Last Set of Photo Bombs from Readers

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

This topic started back in May when I wrote a blog about sneaking into photos for fun. Nowadays the hip cats (kats? katz? Top Cat?) call it photo bombing. I invited readers to send in their own photos containing surprise guests. If you missed them, you can view them through these magical links.

Farewell to Epcot's Red, White & Blue Spirit of America

Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/250s, f/16, ISO 200, EV +0.3, 32mm focal length.

Like many Walt Disney World fans, I was surprised at the announcement to replace Off Kilter, Mo'Rockin', World Showcase Players and the group I choose to highlight for the Disney Pic of the Week on Epcot Entertainers.

The Spirit of America Fife and Drum Corps has been a part of my Epcot experience since 1983. It will be hard to not see them perform their American patriotic music and introduce the Voices of Liberty before each American Adventure show. They were as much a part of the American Adventure as the show was to me.

Sleeping with the Lion King at Walt Disney World

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

I know I go on and on about photographing details while at Walt Disney World. Even the resorts are full of such details. Some are subtle. Some are not.

While staying in the Lion King area of Disney's Art of Animation resort, I walked under the scene you see below taken directly from the animated move, The Lion King, of a young Simba with his pals, Timon and Pumba. What is so nice about this is the background. Instead of rows of room windows, there is a fittingly painted background.

Remember to look up while staying at a Disney resort, too. If I had not, I would have missed this cute scene. You may also have noticed the use of leading lines in the composition.

It's the Diamond Horseshoe Saloon in the Magic Kingdom! I'm like a lot of you: I miss the old show and when this was open all the time.

Herb Miller, that was a great story! I can imagine your little sister being mad at the lady on stage flirting with your dad while your mom was laughing!

Everyone got this one right! A couple asked if I was throwing the Players a bone. I try to do 2 easy ones, 1 medium, and 1 diffiult each month. Or at least what I think are easy, medium, and difficult. :)

Sands Family was the first to send in the correct answer! Congratulations to Sands and to all our winners this week! Disney Pic of the Week: Main Street USA

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

When touring Walt Disney World with friends and family who have never been to the Magic Kingdom, I tell them how I do not feel like I am at Disney until I walk up Main Street USA. It is hard to describe but if feels timeless. Yes, things have changed over the years but the essense of what Walt Disney wanted to convey to his guests is still there. A place and a time which was less hectic as the world we live in and where he grew up in.

Another thing I share with them is to always look up to see the many windows dedicated to past and current Cast Members which made large contributions to the Disney company over the years. As well as notice the detail in the architecture and colors used for each store as they walk up the street. The Uptown Jewelers is a good example. There one can buy those beautiful Disney snow globes, photo frames, charms, pens, jewelry, watches and other finery.

Main Street U.S.A. Rooftops

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

I am forever looking for new angles from which to photograph places like Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom that have been photographed millions of times before my arrival. If only I could gain access to upper levels, both inside and outside. How great it would be to sit in the camp and watch Jungle Cruise skippers and their surprised adventurers sail by me or stand in the pit (concert reference) at Hall of Presidents. I can only imagine how cool my shots would be.

Until then, I'll have to settle for the balcony of the Main Street Train Station.

Disney Pic of the Week - Jungle Cruise

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

I love the Jungle Cruise at Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World and I looooove the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland. Why the difference in my level of affection? In my personal and vast experience, west coast skippers are funnier for the entire ride whereas east coast skippers either excel or fail inside the cave. And no, there's no cave at Disneyland's Jungle Cruise. Both parks house the attraction in Adventureland

You say you've never sailed Jungle Cruise? If you like boats, you should go. If you like animatronics, you should go. If you like water, you should go. If you thrive on dry humor, get your tuchas down to the dock and I'll meet you there.

What Do You Do at Walt Disney World? Results

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

The winner of last week's caption contest is Kay Moss with her submission, Let it go, let it go.......(humming). Kay has won a Minnie Mouse pin. Congratulations!

Now, onto the blog.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few months ago I set up an online survey to gain access to your Disney gift cards but no one had a balance. Since that plan backfired, I'll share with you the actual survey results. Keep reading and you'll see why I asked.

The top 100 answers are...

Question 1. What's your typical admission ticket?

Annual Pass: 40
Single Park Per Day: 13
Park Hopper: 47

Question 2. How many hours do you typically spend in a park each day?

Two to Four Hours: 2
Four to Six Hours: 10
Six to Eight Hours: 32
Eight to Ten Hours: 32
Ten to Twelve Hours: 24

Question 3. How many stage shows do you watch per day?

None: 17
One: 52
Two: 29
Three: 1
Four: 1

Question 4. How many attractions do you ride in a typical day?

Three or Fewer: 6
Four to Six: 21
Seven to Nine: 40
Ten to Twelve: 19
Thirteen or More: 14

Question 5. Do you stop and watch the parade?

Yes: 65
No: 34

Question 6. Do you watch street-style performances such as World Showcase Players, Jammitors, and Dapper Dans?

Yes: 47
No: 1
Sometimes: 51

Question 7. How many street-style performances do you watch per day, typically?

None: 6
One or Two: 87
Three or Four: 7
Five or More: 0

Question 8. How much time do you spend each day, eating meals in the park?

One Hour: 31
Two Hours: 59
Three Hours or More: 10

When I take the most common answers and apply dollars and cents, you get a real good look at how much you're paying to visit The Most Magical Place on Earth. Let's say you're spending 4 days skipping from park-to-park.

A 4-Day Hopper currently costs $377.01 for ages 10 and up.. That's $94.25 per day.

You spend a total of 8 hours inside the park(s). You're paying $11.78 per hour. However, 2 of those hours are used eating meals. Now you've got 6 hours to play, which changes your finances to $15.71 per hour.

In a typical day, you watch 1 stage show, ride 7-9 rides, so we'll gauge it at 8 rides per day. You watch the fireworks, the parade, and 2 street-style performances. Let's add those up and you get 13. You're doing 2.2 attractions/shows per hour. That comes out to $7.14 per attraction/show/parade.

Not too bad unless you consider that you spent 20 minutes waiting to ride Peter Pan's Flight, a 2 minute and 45 second journey and waited 10 minutes for Mickey's PhilharMagic, a 12 minute show. Where did the other 15 minutes go? A stop at the restroom and a quick call to check in with your parents adds up. Don't multitask and perform both at the same time. Aaawkaaaard.

How do you get more bang for your Disney Dollar? Well, if you can stay in the park longer, you'll ride more rides, hopefully. Packing lunch will trim off time spent in line ordering and waiting for food. Conquer one land at a time instead of cross-crossing the park and wearing out your tootsies.

If you remove the Hopper option from your 4-day ticket, you'll pay less per attraction. Let's re-calculate so I can show my brother I solved a math problem...sort of.

A 4-day ticket currently costs $313.11 for ages 10 and up.. That's $78.28 per day.

You spend a total of 8 hours inside the park(s). You're paying $9.78 per hour. However, 2 of those hours are used eating meals. Now you've got 6 hours to play, which changes your finances to $13.05 per hour.

In a typical day, you watch 1 stage show, ride 7-9 rides, so we'll gauge it at 8 rides per day. You watch the fireworks, the parade, and 2 street-style performances. Let's add those up and you get 13. You're doing 2.2 attractions/shows per hour. That comes out to $5.93 per attraction/show/parade.

A total savings of $63.90 or $15.97 per day or $2.66 per hour or $1.21 per attraction. When Walt Disney World opened in 1971, a one-day ticket to the Magic Kingdom cost $3.50. You can't even get on a single ride for that price now. That's a 28.2% price increase.

For comparison, a loaf of bread in 1971 was 25¢. A 28.2% increase would mean bread is now $7.05, and thankfully it's not. The average income in 1971 was $6,497.08. A 28.2% increase would pay out at $183,217.66 in 2014. Yeah, I don't make that much money.

Jungle Cruise Skipper at the Magic Kingdom

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Skipper of a Jungle Cruise boat waves goodbye to a departing crew.
Nikon D700/Sigma 15mm Fisheye, 1/200s, f/7.1, ISO 200, EV -0.3.

UPDATE: I seemed to have caused a stir with this post title. First, I only write about and share photography from Disney themeparks in this space. I do not report news from the Disney Company. Second, the Jungle Cruise Skippers are NOT going away. The title comes from my boat waving goodbye to the skipper you see in the photo. I think people saw the title and JUMPED to conclusions. So, I have changed the title which was, "Goodbye Jungle Cruise Skipper at the Magic Kingdom".

Skippers of the Jungle Cruise in either the Magic Kingdom or Disneyland have one wry sense of humor. They have to pilot all of us guests around and around the great rivers of the world and be funny each and every time. My Mickey Mouse Ears hat off to them all.

Now, let's everyone turn around and wave good-bye to those people on the dock we've left behind. (In low voice) Come on folks... pretend like you're having a good time. - Jungle Cruise Skipper

Remember, photos of t-shirts, signs, beach towels and other design items make excellent title images for vacation slide shows and scrap books. Oh, and for blogs, too!

We're at the Sommerfest entrance of Epcot's German Pavilion! But now I keep thinking of the Biergarten's buffet; haven't been there in awhile. And by the way:

Dori's Friend Vicki: did you get me a cream puff? I could use a cream puff. Well, after my diet. Sigh...

Thanks for that, Jeff Blank. Now I have the Hogan's Heroes theme in my head.

Sarah And Chris, I completely forgot about that Full House episode! I definitely think you should be able to hold out your hand and have birds land, like you were Disney royalty!

Disney Pic of the Week: The Fab Five

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

If you hang around any Disney fan, you will eventually hear the term: The Fab Five. No, a Fifth Beatle was not discovered. The Fab Five refers to the lovable Walt Disney created characters: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and Pluto. You usually only see them all together during live stage shows in the parks. However, at Chef Mickey's in the Contemporary Resort, each of the Fab Five will come visit you at your table. A little photo processing magic and you can put them all together.

Neon Night Photography

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Over the years, one of the most common questions asked of Scott, Barrie (you remember her), and me, is about night photography. Our reply always includes the need for a tripod or steady flat surface so that your camera is still. Why does it need to remain motionless? Because is in order for the digital sensor or film to record/absorb light in dark situations, the shutter must stay open longer than if it were daylight. If a camera moves during a long exposure, the shot will be soft or blurred. Even if you think you're holding still, so long as you're breathing, you're moving.

I ventured out late one night while vacationing in Miami and hit Ocean Drive on South Beach with my tripod and Canon EOS 30D and EF 17-40mm f4L USM. The neon highlighted hotels and restaurants are alluring and with fewer people taking up sidewalk space than earlier, I planted myself in several spots and got to work.

With my ISO set at 100 and aperture at f8, I let the camera's light meter select the shutter speed. After a few shots, I changed composition little by little, as you'll see.

lkb-TripodSouthBeach1.jpg
.4 seconds

lkb-TripodSouthBeach2.jpg
.8 seconds

lkb-TripodSouthBeach3.jpg
.5 seconds, f10

I changed to a slightly faster shutter speed on this last frame so the color would be more saturated and truer to what I saw with my very own eyes.

Looking for neon at Walt Disney World? Try Disney's Hollywood Studios for some night time shooting. They appear to have more of it than the other parks. Headed west? Disney's California Adventure is the place to capture neon glow.

Donald Duck's a Party Animal

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! is a parade at Magic Kingdom filled with bright bold colors and a festive atmosphere. Donal Duck, the fine feathered member of the Fab Five donned his party hat and discoed to his heart's content.

Unfamiliar with the Fab Five? The unofficial group is comprised of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Goofy, and Donald Duck. They don't have a garage band but they entertain in a multitude of other ways.

Flag Wavers of Sansepolcro Italy in Epcot

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

One never knows when a new photographic opportunity will present itself. At Walt Disney World, it could happen while talking with friends in one of Epcot's countries. This happened to me last week while in Italy. A fanfare of drums and trumpets was heard before a parade of colorful men came into the pavilion with large flags. I quickly surmised this was the new show Disney said was coming.

The four flag bearers and four musicians paraded up the stairs to the circular center stage of the pavilion. People were drawn around the stage and I quickly went to the stairs and sat down in front. The stage is elevated and getting low did a couple of things for me: it cleaned up the background as my field of view was over most spectators heads and gave a more dramatic angle to the entertainers.

Nikon D700/24-120VR, 1/320s, f/10, ISO 200, EV 0, 24mm Focal Length.

Being an entirely new show, I did not know what to expect. I will say the costuming was excellent. The colors of the flags did not clash with the Italy pavilion colors in anyway. Making the performers and the flags stand out.

Nikon D700/24-120VR, 1/320s, f/10, ISO 200, EV 0, 24mm Focal Length.

Again, not knowing what to expect, I found myself clicking at almost every move the performers made. This resulted in a lot of images I discarded later.

I used a fast shutter speed to freeze the action. The day was bright enough to still have a good Depth of Field aperture in the f/9 to f/10 range. Next time, I would like to try slower shutter speeds when the performers are standing still while waving the flags.

What this show does do, is a lot of repetition. Which means if you miss a move, a toss or a jump the first couple of times, be patient, as they will repeat it again in a few seconds. The move you see above was about the fourth or fifth jump in the routine.

Since I photographed this show, I found out the group is called Flag Wavers of Sansepolcro. If you click on the link, you will see more of my photos from the show and a video of an early performance. I suspect the show will evolve over the next few weeks but the video will give you a good idea of what to expect.

Disney Pic of the Week - AllEars in the Parks

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

As part of the AllEars.Net crew/staff/team/ensemble, I've been able to participate in a few meet and greets on land on both coasts and even at sea. It's been fun meeting readers in person and hearing encouraging feedback. My choice of themes for my last Disney Pic of the Week is AllEars in the Parks. In my regular blog on Wednesday, I'll explain why this is my last Disney Pic of the Week entry and more.

Cathy Bock runs the Rate & Review portion of the website. Laura Gilbreath handles 99% of everything regarding Disneyland. These two ladies work hard to keep their respective sections of AllEars.Net running smoothly.

Catch You Later

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

My inner monologue has been over-flowing with stereotypical Jewish what ifs, guilt, second guesses, and the desire for a nice Kosher deli at Disneyland, all in Jackie Mason's voice. Why? What's all the fuss? As a photo blogger I need a large number of pictures to use in my weekly writing, and to get those photos requires traveling from MA to FL or to CA at least once a year.

I took this year off from Walt Disney World and in place was able to visit Miami,FL, Washington, DC, and Niagara Falls, Ontario. There's a great big world out there that I'd like to see. That's not to say I no longer enjoy all that Walt Disney World or Disneyland have to offer but I need to shift the balance of where I spend my time. So, as the Walt Disney Company continues raising prices my visits will become fewer.

What does that mean? It means I've decided to retire from writing my weekly blog, as seen here, as well as the Disney Pic of the Week. Try to hold back the tears, I'm not leaving you completely. From time to time when I have something to pipe up about regarding pretty much anything Disney, you'll find fresh work from me. Right now I'm not sure if they'll land in the Guest Blog, the Team Blog, in the newsletter or somewhere else on the website. You can always re-read or seek out older Light Meter blogs on AllEars.Net.

I do have some future travel plans that include a visit to Disney's Aulani in Oahu and to Disneyland. With any luck I'll conjure up something worth posting.

Thank you for all of the feedback, it's nice to know someone took not only the time to read my words but to also respond to them.

I'd like to share with you some photos I've taken this year and last year and hope they'll inspire you to take photos of people, places, and things.

I'll catch you later.

Deb Wills and Don Ducky Wiliaims at Epcot

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

With this being All Ears in the Parks for the Disney Pic of the Week, I felt it appropiate to feature All Ears Founder and all around great gal, Deb Wills. Back in 2011, All Ears celebrated 15 years of sharing information about Walt Disney World. One of the anniversary events was held in the Odyssey Pavilion at Epcot. Disney animator Don "Ducky" Williams gave an hour long talk about how he became a character artist for the Walt Disney Company. His story was full of funny anecdotes, interesting insights and, finally, triumph as he was hired (or more like never asked to leave). The whole time he drew Disney character after Disney character. Afterward, Deb Wills raffled off each of the 22 different characters Don had drawn that morning. Each one having been signed by him.

Before the event started, I took the photo you see above of Deb getting her picture taken with Ducky and thought it was a great one to share for this week's topic.

Scarecrows of Town Square

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Today being Halloween, I thought I would share with you a different angle on the Scarecrows of Town Square.

Most people photograph the scarecrows you see upon entering the Magic Kingdom standing up. When you do it that way, you have to be very careful of what is happening in behind the scarecrows. People will be walking there, Photopass photographers have a Halloween setup which is very busy and cast members could be selling balloons on Main Street USA to name a few background distractions.

To help eliminate such "noise" in my scarecrow photos below, I got down low (yes, folks, that means bending those knees). There are still people in some of the photos below but they are at the bottom of the frame and blended into the corn stalks Disney used this year at the base of each of the scarecrows.

Dressed up Scarecrow in Town Square.
Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/320s, f/11, ISO 200, EV 0, 30mm focal length.

Another tricky background object is the flag pole. As you can see here, I did not do a very good job of getting the flag pole out of the frame. I should have moved to my right a little more.

Baker Scarecrow on Town Square in the Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida.
Baker Scarecrow pushing sugar around Town Square.
Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/320s, f/11, ISO 200, EV 0, 34mm focal length.

On this photo of the Scarecrow Mayor I did a better job.

Scarecrow Mayor looking for votes around Town Square.
Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/320s, f/14, ISO 200, EV 0, 30mm focal length.

It was very hard to not get any of the trees in the frames for a couple of the scarecrows so I tried to find a pleasing composition with them in it.

Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/320s, f/11, ISO 200, EV 0, 38mm focal length.

Working to get clean or less distracting backgrounds in your photos is well worth the effort. Keep it in mind the next time you are out photographing.

BLOG NOTE: As you may have read this week, Lisa will no longer be writing her Picture This! blog or contributing to the Disney Pic of the Week. For the time being, it is just Erin and myself. Erin will be continuing the popular Where in the World contests as I will post a Disney Pic of the Week every Tuesday and this blog on Friday.

Next year I plan on visiting Walt Disney World a couple of times. Watch for Photowalk announcements about a month before each visit. If you have any questions, would like me to cover a particular photography subject or have a Pic of the Week suggestion, drop me a comment.
