Disney Pic of the Week: Yesterland Disney's Animal Kingdom

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

When it comes to Disney's Animal Kingdom, there is only one Yesterland photo that comes to mind. While Finding Nemo - The Musical is an excellent and colorful stage show. I still miss Tarzan Rocks!. Its mix of part rock and part stunt show was high energy and very entertaining. Below is a photo taken back in 2000 when Tarzan swung over the audience at the end of the show.

Hope you have enjoyed this look back at all the parks the past four weeks.

Editing a Dinosaur in Disney's Animal Kingdom

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

You walk up to the Dinosaur attraction in Disney's Animal Kingdom with your camera and carefully compose a photo by getting in close to the statue of Aladar. You move around until Aladar is looking into the frame adding interest. It is a bright, sunny day but your eyes see all the details and colors. You press the shutter to record the image. It looks good on the camera's LCD and you move on to catch up with your party entering the attraction.

Upon opening up the photo on your computer, you are disappointed in how it looks (see below). This is when you put your favorite photo editor to work. Mine is Apple Aperture but most editors can improve on a digital image.

Statue of Aladar outside Dinosaur ride in Disney's Animal Kingdom, Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida
Unedited photo of the statue of Aladar outside Dinosaur ride.
Nikon D7100/24-120VR, 1/320s, f/4.5, ISO 100, EV +0.3, 82mm (123mm DX) Focal Length.

For me, I set about opening up the shadows and pulling in the highlights using the sliders of the same name. I then added general edits over the entire image for Definition (Clarity), Vibrance and a touch of Saturation. This gave me a much better photo but Aladar was still a bit dark and washed out.

If your editor allows the use of Brushes to "brush" in adjustments on selected areas, you should become familiar with how to use them. Here I dodged (lightened) the dark areas under the eye and around the muzzle. After, I brushed in saturation to pull out the colors in Aladar's eye and skin. Lastly, I brushed in a good dose of Definition to pull out the textures of the skin.

The result you can see below.

Quite a deference and a much better image than what I started with. It pays to take the time in learning how to improve your photos using an editor.

Disney Pic of the Week: Finding Nemo - The Musical

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

It was just last June when Finding Nemo - The Musical was featured as the Picture This! Disney Pic of the Week. It is such a fun show, we are going it again. That okay with you, Dude?

The animated movie has been re-imagined as a musical and performed daily inside the Theater in the Wild at DinoLand U.S.A as Finding Nemo: The Musical. Using puppets to portray the characters, it takes many performers to bring to life such characters as Crush the Sea Turtle (seen above) and Bruce the Great White Shark. The lighting and staging are first rate and the musical score and songs will have you humming the rest of your day at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

A simply awesome Disney Pic of the Week for Finding Nemo. Right, Dude?

Disney Pic of the Week: Closed Attractions

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Disneyland is something that will never be finished. It's something that I can keep developing. It will be a live, breathing thing that will need change. -- Walt Disney

Such is the premise on which Walt Disney World was also built upon. Change happens all the time in the parks. I know many people feel this is a bad thing. Other people wish they could bring closed attractions and shows back. If I had my way, I would wish for the Tarzan Rocks! stage show to be brought back to Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Alas, I usually never get my way.

This is a scanned image from a Tarzan Rocks! show I took back in 2000 a few years before I got into digital photography.

Come back on Thursday when Lisa shares her Disney Pic of the Week on Closed Attractions.

Photographic Innoventions: Disney Props

The definition of a prop is something used in creating or enhancing a desired effect. The entire Walt Disney World resort is full of props. Some conspicuous and some not. I'm going to show you an example of each from Disney's Animal Kingdom.

The first prop is found in Chester & Hester's Dino-Rama which is like a little scene people can get into. This was taken a few months before my youngest daughter (seen here as the driver) would be able to get her driving learners permit and my eldest daughter acting out how she feels about that. Makes for a great photo from that trip. This can be found near the tail of the large, cartoon-ish brontosaurus, which you can see, in the background.

Dino-Rama Prop.
Nikon Coolpix 995, 1/350s, f/7.5, 100 ISO, 0 EV

In the gorilla glass viewing area on the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail there are many displays of information showing the differences between a gorilla's anatomy and Man's. Here my daughters are comparing their hands to the hand prints of a 6 year old male gorilla. Again, this prop makes for a wonderful memory and photograph.

Comparing Hands.
Nikon Coolpix 995, 1/30s, f/3, 200 ISO, 0 EV

You can find props in all the parks, resorts and entertainment areas in Walt Disney World. Here's some more places you can look for on your next trip: the park bench with Roy Disney and Minnie Mouse near the flag pole on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom, stage crates near Min and Bill's Dockside Diner in the Disney-MGM Studios, parasols in the Yong Feng Shangdian Department Store in Epcot's China pavilion and a life size Buzz Lightyear outside of the World of Disney store in Downtown Disney's Marketplace. Do you have a favorite prop at Walt Disney World? I'd love to hear about them and I'll share them in a later Photo Blog entry. Just send in a Comment!
