Disney Pic of the Week - Special Events

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

What do Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, Star Wars Weekends, and Epcot International Food and Wine Festival have in common? They're all special events that draw in even bigger crowds to The Most Magical Place on Earth. Also, two of of three have insanely long names. Disney Parks offer limited time and seasonal experiences to enhance your visit.

Know before you go! Check AllEars.Net's schedule of events so you plan accordingly. We'll tell you what's happening so you can make informed decisions and bring me back anything with Minnie Mouse dressed as Princess Leia. Why? Obviously, because I deserve it but also because my Hebrew name is Leia and I'm a princess in training.

My favorite freebies are the Flower Power shows at Epcot during the Flower and Garden Festival. Grab a seat at the outdoor theater in front of the America pavilion and enjoy well-known bands and singers. You can even see the same performers multiple times in the same day. All concerts are included with the price of admission into Epcot.

Micky Dolenz of The Monkees was called to brighten up fans after the passing of his close friend and fellow band mate, Davy Jones. Micky has since been invited back and will probably make this an annual event.

Scott will share his photo with you on Thursday. Well, isn't that special?!

Phineas and Ferb Fan

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

New characters emerge from Disney and I try to keep up by at least knowing who they are and where they come from. I was clueless about Phineas and Ferb. Far as I could figure out, they met visitors at Disney's Hollywood Studios on the set of a radio station and a hat-wearing platypus peered through the wooden fence. At Disney's California Adventure they had a dance party.

Platypus merchandise was everywhere. To me, it was cute but I couldn't understand the commotion. I knew nothing, not where the characters originated, not their storyline, and not why a blue/green platypus wore a hat.

A few months ago, while home sick, I was flipping channels and landed on Disney Channel, a station I don't usually watch. Elizabeth! It's the big one. Yeah, I get it. Phineas and Ferb came on and I decided to watch an episode. I was hooked. Like most animated shows, it contains humor that goes over the kids' heads because it's meant for adults.

phineasferb.jpg

I laugh every time they play the theme song for Dr. Doofenshmirtz, Inc. A villain with his own company and jingle? Hilarious. Let's not forget the absurd relationship between Perry the Platypus, a secret spy, and the moderately bad ideas from Doofenshmirtz. A villain who's sad when he nemesis doesn't stop by every day to foil his plans; someone needs a hug.

Now that I understand these kids, I am confused as to why they're set up at Disney's Hollywood Studios. They should be at Epcot's Innoventions East or West teaching kids how to draw blueprints or showing off their inventions. Disney's missing out on nudging that free-thinking ability kids have.

Since my initial viewing, I've watched more shows, caught the Star Wars send-off, and rented a movie and season's worth of episodes. I am now officially a fan of Phineas and Ferb. If you're not, watch an episode or two. I think you'll be glad you did.

For a few years now the Stars of the Saga show at the Premier Theater in Disney's Hollywood Studios has opened with a fun group of Imperial Stormtroopers who often break out in song during their performance. This year it was Let It Go from the Disney animated mega-hit Frozen. Besides, the cold never bothered them on Hoth.

A delightful photo for Disney Pic of the Week on Special Events.

Epcot Night Portrait

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Ever wonder how the Disney PhotoPass Cast Members get those night photos of people in front of Walt Disney World icons? It is not very hard IF you use the right equipment. You will need a flash, a tripod or an Image Stablized Lens and patient subjects.

For the night portrait below, I did not have my tripod with me so I hand held the camera at 1/15th of a second and dragged the shutter to build up the light of Spaceship Earth and Innovention Fountains behind the couple. I instructed them to stay very still until the flash went off.

Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/15s, f/8, ISO 6400, EV 0, 48mm focal length.

By using a tripod, I could have lowered the ISO but the shutter speed would have been longer. Making it harder for the subjects to stay still this late at night. If you do this around sunset, you will get even better results at faster shutter speeds.

Where in the World #348

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

Carla C, Jennifer Harmon, and Heather Pedulla are at Walt Disney World! Tell Mickey we said hi! If you bump into each other, don't talk bad about me.

Hi, Patty McCaffrey! When I said, "Anyone who wants to send my husband messages of support and sympathy can reach him through here.", I meant he has to put up with me while I'm on a diet. LOL

Kerri Coggins, my diet sister! I never diet in Disney either. Just face it when I get home. :)

Disney Pic of the Week: Paradise Pier

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Paradise Pier in Disney's California Adventure was a most pleasant surprise. I knew California Screamin' was going to be a blast but the overall feel of the place did remind me of the East Coast boardwalks with fun games, popular rides with a Disney twist and good food. Like those boardwalks, when night falls a little extra magic fills the air.

Signs that You're in a Disney Park

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Everything is matchy-matchy, themed, and ensembleized (new word) at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World. It's like each land is wearing Garanimals (way before my time). But that's what we love, that extreme attention to detail that assists in transporting us to another place where lunch isn't timed and the only dress code is wear clothes.

Signs are designed to co-ordinate with architecture, attractions, or just to stand out. They give us instructions, offer pricing for food, and most importantly, tell us where we are.

Want to photograph something that could change or disappear over time? Take pictures of signs.

Bullseye Stallion Stampede

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

After Disney's California Adventure made over Paradise Pier, boardwalk games became more exciting with Disney themes. By feverishly rolling balls in a skeeball-style game, players earn points depending on which hole the ball falls through. The more points, the further your horsey goes and whoever reaches the finish line first wins.

Classic Cinderella Castle in HDR

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

It was about a half hour before sunset and the top spires of Cinderella Castle was being illuminated with golden sunshine. Below, the castle and moat was in shade. Such lighting can be tough for a camera to capture in a single exposure. In post, you can open up the shadows some.

On the other hand, a set of photos for High Dynamic Range processing using today's software like Photomatix, can produce excellent results.

Disney Pic of the Week - Spaceship Earth's Exterior

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

How many photos do you have of Spaceship Earth's exterior? A lot, right? The geodesic sphere, lovingly referred to as the giant ball by newbies, is an intriguing piece of architecture. As the central focal point of Epcot, it's easily recognizable and as such can be found on t-shirts, pins, and mugs. As a matter of fact, there's even a Spaceship Earth play set!

Whether you take your photo from the turnstiles, underneath, or World Showcase, there's no bad angle. I took this action shot from the monorail.

Circling Spaceship Earth

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

In keeping with our Disney Pic of the Week theme, Spaceship Earth, I'm continuing the subject with tips on photographing the sphere from a moving monorail.

First, board the monorail heading to Epcot at the Ticket and Transportation Center. If you board the monorail to Magic Kingdom, well...that's the wrong line, Charlie. Second, sit facing forward and on the right hand side beside the window. (I'm pretty sure it's the right side.) Next, get your camera ready for some action. You're in motion so you'll need a fast shutter speed and depending on the lighting, a higher than normal ISO. My recommendations are 1/500 and an ISO of 400 on sunny days. Gray skies? ISO 640 or even 800 and 1/250 or faster.

Put the camera lens right up to the window to cut down on reflections. It's not fool proof because light bends.

While Spaceship Earth itself looks the same from every angle, the lighting can change drastically. Check this out. As we neared my subject, I could tell I had a great chance of intentionally shooting with lens flare. I did it! But, I also got some extra stuff in my shot like window and lighting reflections as well as a mysterious person.

lkb-Monorail-LensFlare.jpg
Dagnamit.

As we rounded the track, I was in a position to get a different type of lighting with highlights and shadows in all the right places. My only problem? The rubber edge of the window.

lkb-SpaceshipEarth-Side2.jpg
So close. Wait, there's s simple fix, cropping.

lkb-Monorail-SpeacshipEarth-Side1.jpg
I even bumped up the contrast a little and gave even more depth to the image.

I have been riding Epcot's Spaceship Earth since 1983 and have heard every narrator for the attraction. By far, Walter Cronkite's version is my favorite. He was Uncle Walter to my generation who grew up watching his nightly newscasts on television.

Birds of Flights of Wonder at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

The Flights of Wonder show in Disney's Animal Kingdom features many species of birds found throughout the world. Many are shown flying around the stage and audience.

The best way to photograph this show is with a fast shutter speed. I set my camera to Shutter Priority mode with the shutter at 1/1000th of a second and changed Auto Focus (AF) to Continuous.

Welcome to the Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe in the Magic Kingdom! As quite a few people mentioned, the 1878 is part of Pecos Bill's history. In 1878, with the encouragement of his friends, Pecos Bill decided to open his own watering hole, a restaurant whose motto very much reflects its one-of-a-kind owner. "The tastiest eats and treats this side of the Rio Grande." This is from the plaque inside the restaurant. There's also items around the place donated from some of Bill's friends like the Lone Ranger and Davy Crockett. It was a popular hangout for lots of cowboys.

Disney Pic of the Week: Billboards of Hollywood Studios

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Walking around Disney's Hollywood Studios always gives me the feeling of being in a place that never was. You know what I mean? Hollywood back in the 1930's and 1940's was like a fantasy to most of America. A place not quite real. The billboards you see around the Studios help to tell the story of that time. A few of the billboards are based on the park's sponsors while others advertise locations in the area. Locations like Hollywoodland.

Lisa will be here on Thursday to share her Disney Pic of the Week on The Billboards of Hollywood Studios (sounds like an old monster movie title, doesn't it?).

Photo Sequence: Serveur Amusant

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

One of the things you can try the next time you set out to take photographs is to tell a story. An easy way to do that is to shoot sequential shots of some physical change or act. It can be anything like a bike ride or a baby trying a new food. If you're really enthusiastic, set up the tripod and record a lunar or solar eclipse.

Last year I set my sights on the entertainment at the France pavilion in Epcot. Serveur Amusant is an acrobatic performance showcasing precision, balance, and control. There's no need for words, so the photos will do the talking.

This Way to Fantasmic

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

lkb-Billboards-Fantasmic.jpg

Disney's Hollywood Studios (aka MGM Studios) has a large (get it?) assortment of billboards staggered throughout the park. I don't think that it's necessarily very Hollywood since signage on Sunset Blvd and Hollywood Blvd (in Hollywood) consists of moving imagery, flashing lights, and entire sides of buildings. Honestly, they're extremely distracting for drivers.

So, as you make your way around the park, look up and enjoy the billboards and be glad that you don't have to dust them.

Echo Lake Sunset in Disney's Hollywood Studios

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

As I was scouting locations for the Star Wars Weekend Fireworks, I checked out the view from across Echo Lake. It was late in the day and the Sun was just going down behind the palm trees to the right of Min & Bill's Dockside Diner. This created a large light discrepancy between the bright sky and the water. As I talked about with Cinderella Castle a couple of weeks ago, I decided to take a series of photos to capture the large range of light in the scene to combine later to create a High Dynamic Range (HDR) image.

The light range was even larger this time and I took a set of seven photos from -3EV to +3EV in 1 EV stop increments. I later merged those photos together using Photomatix Pro software.

Disney Pic of the Week - Epcot Entertainers

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Scott and I would like to dedicate our Disney Pic of the Week to the cast of talented actors, musicians, singers, comedians, and dancers who were recently let go from Epcot. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for always making us remember, smile, laugh, snort, clap, dance, and just plain rock out. We miss you already.
