Disney Pic of the Week - Peter Pan's Flight

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Quite possibly the most popular ride in all of Fantasyland, Peter Pan's Flight sets visitors off in a sailing ship that flies high above London and Neverland. Yes, you can fly. Relive scenes from Walt Disney's 1953 classic animated film. Why there's even a pirate mermaid lagoon. This dark ride is fun for the whole family.

Light and Shadows at Minnie Mouse's House

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

What can separate one photo from another is the quality of lighting. If you take a look at where lights falls and can recognize where the shadows are and how they affect the scene, you're already taking better photos. Natural light is beautiful. It feels different than trying to create perfect lighting because it's genuine and it is what it is. You can't tell the sun, Dude, can you move about 5 inches to your left? I mean, you can but people will look at you and quickly grab their children and run.

Let's look at an example of how lighting, even in post production can alter an image's effect. This first photo of Minnie Mouse's home in Disneyland is a great example of not only how shadows come into play but what the shadows are of that can impact an image.

AdjustingLightShadows-Original.jpg
It's a little flat, so I brightened things up a bit in PhotoShop, never loosing sight of how important those branches are.

AdjustingLightShadows-Brighter.jpg

Looking to take full advantage of tree branch shadows? Deepen the shadows, fiddle with the mid-tones and highlight the shadows.
AdjustingLightShadows-DarkerShadows.jpg

Any photo editing software program will allow you to alter contrast. If I were to darken shadows in a dark room, I'd run the light and make a circle with my hand to burn in a certain part of the image. To lighten an area, I'd wave my hand so the light doesn't hit the paper as long as it projects onto other areas. Anyone want to build me a darkroom?

All Aboard Peter Pan's Flight

While today's dSLR cameras can capture photos inside Peter Pan's Flight in the Magic Kingdom, back when I had a Nikon D70, photographing the loading area was about the best I could hope for.

I remember for years bypassing this attraction thinking it was like a carnival's funhouse ride. When my daughters where young and this was one of the few rides they could go on, I finally got to try it. Imagine my surprise at the wonderful imagery and smooth ride technology. A must-do for anyone.

The opening of the New Fantasyland expanision in the Fall of 2013 added new locations to photograph Wishes, the nightly fireworks show, from in the Magic Kingdom. A new favorite composition of Disney photographers is placing the Ariel statue near the entrance to The Little Mermaid -- Ariel's Undersea Adventure at the bottom of the frame as fireworks burst overhead. The statue is lighted and works very well.

For more ideas, search flickr to see all the interesting locations our fellow Disney fan photographers have found throughout the Magic Kingdom to photography Wishes from.

Where in the World #326

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

Jennifer R. and Kristi S: you worked in Tomorrowland?!
From Millan.Net

Josh Carney, have a magical trip! Thank you so much for offering to pick up something! I love Oswald, so anything with him would be great.

Christi Ison, thank you for your lovely note! Guess what? I had a typing class too! My high school insisted everyone take it because we'd need it one way or the other. They proved all the nay sayers wrong!

The entrance to Tomorrowland from the Magic Kingdom hub! Yes, this was easy but look at my pretty picture! I took this from the PeopleMover, Players! You can click on it for a larger size if you want.

Wow, Karen Schlumpf, Lynette Michalos, Timmy Saunders, Jim Thompson, and Cheryl Costello! You nailed it! Brian Mcwithey, thank you for the PeopleMover quote! I've been trying to get that "Calling Tom Morrow, calling Tom Morrow. Your party from Saturn has arrived. Please give them a ring." as clean as possible for my husband's ring tone. But I always get too much track noise. Sigh.

Thank you to everyone for their compliments on the photo. :)

Curtis Bille, you have a gift for Disney comedy, my friend! ;)

Deb Ragno, Team Hill says the technical name for this is "the entrance archway thingamagig". Maureen Handy says it's also known as "the deelymabobber thingamajig". So you can stop searching now. :)

Disney Pic of the Week: Club Cool

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Club Cool in Epcot's Future World is famous... or infamous, depending on your taste buds. Sponsored by Coca Cola, you can sample for free sodas or pops or soda pops (depending on where you live) from all over the world. Like foods, people's tastes in sodas from other countries can be very different. Just ask anyone who has tried Beverly from Italy during their tastings at Club Cool.

Tips for New Camera Owners

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

I'm going to quickly give you a rundown on everything you need to know. Ready?

1. Read the manual

2. Charge your lithium-ion battery. If the camera takes AA, get yourself rechargeables.

3. Keep your camera safe and protected in a padded or hard shell camera bag.

4. All digital point and shoots have some delay. Newer cameras have faster processors. One way to help speed things up is to use a faster memory card.

5. Cameras do not like liquids or sand.

6. Read the maunal. It's worth being repeated.

7. That built-in flash only goes 8-10 feet.

8. If you use any night mode, you'll need a tripod.

9. Cameras have a tendency to get drunk on New Year's Eve, fall down, and require a trip to the repair center. Don't let your camera drink.

10. Do not wipe the LCD screen with your clothes. Use a microfiber cloth.

Beverly Strikes Again at Epcot's Club Cool

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

I had to do it, it's the kind of friendship Yoli and I have. Plus, how many people are initiated on their first trip to Walt Disney World? She should have thanked me.

If you're unfamiliar with what just transpired, Coca-Cola offers free samples of some of their sodas from around the world. It's an international beverage extravaganza and most drinks taste fruity but there's one that shocks the taste buds and it's name is Beverly.

Nikon D700/Tokina 11-16mm, 10s, f/16, ISO 200, EV -1, 15mm focal length, tripod.

This is a fun and popular composition when photographing around Epcot's Spaceship Earth. Use a wide angle or fisheye lens under Spaceship Earth and place its bottom at the top of the frame. I really like the photos at night when Disney "paints" the reflective triangles with golden and purple colors.

I do not know about you, this photo makes me feel the weight of the geosphere above it. The next time you find yourself underneath Spaceship Earth, remember this fact: it weighs 15,520,000 Pounds (7,040,000 Kilograms) or 7,760 Tons.

Where in the World #327

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

Guess what? My husband surprised me with a birthday trip to Walt Disney World this June! He worked with John Ames at MEI Travel to set it up and then showed me the trip on My Disney Experience! Afterwards, he said, "I should have waited until the night before to tell you." I, of course, handled the announcement with grace and elegance.

Disney Pic of the Week - Muppet Vision 3D

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Muppet Vision 3D first appeared, and is still playing, at Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim. Outside the theatre entrance you'll find Beaker and The Great Gonzo up to their old tricks along with the flying pig ship from The Muppet Show's Pigs in Space skit.

A copy of the film can also be seen in Lake Buena Vista at Disney's Hollywood Studios where the theatre sits across from a Muppet water fountain, complete with Miss Piggy dressed as Lady Liberty.

No matter what coast you're on, Muppet Vision 3D is sure to please. I can't get enough of my favorite comedian, Fozzie Bear.

For those of us who remember The Muppet Show syndicated television show, watching the pre-show to MuppetVision 3-D in Disney's Hollywood Studios is like going back in time with one twist...each bank of televisions are connected into one scene. The Muppet zaniness which happens as guests wait to enter the theater is exactly like what I used to watch in my college dorm room back in the late 1970's.

A nostalgic trip down memory lane for my Disney Pic of the Week about MuppetVision 3-D.

Disney Pic of the Week: Tree Of Life

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Whether it is your first time visiting Disney's Animal Kingdom or your fiftyish, seeing the Tree Of Life as you come out onto the bridge to cross over to Discovery Island is an amazing experience. I like it as one of the few places in Walt Disney World where you can frame an attraction and wonder where on Earth it is.

Here are a few facts from the AllEars.net page about the Tree of Life:

  • Branches span 165 feet across
  • There are over 100,000 leaves on the tree
  • The trunk is 50 feet wide
  • 20 artists carved into the trunk, branches and roots over 320 animals
  • Thousands worked on the construction of the Tree of Life which took 18 months to build

Lisa will be here on Thursday to share her view of the Disney Pic of the Week on the Tree Of Life.

I see a lot people when they first walk up to the Tree of Life after crossing the bridge just take a photo or look at the tree for a bit then walk off to either side around Discovery Island. I suggest to many of my friends and family, to take the short trail down to the animal viewing area. Here you can see the animals and take pictures often with no one around with the tree making a nice background. You can see many of the Tree of Life's carvings from there, too.

Discovery Island is one of the places you can get good pictures of the beautiful and endangered West African Crowned Cranes.

When approaching the Lion area towards the end of the Kilimanjaro Safari be ready as you never know when you might get a glimpse of one of the felines.

After you get off your Kilimanjaro Safari jeep, be sure to follow the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail to see all the wonderful animals and birds. The highlight being the troops of Western lowland gorillas. Take your time as you walk along the trail as you are often followed.

Sadly, you can no longer visit with the Komodo Dragon on the Maharajah Jungle Trek as a few weeks after I took this photo, the dragon died. He was a magnificent animal who gave me many thrills over the years. {UPDATE: Paul (see comments) has informed me there is a new Komodo Dragon. I will get a photo of it on my next trip for sure.]

Where in the World #329

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

I'm watching WDW Resort TV from the 100 Years of Magic Celebration: It's the Zip A Dee Doo Dah Tip of the Day! Today's tip is:
Don't be like me and totally miss discussing Easter. LOL I hope you had a good one!

^Get it? :-)

Danielle Harsley And Agnes Ciotti are going to Disneyland for the first time! Stop at the window of Walt's apartment and at his bench for me! Ride the subs! And the posh train car! Sit in the rear bubble of the monorail as well as trying to get up front! And definitely go to the Wonderground Gallery!

Carol Gamill, you do need to go home! And I completely understood that you meant home to Disney! I raise a Grand Marnier Slush to you. :)

Congratulations to Sarah Thomas for signing up for her first Disney marathon! Good for you, Sarah! Wear your Disney medal proudly:

Gabriella, Terry And Matthieu: Bonjour! That's all the French I know, other than food like croissant. :) As I said to the Cast Member in the France Pavilion: "I apologize if I butcher your language when I pronounce what I want to order."

The Gunnels Family: I'm the youngest of seven kids, just like your family. :)

Now for Challenge #328:

Chris Kelly, you risk taker you! You're right: it's Chefs de France in Epcot's France Pavilion!

Also some of the fountain. :)

Yes, I know the restaurant's name is in the picture. I thought it was too hard without something in it!

Janet T Thorn, I would love to join you for lunch or dinner! Ashley Collins, come with us!
Mickey Eckert, I am a freak for crème brulee! I'll meet you at Les Halles Boulangerie and Patisserie.

Davida, I walked into a trash can when I was a kid! I was backing away from the Big Bad Wolf and went right into the can. My mother, of course, was very concerned --- after she was done laughing. I still haven't forgiven the Wolf. ;)

Disney Pic of the Week - All-Star Resorts

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Family-friendly, enjoyable for solo travelers, and kitschy fun for friends, the various All-Star Resorts at Walt Disney World are considered value resorts given they're priced lower than the rest of the on-property accommodations. Themed from top to bottom, inside and out with ginormous character icons, toys, athletic gear, musical instruments, and more, All-Star Resorts are a great place to take photos.

Take a day off between parks and visit a resort you've never been to or simply take the time to wader around the one where you are staying. Everything is there for your enjoyment, especially the gift shop.

My photo comes from All-Star Movies and the Toy Story themed buildings. As someone who spent years taking portraits of first thru eighth graders, this shot cracks me up. It looks like Woody's school photo, complete with Rembrandt lighting.

lkb-AllStars-MoviesWoody.jpg
Rembrandt lighting is when one half of a face is in shadow and there's an upside down triangle of light under the eye.

Hurry back for Scott's take on things this Thursday.
