Disney Pic of the Week: Pirates of the Caribbean

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

The classic Pirates of the Caribbean or POTC ride found in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom has been updated over the years. It was not originally planned for Walt Disney World but, after guests were surprised it was not one of the original attractions at the Magic Kingdom, Disney quickly put it into production. POTC opened in December of 1973.

Below the picture will be a trivia question for you to answer in the Comments each week.

Terry Harris:

They are called flat bottom boats, for the Pirates of the Caribbean Ride.

Scott replies: Yes they are but there is a name for them, too.

Mark Hardy:

According to 'Pirate of the Caribbean From the Magic Kingdom to The Movies' by Jason Surrell, they are based on 'bateaux' - small, flat bottomed river boats used in the southern and eastern U.S.

They moved away from the walk-through initial concept after the success of the boats used for 'Small World' at the '64-'65 Worlds Fair.

Scott replies: You are correct, Sir! As is your backstory.

cathy m:

Hi Scott,
This was a little difficult so all I could find was that they are flat bottomed boats.

Scott replies: Yes, there were was a French sounding name for them, too. See Mark's reply for the answer.
