Halloween at Disneyland

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Disneyland for Halloween was just as much fun as its Florida counterpart. Decorations were found up and down Main Street USA and throughout the Lands. Even the Partners Statue in the Hub area in front of Show White's Castle was in the Halloween spirit with pumpkins and autumn flowers surrounding the base of the statue.

Over in Frontierland, Mexico's Day of the Dead is honored with colorful decorations, skeletons and a plaque explaining the holiday to those unfamiliar with it.

Then there is the Haunted Manison which for the last 13 years has gotten transformed into the Haunted Mansion Holiday featuring characters from the movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Guests get an idea of the changes as they enter through the Haunted Mansion's gate.

I do not want to spoil anyone's experience inside the Haunted Mansion Holiday but you will see transformations and additions to the classic attraction. Like these singing pumpkins which might remind you of some Grim, Grinning Ghosts.

I loved Disney's way of celebrating Halloween at Disneyland.

Disney Pic of the Week: Paradise Pier

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

The Paradise Pier area of Disney's California Adventure reminded me of the New Jersey Shore boardwalks. Which is exactly what Disney wants you to think of Paradise Pier. The attractions, however, are most definitely Disney. Disney even added a little gem and gave the water fountains for World of Color something to do during the day. Goofy comes out in Black Tux and proceeds to conduct an Instant Concert with the fountains.

Look for Goofy's Instant Concert on the daily entertainment schedule.

Paradise Pier Mouse Ear Hat

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Disney's California Adventure is the only park I saw being built and experienced right when it opened. That was pretty cool. It has changed a great deal over the years and some bad ideas like Superstar Limo closed while good attractions like Soarin' is cloned over at Epcot, albeit without the totally radical airplane hangar and themeing.

Paradise Pier is designed to remind you of beach boardwalks with carnival games and amusement rides like ferris wheels and swings. Beachy (new word) music plays and the sounds of people screaming and laughing from the roller coaster above you fill the air. It's a good place to have some fun. You can even have your face painted.

Fisheyed Disney

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

A fisheye lens is an ultra-ultra wide-angle lens that produces strong visual distortion intended to create a wide panoramic or hemispherical image. Fisheye lenses achieve extremely wide angles of view by forgoing producing images with straight lines of perspective (rectilinear images), opting instead for a special mapping (for example: equisolid angle), which gives images a characteristic convex non-rectilinear appearance (Source: Wikipedia).

Did you get all that? Fisheyes have been a favorite fun lens for Disney photographers for years. The lens, as the above definition says in a round about, distorts straight lines near the edges. That effect can ruin a photo unless used creatively. Earlier this year, I obtained a Sigma 15mm Fisheye lens for my Nikon D700 FX (full frame) dSLR camera. Last week, I used it at Walt Disney World for the first time. Let's see how I did.

I look for three conditions when I am shooting with a Fisheye lens:

1. Compositions with curved or circular objects which wrap around the image.
2. Put something of interest in the center and let straight lines get bent to lead people to the frame's center.
3. When a Fisheye is the only way to get far enough away from a subject to photograph it in cramped quarters (like a ride queue).

The huge red guitar outside of the building containing the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster in Disney's Hollywood Studios was a perfect subject for a Fisheye composition. The curves of the piano keys, guitar, palm trees and even the railing all work to create the uniqueness of a Fisheye photograph. You will also notice how close I got. I was learning over the railing to get as close to those piano keys as I could. Just like any wide angle lens, you want to get as close to the main subject as you can. It is easy to loose a subject in the extreme wide angle of a Fisheye and make a photo confusing.

Nikon D700/Sigma 15mm, 1/640s, f/13, ISO 200, EV 0.

With the Bust of Walt Disney at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in Disney's Hollywood Studios, I got in real close and let the Fisheye distort all the straight lines of the nearby celebrity busts, palm trees, lines in the pavement and building. Notice how the bust itself is relatively distortion free.

Nikon D700/Sigma 15mm, 1/250s, f/8, ISO 200, EV 0.

In the Test Track queue where you can use the giant touch screens to design cars, it is really tight quarters for even a wide angle lens. The Fisheye worked great to tell the story of how Disney entertains and educates even while waiting in line.

You will see more Fisheye photos in the future as I found it a fun and useful lens to have in Disney themeparks.

Disney Pic of the Week - New Orleans Square

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

It's funny how our topic for this week is in line with my first visit to New Orleans. Soon I will be able to draw comparisons between Disneyland's homage and the real French Quarter and surrounding area. My friend has already informed me that finding a non-alcoholic mint julep will be impossible. I guess we'll just have to head west until we reach the homeland. Wait, does that mean Cafe du Monde's beignets aren't shaped like Mickey heads?!

Magic Kingdom's New Fantasyland at Night

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

A couple of weeks ago I got to enjoy the attractions added last year to Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom for the first time. Having spent most of the day at Epcot, I arrived as night was beginning to fall. I set up across from the Under the Sea -- Journey of the Little Mermaid where Ariel was hanging around its entrance. Having to use long shutter speeds for proper exposures at night, I used a tripod to steady my camera.

From the bridge to the Be Our Guest restaurant is a beautifully lighted waterfall. I am amazed at how you can still photograph stars over the attractions at night. Disney does a good job of minimizing light pollution to enhance the lights, parades and fireworks shows.

As I left Fantasyland towards the Haunted Mansion, Rapunzel's Tower loomed over the lanterns of her kingdom at the best themed restrooms in Walt Disney World.

In the past, I talked about how bringing a tripod in the parks is not hard to do if you rent a locker. Did you know, if you change parks on the same day, you only have to pay for a locker once? Bring your receipt and you can get a locker by just paying the deposit at the next park. You get that back at the end of the night.

Disney Pic of the Week: Frontierland Entertainment

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

While wandering around Disneyland's Frontierland, I heard music and laughter coming from the Golden Horseshoe Saloon. Upon entering, I saw the place full of guests and a troop calling themselves the Laughing Stock Co. doing a show. Well, I strapped on my fisheye lens and headed to the balcony. I wanted to capture the Golden Horseshoe Saloon in all its glory.

The Golden Horseshoe Saloon opened in 1955 with several other original attractions at Disneyland. It was where Walt Disney and his wife, Lillian, celebrated their 30th anniversary with the debut performance of the original Golden Horseshoe Revue. Walt kept a private box (now public) upstairs to the right of the stage so he could watch the show whenever he felt like it (Source Wikipedia).

Lisa will be here on Thursday to share her favorite Disney Pic of the Week about Frontierland Entertainment.

Editing photos is common, especially cropping out excess space. Rather than re-write the lesson, I'm re-posting it for anyone who missed it the first time. I lied, I'm just posting the link.

Billy Hill and the Hillbillies' The Devil Went Down to Georgia

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Scott and I decided on this week's theme long before Disneyland announced they were retiring Billy Hill and the Hillbillies' show. If you haven't seen them yet then hop a plane, jump in the car, or skip over to Disneyland before their final show on January 6th. Yes, they're that good.

Here's just one of my many photos of the band and it features my 2 favorite fellas.

Photographing Tutto Italia Desserts in Epcot

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

When Travel and Food Photography mix, I like to include members of my party in my food photos. In this case, my daughters presented their dessert choices after our meal at Tutto Italia in Epcot's Italy pavilion.

My youngest decided she did not really like what Tutto Italia had for dessert. The server was kind enough to get her a simple ice cream dessert with a chocolate cookie stick. As you can see, she was very happy with it.

My eldest ordered the Gianduja-Chocolate Torta which is a chocolate and hazelnut torte with whipped cream and raspberry sauce. She determined it to be delicious.

I also got a more traditional food picture of the Cannoli ordered by another member of my party. It must have been good as it was gone before I got a second shot at it.

Remember to include members of your dining party in your visits to any of the wonderful Walt Disney World restaurants. Not just the Character Meals. They make for fun and memorable photographs.

Where in the World #307

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

We have a couple big holidays approaching:

Happy Hanukkah! May this truly be eight days of light!
From Millan.Net From Millan.Net From Millan.Net

The US is celebrating Thanksgiving this week. I'm going to be sappy right now, so if that's not your thing, skip to below:

I'm very thankful to be here on AllEars because I've made wonderful friends who have shared such magical fun and heartwarming moments with me.

And I'm so thankful for you, Players. When Barrie Brewer left this game that she created and made it so loved, you could have left because I'm not a photographer like her or post it differently. But so many of you stayed and even take my breath away when you say it's part of your week, how you share it with friends and family. That's amazing! So thank you, Players!

------------------ Sappy Stuff Ends Here ------------------
I'm also thankful that I LEAVE FOR WALT DISNEY WORLD IN 8 DAYS! And pumpkin pie. I LOVE pumpkin pie! Also stuffing and green bean casserole; give me those 3 things and I have my perfect Thanksgiving dinner. Oh and mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. That I eat after watching the Macy's parade and before I watch "Miracle on the 34th Street". :)

 Where in the World #306

And here's the answer:
Where in the World Photo Fun

It's the totem pole at the Wilderness Lodge Mercantile at, of course, The Wilderness Lodge, one of top three faves! It features Mickey, Goofy, Donald who got stuck holding up the other two, and the Lodge's mascot, Humphrey the Bear, who doesn't care if he's on the bottom. He just rolls with things.

Humphrey the Bear is also in the Canada pavilion wallpaper on the Official Disney Parks Blog; because Humphrey rocks, that's why!

Cindy Jett, seriously? That's a thing? Rub Humphrey's nose for a magical vacation? How did I not KNOW that?! (Adds Humphrey on the must do list for trip,)

John Bickers, you served your country for an entire career! Now what are you going to do? "We're going to the Wilderness Lodge!" Right?! Did you make the mistake my family made? Where you plan all these things to do at night.... right after you relax a bit in the hot tub. Yeah, that'll turn you into one non-moving guest who just watches the geyser go off the rest of the night. LOL

Alan Mize, you never even stepped foot in the Lodge? Never? Ever? Oh Alan, Alan, Alan. Here's my advice: go have dinner at the Whispering Canyon Cafe. Ask for ketchup. You're welcome.

Annie Snodgrass, get your boyfriend to the screen.... is he there? HI!! You don't know me but I am pretty much known as a voice of reason and wisdom anywhere you go. (stop giggling, Players! You're going to blow this for Annie!) Now you look like a smart man, so you know that at least 2 nations of the world have celebrated giving thanks in the past month. You know what's important to give thanks for? A person who cares about you, say like your girlfriend. In a recent poll of best and smartest boyfriends in the world of how to show that girlfriend how thankful you are to have her in your life, do you know the number one answer was? Taking her to the Wilderness Lodge in Walt Disney World for Valentine's weekend; coincidentally, it's my number one answer too. No, there's no other answers. So as you give thanks, remember these details: Annie and 407-WDISNEY. I bet you can even get free dining. That is a lot to give thanks for.

Back to the game!

Disney Pic of the Week - Disneyland Dining

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

California cuisine and it's comfort food cousin can both be found all around Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA. Looking for something in the middle? There's plenty of that to go around as well, just check out the menus. Personally, I love the baked potato soup at Carnation Cafe. Regardless of where on property you are, there's something yummy on the menu.

Anthony carves prime rib and other meats at Goofy's Kitchen, a buffet with characters. Located in the Disneyland Hotel, anyone can enjoy the restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Guests can park at Downtown Disney and take a short walk over to the restaurant.

Scott serves up his photo on Thursday, although he might be stuffed.

Happy Thanksgivukkah!

Dining in Disneyland's Blue Bayou Restaurant

Back in 1981, my then future wife and I visited Disneyland and rode on Pirates of the Caribbean. We noticed the sit down restaurant in the ride's beginning as our boat slowly floated past. We promised ourselves we would eat there someday. The day finally arrived 32 years later. We enjoyed a fabulous lunch at the Blue Bayou Restaurant in Disneyland's New Orleans Square. It was just as special as we imagined it would be. From our entrées of Le Special de Monte Cristo Sandwiches to the desserts. Hope you enjoyed a personal Disney Pic of the Week about Dining in Disneyland.

Kitchen Sink Stuffed at the Beach Club Resort

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Like most Americans, I am recovering from stuffing myself at yesterday's Thanksgiving Day feast with my family. For those of you not living in the United States of America (USA), I equate it to the feeling after one devours a Kitchen Sink sundae at the Beaches and Cream restaurant in the Beach Club Resort.

What's that you say? You have never heard of the Kitchen Sink sundae? Below is a picture of it.

I bet you feel stuffed just looking at it. Happy Thanksgiving from the US of A!
