Disney Pic of the Week: Animals

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

There are all kinds of animals in Disney themeparks. Some are real like in Disney's Animal Kingdom and some are not real like the entertaining audio-animatronic animals found on the Jungle Cruise in the Magic Kingdom. Guests can even meet their favorite Disney animated animals like Baloo the Bear and King Louie from the Jungle Book and many others.

What are your favorite animals in a Disney themepark?

Last December during an AllEars.net photowalk at Disney's Animal Kingdom, we came upon this relaxing hippopotamus underwater on the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail.

A Vivid Glance at Disneyland

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

I'm going to make this blog short and sweet.

Playing around with my Canon PowerShot SX30 IS, I took a few shots when the train we were riding (Disneyland Railroad) pulled into Mickey's Toontown station. Seated with my friend Lisa and her 2 little boys, I quickly grabbed 2 snapshots. For the first image, I set it to Program (P) and ISO 400. The camera selected the f-stop, f4, and shutterspeed, 1/640. I then changed the settings by turning the dial to Scene and selecting the parrot icon for Vivid. Again the camera made the techincal decisions; ISO 80, f4, 1/125. These are the results.

Jiminy Cricket

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

It's animal week here at the Picture This! blogs. As Scott said, animals can be found in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and formats. A consciencous little fella, a grasshopper in fact, is a dear friend of Pinocchio, Geppeto, Figaro, and Cleo. You can be his friend, too. Jiminy Cricket sometimes visits Rafiki's Planet Watch at Disney's Animal Kingdom. He's also been known to frequent Epcot. Check with a Cast Member at Guest Services in either park to find out if he'll be meeting fans that day.

Disney through a Crystal Ball

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

A crystal ball is believed by some people to aid in the performance of clairvoyance like witches and wizards. At Walt Disney World, the most famous crystal ball is found in the Haunted Mansion where the ghost of Madame Leota is calling spirits from the world beyond. Crystal balls are a fun prop to create very unique photos.

Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/400s, f/10, ISO 200, EV 0, 230mm focal length, flipped, cropped.

Here are some tips for using a crystal ball in photography:

1. Things are upside down or inverted when looking through a crystal ball so you must flip them in your photo editor (see below).

Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/320s, f/9, ISO 200, EV 0, 230mm focal length.

2. Focus sharply on the crystal ball image and let the background go out of focus.

3. If you can not levitate the crystal ball (I wish I could learn how to do that!), find a secure place for the crystal ball or get the aid of an assistant to hold it (see above).

4. Lens choice is up to you but ones that can focus closely are easier to use.

5. Be careful when using a crystal ball in the Sun. They get very hot, very fast!

6. Find an interesting subject like maybe a fantasy castle.

Wow! I actually gave you a tough one? I know you're saying FINALLY!

Here is, as Morgan M. put it, the "spinning chipmunk, mouse thing on the Dumbo ride at Magic Kingdom"! This happy little fella and his fellow critters have actually been removed in the Fantasyland renovation. So here's our tribute to them: thanks for flying along, little buddies! Mackenzie D. says it for all of us: "I love those little guys!"

Clay Anthony was the first to send in the correct answer! Congratulations to Clay and to all the readers who got the answer right: Morgan M., Mackenzie D., Vera Williams, Karen Northway, Craig, and Tristan Clark. Each of you are entered in this month's winners' drawing.

AND! Special congratulations to Kyle Kenney for his answer: Something. LOL!

Now, drum roll! It's time for our monthly winner! By the way, I think we had a record number of winners this month: 1,214!! Let's call that the highest and see if we break it!

The April 2012 winner is Nancy O'brien! Congratulations, Nancy! You win AllEars swag from Deb Wills! I will be emailing you very soon!

Disney Pic of the Week - World Showcase Entertainers

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Upon arriving at Epcot, grab an entertainment schedule and you'll see on the backside, a horizontal time and location chart of musicians, actors, characters, etc... They can all be found within World Showcase, a lively portion of the park dedicated to countries around the globe.

This week Scott and I salute the men and women who keep us clapping and coming back for more.

Outside the Mexico pavilion you'll find Mariachi Cobre, a long-established group of musicians who also teach, tour, and perform with famous orchestras and singers.

lkb-WSEnt-MariachiCobre.jpg

Every time I see them I want them to play Cielito Lindo (Pretty Little Sky). The song is a standard and one I learned as a kid by listening to Menudo records. Of course back then, I had no idea the song pre-dated the group...by roughly 100 years.

How to Check Your Auto Focus

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

You got the shot but you're not sure if it's in focus. It's better to find out right there and then if A. You need to take the photo again - or-
B. You can keep the settings you have and continue shooting

It's quite easy and while I don't have graphs and diagrams to show, I'm certain you can follow along.

Step 1. Take the photo. I'm just sayin'.
Step 2. Press the review button. It should look like this. icon_review.jpg

99% of the time, a photo will look clear on a small LCD screen because it is so small. In order to view the image and get a real sense of what it looks like, you'll need to enlarge it. Every camera is different. Some require you to move a knob like you were zooming in while taking a photo. Others have a special button with a + symbol on it. To know exactly how your camera increase images on the screen, consult the manual. They love it when you hold them and gain knowledge from their semi-glossed pages.

Step 3. Enlarge the pixels on the screen to look carefully at portions of the photo. You can move the image left and right using the 4-directional pad, dial, or Atari joystick. I'm kidding, try Nintendo's controller.

Atari-X.jpgNintendo-X.jpgcamera-dial-pad.jpg

Take a good look at it and then make your decision.

Here's proof I take sharp photos with point and shoot cameras.

Peace out.

10 Must Take Photos: Magic Kingdom eBook Review

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

My friends over on the Disney Photography Blog have come out with a new ebook series based on the many requests they have gotten about where and how to take the photos they post. The series called 10 Must Take Photos will cover each park in Walt Disney World and Disneyland. They have released two so far: Disneyland and Magic Kingdom. Today, I will review the 10 Must Take Photos for the Magic Kingdom.

La Fontaine de Cindrellon in the Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida
La Fontaine de Cindrellon (Cinderella Fountain) one of the 10 Must Take Photos in the Magic Kingdom.

As the authors state, this is their list. Each one of us could come up with our own list which would differ. What the ebook does well is for each Must Take Photo, it tells you the where, how and why. Those answers are often not included with park photos you see online. In fact, that is my biggest complaint with most photo sharing websites.

Cinderella Castle Must Take Photo page
Cinderella Castle Must Take Photo Page.

Each photo gets a large introductory page so you can delve into it, study it and see it. See it? Yes, many times we do not take the time to really "see" a photo. With large photos it is much easier. The next page has a smaller version of the same photo for reference. The page tells how to get to the location where the photo was taken. Explains why the photo is considered a Must Take and gives specifics on how the photo was taken. Additional Photo Tips may be included giving ideas for alternative photos for the subject.

I have all but two of these Must Take Photos. I am planning on using this ebook soon (see below) to complete the set. I will report back in a few weeks on how I did.

The price of the ebooks are only $4 (US) each and can be ordered by following this link. What are your Must Take Photos?

Vacation Notice
I will be on vacation the next couple of weeks to, you guessed it, Walt Disney World. Remember the Photowalk announcement? Still spots available! If can not make it, you can follow my Disney Twitter feed @Scottwdw or on Google+ at Scott Thomas.

Where in the World #229

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

Hobbes And Snorky, even if you're not first to get the answer right, you're the first to get a shout out! Is that good? :)

Rob And April Vanderpool, not only do I remember and still love the old Zippidy Do Dah Tip Of The Day, I have the music as a ringtone!

Yeah, you, Carol! You and your Halloween party tickets and surprise weekend Disney World getaway from your husband! ...ok, I'm jealous.... ;)

Hey, Players, The Hoekzema Family is in Disney World right now and reading this. So, quick! Wave hello and then they will wave back. Ready? Go! Smiley from millan.net

Mickey Eckert, I don't know if Dumbo's spinning chipmunks are being put back. Wouldn't it be great if they were, now that we have the Spinning Chipmunks Appreciation Society? I've ordered t-shirts...

Here was last week's Challenge:
 Where in the World #228

And here's the answer:

WOW! This one was so difficult, only FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY FIVE of you got it. Hey, don't worry about it. They can't all be easy. :)

As Chris Kelly put it, this is the "the sunroom thingy", also known as - you tell them Hayley Valk, "the atrium/greenhousey-looking thing". The full answer, Bruce Hinterleinter? That's right: Haunted Mansion solarium at Liberty Square, Magic Kingdom, Disney World, Florida, USA, Planet Earth, Milky Way Galaxy Drive. Seriously, how are the new people like Julia Grubbs going to keep up when we talk in technical jargon like that? LOL!

Gee, thanks for the evil laugh, Michelle Boykin! "We have 999 happy haunts... but there's room for a thousand- mwahahaha!" Now I got the heebie jeebies. Kyle, Amanda, and Sabrina Kenney, could you hold my hands as I get over being scared? Because I usually have my Pal Mickey with me in the Haunted Mansion, but he's in the other room so I'm by myself. Erin Connell, you got over your fear of the ghosts; you come too, okay? Here we go... oh no, there's one! Haunted Mansion Ghost bouncing

Larissa Huda was the first to send in the correct answer! Disney Pic of the Week: Main Street USA

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

I often tell people until I walk up Main Street USA, I have not arrived at Walt Disney World. The sights, sounds and smells are like walking into the past to the time of Walt Disney's imagined everyday Main Street. As we all know, Walt had quite the imagination so his Main Street is full of lively characters and entertainers. Not to mention colorful ones like the Dapper Dans Barbershop Quartet who come out to sing to guests everyday. Make sure you grab an entertainment guide upon entering the Magic Kingdom so you do not miss them.

Photo Album - ( I Survived) One More Disney Day

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

A long, long time ago (February 29, 2012) in a state far, far, away (from my home) a fantastic event took place. Legions of sleepless fans and sugar-induced kids of all ages descended upon a happy place for it opened it's gates for 24 hours straight begining at 6 AM Pacific. These photos and comments tell the tale of one such crazed girl who lasted almost 19 hours without a nap. Although her oh-so-awesome friend Yoli took a nap for her while sitting upright in a not-so-comfortable wooden chair, upstairs in The Golden Horseshoe while a gazillion people made endless noise before Billy Hill and the Hillbillies took the stage for the first time that day at 11:15 PM to a standing room only crowd. :breathe:

lkb-OneMoreDay-Line.jpg
When I arrived at the esplanade, it was still dark out, and only those who had slept overnight were allowed through the gates. I couldn't make heads or tails out of the queue. There was an undercover Disney security guard at bag check for those with bracelets. He's not a morning person or good at being undercover since he showed me his badge.

lkb-OneMoreDay-EndLine.jpg
For those familiar with the area, there were multiple lines running thru the bus drop off lot. Then the line went down Harbor Blvd and supposedly ended at the satelite parking lot. I sat down on a bench and waited for the line to end and here it is.

lkb-OneMoreDay-Cameraman.jpg
At least one news crew was present. This cameraman got the ears people camped out for 8 hours or more to receive. The same image was used on large button pins and handed out for free to everyone.

lkb-OneMoreDay-MinnieHug.jpg
Start your morning off with a hug from Minnie.

lkb-OneMoreDay-Lockers.jpg
Yes, the first thing I did was rent a locker. It was one of the best decisions I made. My friends and I made good use of it as we added and subtracted clothing layers throughout the day.

lkb-OneMoreDay-LLDumbo.jpg
My little buddy Logan piloted Dumbo for me. He found my backseat driving comical as I kept saying "Up, up, up!"

lkb-OneMoreDay-Treats.jpgMmmm. Chocolate covered apples. I don't think I bought anything. What's wrong with me?

lkb-OneMoreDay-Woozle.jpg
Is this a Woozle? I was probably getting tired by this point. I should have had some candy.

lkb-OneMoreDay-YoliPlutosBed.jpg
This is the infamous Yoli. That's all I am going to say. Sit girl, sit.

lkb-OneMoreDay-RogerRabbitQueue.jpg
I think it was my friend Jenn who first noticed this very un-Disney-like lack of cleaning. The light was filled with dead bugs and there was heavy dust in the ceiling, and around the light. Maintenance, please report to Roger Rabbit Car-Toon Spin and examine the queue.

lkb-OneMoreDay-MickeyMinniePJs.jpg
Around bedtime, Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy hosted a pajama party. They danced and posed for photos. It was very popular with those still conscious.

lkb-OneMoreDay-YawningGuysGoofyPluto.jpg
On our way out we caught more pajama party fun and these 2 hams. It was a good end to a very long morning/day/night. Yoli & I left Disneyland around 12:30-1 am, drove back to the hotel down the street that I had so smartly booked and konked out. We hit Downtown Disney, Goofy's Kitchen, and the Disneyland Hotel about 8 hours later.

Main Street Trolley Show

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

I occassionally catch singing and dancing when entering the Magic Kingdom, be it at Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Stopping to enjoy it is another story as I'm usually off to meet up with friends. I urge you to take a few minutes and hang back, relax, and appreciate the moment you just stumbled into.

My friend and co-AllEars.Net teamster, Jack Spence, wrote a piece complete with video footage of the Main Street Trolley Show about 2 years ago. I'll let him tell you all about the performance.

Where in the World #230

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

I can't believe I forgot to wish all the moms a Happy Mother's Day! So please take my belated wishes and thank you to Chris Kelly, Kerry A., and everyone who wished me a good holiday!
Smiley from millan.net

Chris Hanna, thank you for such a wonderful note! I appreciate it. :-)

Adrienne Bedsole, does this mean you just started playing our little game? Well, then! Here comes the Magic Kingdom steam train to greet you! (Wow, new players two weeks in a row...)
Smiley from millan.net

Lee Anastasi asked, "How on earth do you type all of those names? 495?!!!" Well, Lee, that's the kind of dedication we have here on the photo blog. Whatever it takes to make the readers-- ok, I'll confess. I don't type the winners' names. I import the weekly entries into a spreadsheet, mark the winners and sort by that column, copy them and replace the carriage return with a comma, and then paste them into the winner announcement. It sounds longer than it is, which is good because I prefer using the time to say hi to you guys.

Hi!

Here was last week's Challenge:

And here's the answer:

Hurry, Players! We have to get onboard the Jungle Cruise! I hear you see a very rare sight: the backside of water! waterfall

Clinton Dickinson sent in this answer: "In keeping with the last picture: Your cadaverous pallor betrays an aura of foreboding, almost as though you sense a disquieting metamorphosis. Is this boat actually leaving the dock? Or is it your imagination? And consider this dismaying observation: this boat is completely surrounded with water, and I'm you skipper. Disney Pic of the Week - México

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

I thought about writing this in spanish and I considered dropping references to famous Mexicans but instead voy a escribirlo en spanglish y cantare una cancion de Thalia o Luis Miguel o tal vez OV7.

After escaping with Captain EO, folks head into Epcot's World Showcase, a glimpse at 11 countries y un poquito de Africa. Mexico esta a la izquierdo. There are more eating and drinking choices in Mexico than any other pais. Un bar tequila y un restaurante estan inside the Aztec temple. Outside you'll find a margarita stand, a counter service eatery, and a sit down restaurant. The pyramid also houses a mercado where it siempre esta de noche and my beloved Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros.

Detail, detail, detail. Discover "ancient art" as you enter the pyramid or as I like to call it, Temple Beth Mexico.

Horton Sees a Digital Zoom

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

My Shooting Location: Universal's Islands of Adventure, Toon Lagoon, Me Ship, the Olive

Subject: Horton, who sits atop Caro-Seuss-el in Seuss Landing

Camera: Canon PowerShot SX30 IS

Balance: Elbows locked and rested on a wooden fence.

Lunch: I brought tuna and bought a croissant and bite size honey dew at a bakery.

Mode: Auto

Digital zoom set at 1.7

Q: What is a digital zoom?

A: A digital zoom is a camera trick that goes vroom. The optical lens goes as far as it can. Then the digital zoom increases the size of the man. He'll become somewhat blurry. Though he's not in a hurry.

lkb-DigitalZoom-Horton1.7
Digital zoom set at 2.1

Q: When can I use it?

A: If there's plenty of daylight don't have a fit. Make your body steady. Take the photo when you're ready.

lkb-DigitalZoom-HortonStandard.jpg
Digital zoom set at stanard, 50x

Q: Will my pictures look better?

A: Think of a fuzzy Deinse Huxtable sweater. The pixels get bigger and the clarity lesser. Listen to me, I don't lie like Vanessa.

lkb-DigitalZoom-HortonFullZoomA.jpg
Digital zoom set to standard, 140x

Here's proof, a visual, an example of my reason. Horton's trunk with a flower in season. It's hard to decipher and blurred it surpasses. If you stare too long you might need to wear glasses.

San Angel Inn in Mexico

The San Angel Inn restaurant inside the Mexico pavilion always looks so inviting. Nice rich colors and an awesome atmosphere which was I why I chose it for my Disney Pic of the Week on Mexico. Problem is I am not a fan of Mexican food. Or, as I was told once, I never had good Mexican food. I am asking you for some help. If you were to take me here, what would you recommend I order? Magic Kingdom Flag Retreat Ceremony

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

I took the time last October to watch the Flag Retreat ceremony which takes place each day at the Town Square flag pole in the Magic Kingdom. It is a beautiful and hushed ceremony. On this day, there was no music but just the sound of the security guards lowering the flag, folding it and presenting it to the Veteran of the Day. They then all parade to the Railroad Station through a path lined with Cast Members and to the applause of watching guests.

If you would like to witness the Flag Retreat ceremony, be at the Town Square flagpole about 4:45pm. The ceremony starts promptly at 5:00pm.

To my fellow Americans, have a safe Memorial Day weekend and give thanks to those who did not return from fighting for our freedoms.

Where in the World #231

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

We are celebrating Memorial Day in the US, honoring the people who died in service of our nation. To all those men and women & their families, thank you.
Smiley from millan.net

Patti Mccaffrey, I hope you and your fellow Canadians enjoyed your holiday weekend!

Vera Williams and her family will be in the World in 15 days; does anybody need them to bring you back something? :) Oh, I know! Mary Tackett is trying to get a reservation at the Boardwalk for August; could you guys stop there and tell them she deserves a room as a fellow Where in the World player?

Which is a good segue to...

We have another new player: welcome to Tinkerbell Wells! Look, everyone came to wish you hello!
Smiley from millan.net

Now Hobbes And Snorky tell me that you think you're better than them. Am I supposed to keep score? ;-)

Sophia Clifton, Club 33 in Disneyland was designed by Walt, although he unfortunately never got to see it finished. It's a members only VIP restaurant, based on the private VIP lounges of the large corporate sponsors that Walt visited during the 1964 World's Fair. I was lucky enough to visit it last August; so has Deb and other AllEears team members, and you can see photos here. It's a gorgeous restaurant, wonderful food and service. Tokyo Disneyland is the only other Disney theme park to have a Club 33; theirs is located on Center Street off World Bazaar instead of New Orleans Square.

Here was last week's Challenge:

And here's the answer:

The sign for Kouzzina by Cat Cora! My husband and I actually saw Ms. Cora herself in December! In fact, he could have gotten a picture and an autograph with her as she walked right by him, but he was looking down at his phone as he updated Facebook to say he was at Kouzzina and he didn't see her go by. ;-)

Betsy Silvestri and her Greek family give it their full approval, and Lily-pierre Couet highly recommends the Greek lasagna!

OK, Players, this is one of those that you will think is ridiculously easy and I will get 700+ answers, or I will see a lot of "Whew! This one is TOUGH!" I will say it's in more than one location...

Disney Pic of the Week: From A Ride

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Last fall I rode the Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios with a group of Disney fan photographers. We filled up a few rows and, without using flash which is not allowed, photographed most of the 95,000 square feet of the ride. I chose a wide angle lens and had some fun not only photographing the ride but some of my fellow photographers, too.

His name is Michael Summers and, when he is not in Walt Disney World, he is photographing trains. REMEMBER, do not use flash on a dark ride. Learn how to turn your camera's flash off.

What part of the ride did I photograph?

Lisa will be here on Thursday with her Disney Pic of the Week on the subject, From a Ride.

Indiana Jones and Canon's Smart Shutter

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Millions of folks with point and shoot cameras don't take advantage of even half of what their cameras can do. I recently chatted up a gentleman in a wholesale store who was looking at cameras. He had just bought a camera and was comparing prices. I was surprised, as I always am, when he said he only uses the Auto mode.

With this in mind, I set my Canon PowerShot SX30 IS to Smart Shutter (a mode found under Scenes on the top dial) and photographed the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

You be the judge. Is it really a smart shutter?

Evil Emperor Zurg

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

If you want a great photo on a dark ride, do what photographers do, cross your fingers that your vehicle stops in just the right spot. Set your camera to a wide aperture, slow down the shutterspeed to something you can hold steady, and take aim.

A few years ago I lucked out on Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin and got my wish.
