S., sailing seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises from the Port of Los Angeles, while spending the summer sailing first-ever Alaskan itineraries from Vancouver.
