On 5/22/09 my wife and I (along with six others) had lunch with Imagineer David Shirley. And by saying the experience was great would be an understatment. David was very nice and answered every question he could. He had to use the company line on certain questions only twice. He even picked our brains on certain things.
He gave us great insight on different areas. For example, telling us Everest has no elevators in it, but it has 17 stories to climb and he used to have to do it a lot. That Disney stores a lot of things (like a car from Mr. Toad's wild ride in his area). BTW he said Mr. Toads won't be coming back. He helped finish up Toy Story and refinshed the Haunted Mansion. He also explained that Disney is always watching to fix little things (like wait times in lines) not just the big things (different rides). He even said Disney watches different internet sites and blogs to see what guests are saying.
He even let us in on a couple of phrases the imagineers use. The lunch lasted just over 2 hours and could have gone longer, but he had a meeting. I would love to do this lunch everytime I came to Disney.

We have done Dining with an Imagineer twice at the Brown Derby. There is no better food anywhere however, to me that was not even a factor. The only bad thing about the venture for us was that the first Imagineer we had lunch with was Theron Skis. No offense to any of the other Imagineers (because I love hearing different aspects and different projects)but they pale in comparison to Theron. Theron was in charge of the Tower of Terror. He told how he rode it one night for 12 straight hours trying to get the sequencing right. He has worked at all the parks and worked his way up from the bottom. He could be a great motivational speaker. My 14 year old son joined me for this lunch and he was really touched by Theron. Both Imagineers really talked to the guests and ask them questions. It was a great experience that we will never forget.

Friday Feb.7, 2009 we had lunch at The Brown Derby with an imagineer, Jason. When we checked in we were greeted buy a senior waitstaff and after our group of 8 was assembled, we were given a tour and then escorted to The Bamboo room for our private dining. Jason, who has been an imagineer for over 10 years, was our host for the 3 hour lunch. He was a charming, enthusiastic and witty young man. He shared his experiences working at Disney and told us about the many projects he worked on at all the parks. Although he could not share any "trade" secrets, he answered all our questions. Like me, the other guests were "Disney fanatics" so we had an enjoyable lunch. The 3 hours flew by. The food portion of the lunch was very good. I chose the mushroom soup, cobb salad, grouper with citrus vegetables and grapefruit cake. I left the lunch completely stuffed. There were some very nice souveniers given out at the end of lunch. I certainly felt that the lunch was well worth the price and I would do it again without a second thought.
