Waterfall Fit for a Princess

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Under the Sea - Journey of the Little Mermaid in the new addition to Fantasyland has quite the queue. You'll wander through a maze of rocks, winding down passed a waterfall and towards sunken treasure, all before heading indoors to the 2nd part of the queue.

Here it is, my submission for Disney Pic of the Week - Waterfalls

New Fantasyland, New Photo Opportunities

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

With the new additions to Fantasyland, came new photo opportunities. I have been enjoying all the new views from fellow Walt Disney World fans since the expansion opened to the public last November. I have not been back yet to see all the new attractions and beautifully Imagineered landscaping and structures. I did get a sneak peek of one of the attractions about a month before the "official" soft openings.

The queue for Enchanted Tales with Belle winds along a treed path into the house Belle and her father lived. I found this view of the Beast's castle off in the distance which may get blocked once the trees grow to their full height in the future. Of course, the castle is not very far away in reality. Caulk it up to Disney's famous use of forced perspective.

The Crystal Palace in the Magic Kingdom. So many answers said how much you love this place for its architecture (after all, as Jeff Blank says, "It's amazing how this building goes from the 1890's of Main Street on the wing closest to it and to more of a Tropical design on the Adventureland side. The transition from one style to the other is seamless.".), its atmosphere, the character meals and more. But, like me, you also know that you can get a breakfast reservation before the park opens. That means you have Main Street to yourself! Not to mention the chance to take all the pictures you want of it, the Partners statue, and the castle without anyone blocking your photos! You know what I mean, Karlene Farley, Jeff Blank, and Jeremy Hardy. :)

Jenn Crosby, you have a deal! Let's make the reservations and get the cameras ready!

Sandie Albrecht is absolutely right. Guess what record we broke this week? The 555! The new record for submitted answers is 571! Way to go, Players! (See what happens when you play, Ed Elder? Don't make that face. You know I love you more than my luggage!)

Disney Pic of the Week - DiVine

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Have you heard of DiVine? No? Ah, well, she is a performance art character who gracefully mingles with trees and plants. She is one with and of nature. DiVine comes to Disney's Animal Kingdom from Living World Entertainment. You won't find her on the published entertainment schedule in the park so plan ahead by visiting www.wdwent.com for performance times.

Escaping the Elements at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Here we are in August with roughly 7 weeks to go before the Fashion Police start writing citations for wearing white after Labor Day. Don't they have other things to do like, oh I don't know, get actual jobs. Yes, you heard me, Joan Rivers. Go write some jokes and get off the red carpet.

In my visits to Animal Kingdom (We all know Disney owns it, right? I don't have to write Disney's Animal Kingdom. OK, good.) I have found it to be the most humid of all 4 parks with the least amount of air conditioning and places to cool off. This list will look bare compared to the others and come with warnings on what to avoid. Kungaloosh! No, that's not it. Nahtazu!

The Oasis

Scattered benches can be found in shaded or mostly shaded areas. Before you cross the bridge into Discovery Island, there's a cavern with benches. They're well shielded from direct sunlight and rain.
lkb-EscapingElements-AK-Oasis.jpg

If you cross the suspended bridge, you'll see another bench on the right. It's partially protected from the elements. Watch where you step, it isn't potty trained.
lkb-EscapingElements-AK-Oasis2.jpg

Discovery Island

Pizzafari - Air conditioning is impossible to find on Discovery Island so unless you want to hang around the restroom, take a seat at the counter service eatery.

Africa

Do not, I repeat, do not enter the hut-looking edifice beside Kusafiri Coffee & Bakery. Yes, there's a high top table there but inside is hotter than outside. I learned that one the hard way.

Mombasa Marketplace/Ziwani Traders - A few folks can sit by the gift shop entrance. You're outdoors and partly shaded.
lkb-EscapingElements-AK-AfricaShop.jpg

Partially shaded open air seating can be found to the right of the restrooms.

Honestly, I can't think of anywhere else to really rest and get out of the sun. Several counter service restaurants have outdoor only seating. There are benches everywhere but they aren't located in desirable areas.

This park needs some adjustments to help keep Guests healthy.

Don't forget, First Aid is the place to go if you feel sick and/or are showing signs of heat exhaustion. First Aid is located on Discovery Island, on the far left, beside Creature Comforts and is staffed by nurses.

If you missed the earlier entries you can read about my tips for beating the heat at Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Magic Kingdom.

Details of Disney's Hollywood Studios

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Every Disney park and resort has many amazing details which help to immerse us guests into the theme of attractions, areas and entire parks. Disney's Hollywood Studios has numerous little details I am guessing many guests do not see or look for. Here are a few I found.

This golden Buddha statue is one of several found outside the Great Movie Ride reproduction facade of the Mann's Chinese Theater entrance.

Fire Station No. 1 (the home of the fire truck that appears at the end of Muppet*Vision 3-D) can been seen if you look north from the entrance to Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano. I found it looking a bit unkempt.

It's the framed letter from George Washington to His Majesty Mohamed III of Morocco in Restaurant Marrakesh in the Morocco pavilion in Epcot. Morocco was the first ally America had in their Revolutionary War. This letter is a reproduction; the King still has the original that's been handed down through the generations. I love that.

Disney Pic of the Week: Cars

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

The subject this week is cars found inside the Walt Disney World resort. This is not about the movie, Cars, whose characters are seen numerous times in and around the parks. These cars are seen on display at Epcot's Test Track and around Disney's Hollywood Studios. Street performers on Main Street USA and Hollywood Boulevard often are driving around in cars of a different era.

With Chevrolet being a major sponsor at Walt Disney World, I was a little surprised to find a Yellow Ford Taxi Cab sitting on Sunset Blvd. in Disney's Hollywood Studios. To eliminate the distractions surrounding it, I got in close and focused on the emblem of the car's manufacturer.

Create Your Own Disney Vacation Postcard

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Legions of Disney Parks lovers return "home" year after year whether it's to Anaheim or Lake Buena Vista or perhaps Paris, Hong Kong, or Tokyo. We've bought the single and multi-pack postcards and mailed them off to family and friends. A question I always ask myself is, Am I sending the same postcard to (insert name here) again? I can't recall which set of postcards I bought last time. Was it Epcot or perhaps Animal Kingdom? Crikey. I haven't the foggiest idea.

Well, I came up with an idea and started creating my own postcards and why not, I have hundreds if not thousands of images from which to choose. Not only that but I can make them artsy and truly separate mine from those mass produced.

Here's what you'll need to create your personal postcards:

1. A sharp image you took on a previous trip

2. Photo editing software

3. Creativity

4. A local printer or online printer to produce the postcards

I started with this recent photo taken at the entrance to Rock 'n' Roller Coaster® Starring Aerosmith at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

lkb-CreateCard-1.jpg
Taken with my Canon PowerShot SX30 IS. I used a mini tripod and set it on a trash can. ISO 800 f3.2 1/6 A long exposure allows the camera to record light and colors correctly in low light.

You don't have to use professional photo editing software to crop, adjust contrast and color, and add effects. I happen to use Adobe Photoshop CS3. Take a look at cnet.com for photo editing software and free trials. Just remember to be careful when downloading anything from any website. Make sure your anti-virus protection and firewall are working.

lkb-CreateCard-2.jpg

With the software I made my first crop, taking out space that doesn't take away from the overall image. Then I added lens flare to the headlights followed by lighting effects. You'll notice the top right and bottom left corners are very dark, also on the top left, creating a more dramatic look.

lkb-CreateCard-3.jpg

Since we're designing postcards, add some text to the photo, perhaps the location or a friendly message. You can search for Disney fonts at www.mickeyavenue.com or a broad range of typestyles at dafont.com

lkb-CreateCard-4.jpg

This font is called Waltograph. I also used a warp text effect called bugle.

One website that doesn't require you to purchase large quantities of postcards is Zazzle.com. Start with a blank slate or select designs.

lkb-CreateCard-5.jpg

Before uploading your image to any website, make sure to read the guidelines regarding image size and quality. You don't want to waste money on blurry images and have everyone call you and ask, Where did you go, again?

Don't worry, my actual postcards don't have half my copyright mark slapped onto the front. It's imprinted on the back.

There you go. You can create your very own unique souvenirs that people will keep.

lkb-CreateCard-6.jpg

Antiquing at the Grand Floridian

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Modern day cars are seen all over Walt Disney World property and they belong to or are rented by you. Here and there you might spot a cool vintage car that makes you say, "Oooooh." If you're a car lover, like my mom, you'll quickly take notice of the prop cars Disney has scattered around their property.

This antique Cadillac, I'm guessing early 1930's, is parked just in front of the main building doors to the Grand Floridian resort.

Progressing through the Walt Disney World Resorts

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

I post a lot of photos of the parks at Walt Disney World. This week I want to share a few from the wonderful resorts.

Value resorts are how I could afford trips when I first discovered the convenience and joy of staying right on Walt Disney World property. My girls loved the food courts at the Disney's All-Star Resorts with the large variety of family oriented meals and snacks. Over the years we stayed at Movies, Music and, my favorite, Sports. The over sized icons on the buildings and around each of the resorts always a treat for the kids and for their parent's cameras.

For those who have stayed at the All-Stars, the bus transportation area photo below will look very familiar to you. I never have had problems with the Disney Transportation system besides a long wait once in awhile. It saved me from car rental fees which would add a day or two to my vacation time. I liked that.

As the years went by my two daughters became teenagers and we got better at saving for trips, the larger moderate resort rooms helped a lot during a long stay. Our favorite was Dixie Landings which is now known as Disney's French Quarter - Riverside for its charming Mansions and Bayou lodges.

Over the past few years, themed rooms at the moderate resorts have opened for guests. Curious, we checked out a Pirate Room in Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort.

Argh! Smooth sailing and good sleeping in a Pirate Room.

When my daughters went off on their own, my wife and I have gotten to splurging on ourselves by trying out the Deluxe resorts. We plan on spending a day or two at the resort to really soak up the atmosphere, enjoy a meal at the sit-down restaurant and relax.

Disney's Wilderness Lodge speaks to the spirit of the great National Park lodges of the American West as soon as you walk into the lobby.

Nikon D700/Tokina 11-16mm, 1/15s, f/5, ISO 800, EV +0.3, 16mm focal length, tripod.

I believe many families progress through the Walt Disney World resorts as we have done. Depending on our plans, we stay at either level these days. Our daughters still like to come with us, too. We are a true Disney family.

Where in the World #294

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

Karen Ramirez: ¡ Viva México ! From Millan.Net

Nice try, Team Hill! I don't have kids and I took that picture in Camp Minnie Mickey. :)

It's the celebration aboard the paddle wheel boat at the end of Fantasmic! Mickey is reprising his role from "Steamboat Willie" as they celebrate defeating the villains! Like so many of you said, Players. I adore this show for some many reasons, but the biggest is seeing Mickey in all his roles as well as his standard, most simple outfit of his red shorts, white gloves, and yellow shoes. As Annie Snodgrass so rightly named us, I'm a Fantasmaniac!

 Where in the World #294

Kerri Coggins, I'm impressed! You named the 2 dwarfs in the picture!

Karen Smith, here are some napkins for your arm where your Mickey ice cream is melting all over it. :)

Disney Pic of the Week: Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

The Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show in the Streets of America backlot area at Disney's Hollywood Studio is an exciting, fast, adrenaline inducing live show. It is a fun and challenging to photograph with lots of fast action, jumps and stunts. Each stunt is carefully choreographed and practiced to look far more dangerous than they are. The fact that it looks so dangerous is a tribute to the men and women who put on the production each day.

Anchoring Your Disney Photographs

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

In Landscape Photography, the use of an Anchor Point is commonly used in compositions. An anchor point is an item in the foreground that is in focus that the eye can lock on to and then wander out into the photograph. You can use this concept in your Disney photos to improve your compositions and bring a professional quality to your photography.

The anchor point in the photo of the Victoria Gardens in Epcot's Canada pavilion in the World Showcase is the plaque rock. Notice how you see the rock first before your eyes move into the flowers and trees beyond.

Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/125s, f/16, ISO 560, EV +0.3, 28mm focal length,.

In nature landscape photography you will often see rocks, trees or flowers used as anchor points as I did at the Ticket and Transportation Center (TTC). I only needed to wait for a monorail to complete the picture.

In Disney parks, anchor points could be anything.
