Where in the World #223

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

As Susie Howard said, we have some incredible Disney fans here! No matter how hard the challenge may be, someone always get it. :)

Heather Young, I'm glad you love Where in the World! We love you too! Smiley from millan.net And, Vincent Maltese, if I can help someone on a Monday, that is real magic. :-)

Karen Smith, I will work on your request for a villains' challenge, if not this week, for some time soon. Let me see what's in the photo folder.... here, Villain Villain Villain!
Team Vanderpool, have a magical day, week, month, millisecond... to you too!

Here was last week's Challenge:
 Where in the World #222

And here's the answer:
Tick Tock the Crocodile
Copyright © 2011 Erin Blackwell Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS, 14mm, 1/200s shutter, f5, ISO 100

Tick Tock the Crocodile grins down at us from above Peter Pan's Flight in the Magic Kingdom, with Captain Hook's pirate ship weathervane in the back! Ya think, Don Whiteman? ;) Now you would think that I'd have the song "You can fly!" in my head, but noooooo! Thanks to Craig who just HAD to sing it, I keep humming this: ;)

Never smile at a crocodile
No, you can't get friendly with a crocodile
Don't be taken in by his welcome grin
He's imagining how well you'd fit within his skin

Never smile at a crocodile
Never dip your hat and stop to talk awhile
Never run, walk away,
Say good-night, not good-day
Clear the aisle but never smile at Mister Crocodile

I hope you and your big sister get to ride Peter Pan together very soon, Carol Gamill! I was lucky: I rode it with my big sister in December when I took this picture. And it was a beautiful day, Mackenzie D. A perfect one. Happy sigh...

Special applause to Claire Gregory and Noah Schweizer (8 years old) for all their hard work in researching their answer!

Elyssa H. complimented me on the picture. Aw.... thanks! (happy blushing)

Disney Pic of the Week: Family & Friends

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Over the last decade, going to Walt Disney World has meant more than a family trip. We have gone with friends and meet new ones through Disney community events supported by AllEars.net and others. Picture This! has hosted photowalks bringing together people who love to take photos at Disney parks. These days, Walt Disney World to me feels more like a home then a vacation place.

This week's Disney Pic of the Week theme is about Family & Friends. The photo below brings both together. My daughter (on the right) practically grew up at Walt Disney World. She was not a big fan until she developed into a thrill rider and she took me along for rides I would never have attempted by myself. A few years ago, she worked at Walt Disney World through the Disney College Program. She developed many friendships during her time there but none stronger than the young lady you see to her right (our left) in the photo.

Miniature Effect

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

My new Canon PowerShot SX30 IS and I set out to test out its many cool features, one of those being the Miniature Effect. You've probably seen commercials using this trendy style of filming over the past few years. It's intrigued me and driven me crazy at the same time but having it available on my camera will only lead to trouble on my part, fun trouble.

The camera utilizes selective focusing, vivid color, and contrast. Selective focus is also known as tilt shift and specialty lenses are available for SLR cameras. Point and shoot digitals have built-in software that attempts to mimic the look.

I have some examples for you to peruse. Taken at Disney's Animal Kingdom, you'll find this docked boat adding to the overall feel of Asia. As you walk over the bridge from Dinoland into Asia, you'll spot the boat off to the right. If you're coming from Asia, you'll find it behind Drinkwalla, a refreshment/snack stand.

A normal shot looks fine.
lkb-Miniature-NormalBoat.jpg

A totally different image emerges when using Miniature Effect. It's so simple that it's just a matter of turning a dial and pressing a few buttons. As always, I encourage you to read your camera's manual. Off the top of my head, I do not know what other cameras offer this feature.
lkb-Miniature-Boat.jpg

I walked down to the "dock area" and grabbed a closer shot.
lkb-Miniature-NormalFrontBoat.jpg

The effect is visible but doesn't have as much of an impact as the shot of a larger scene.
lkb-Miniature-FrontBoat.jpg

When I return to Walt Disney World next month I'll test out Miniature Effect on more subjects.

Now say "toy boat" 5 times fast.

If you missed last week's blog, I challenged everyone to shoot in B&W as well as color to submit photos. Check it out. I'll start posting pics next week.

You can find me on Facebook.

Looney in Toontown

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Photographs document family members as they grow up and record our cherished memories of special events like weddings. Pictures from travel help us to remember all the wonders of the world and fascinating people we encounter. As Scott introduced on Tuesday, our Disney Pic of the Week theme is family and friends. I would like to share with you all an updated photo of one of my all-time best friends and I. You know the old saying, friends are the family we choose... or something mushy along those lines.

That's friendship!

Where in the World #224

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

Happy Easter to everyone who is celebrating the holiday today!

Thank you, Vera Williams and Sophia, for your nice notes! I'm so glad you enjoy Where in the World; it wouldn't exist without all of you. :)

Glad to hear the school trip went well, Don Whiteman, for you and your 151 kids! THAT's a Happy Gathering! :)

Alan Mize, what an interesting question, thanks! I read every response that comes in each week, not a program to scan the answers or the whole photo blogger staff. If you're interested, each response get added to a main file that I download and import into a spreadsheet. I then read what each of you has sent (thanks again, Players, for being here each week!): on the first pass, I mark who has it right, who got it first, and the people who send person notes that I will answer. I grab the winners to put into the announcement and also copy them to a separate sheet for the entire month for when I pick the monthly winner. On the second pass, I see who I marked as personal notes to answer. Then I type up the post and get a photo for the next Challenge.

Here was last week's Challenge:

And here's the answer:

OOO, what's on the television at The 50's Prime Time Cafe? That's the restaurant's official name, but Quincy Delcolletti and I call it Mom's.

Not did I keep my elbows off the table and ate all my veggies, Cousins Herb Miller, Matt Holley, Mike & Susan Hill, Robert Anderson, Chris Gallagher, Karen Schlumpf, Steve Knapp, Jared Orth, and Tom Buck, but I drew Mom a picture so she could put it on the refrigerator. :)
Beth Mcmeekin, I so agree with your son that pistachio pudding is the best green food; and it has pistachios, so that's healthy, like veggies, right? ;)

A lot of people said this was a favorite Disney restaurant, like Noah Schweizer. Me too. :)
Thanks to Kelli Sangston, I really want a peanut butter and jelly shake! And Quincy Delcolletti, thanks for the s'mores craving I have now. LOL!

I thought this was going to be a medium to difficult challenge, but you guys surprise me like always! We had 329 winners! And they are:

Disney Pic of the Week - Flags and Banners

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

As if Disney parks don't transfer your mind to another place enough as it is, the extra touches found everywhere add even more elements to really cement happy thoughts. Some of those smaller and not necessarily noticed items are banners and flags that flap in the breeze.

I for one have always wanted the heavier flags attached to ropes that line parade routes. C'mon eBay!

During my recent trip to the West Coast, I found a colorful blend of nautical flags at Disney's California Adventure. Strung around a gazebo sitting on Paradise Pier, they draw attention to the spot to meet Captain Mickey.

lkb-FlagsBanners-DCACaptainMickey.jpg

Keep an eye out and grab pics of flags and banners on your next visit to see Mickey.

Sail on back to see Scott's photo on Thursday.

Keep up with my freelance writing and photography via my Facebook page.

Black and White Challenge - Entries

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Two weeks ago my blog entry encouraged my readers to try photographing in black and white or to at least convert some color photographs into black and white to see the difference. A few of you sent in photos and I'm delighted to post them. This challenge will run for the rest of 2012 so be sure to send in your photos. You can read the original blog here.

Craig

I have problems with my color vision (commonly called "colorblind" but more accurately "red/green color weakness") so although I usually take color pictures, I often appreciate B&W simply because I know what I see is what others see. If I play with the color in a photo as you and Scott sometimes do, I might end up with something that looks fine to me, but screwy to all you normal people (well, normal sighted, anyway.)

This is a picture that I took at Disneyland several years ago. I have it among the pictures which rotate as the background on my computer but I really like the black and white version, and have it in the rotation, too.

Thanks again for your photo hints on AllEars.

BWChallenge-Craig-TrainColor.jpg

BWChallenge-Craig-TrainBW.jpg

"Normal sighted, anyway" made me laugh. I see you pointing at me. Just don't point at me in cyan. I'm a little weak in that area.

Lauren

My name is Lauren and Walt Disney World is my passion. I am 14 years old and have been to WDW 19 times. I read all the blogs on AllEars every day. I just love it. My favorite is Picture This! because when I go to Disney I always take tons of photos.

When I saw your challenge on the Color vs. Black & White, I took to it! After searching through my photo files I only found a couple of black & white ones and they were from IllumiNations and were a little blurry. So the first image is from January 2011, when I was there for my 13th birthday.

I then decided to find an image that I could turn black & white with my Photoshop CS5. This image has a story behind it. So my dad found out that Disney offers educational classes for certain age groups. So he signed my up for an Animation Class. I got into MGM, sorry, Hollywood Studios, before it even opened. I noticed after the picture was taken that a Cast Member was adding finishing touches to the Planet Hollywood Store.

How about a strong round of applause for Lauren! Keep up the good work!

Jeffrey

Thanks Lisa, love the blog!!

I guess he's shy. We can always make up a story or 2 for Jeffrey.

Streets of America Photowalk

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

Announcing the
Streets of America Photowalk
Tuesday, May 29, 2012 from 12:30pm to 3pm

I will be hosting this photowalk to explore the Streets of America in Disney's Hollywood Studios. Disney Imagineers went to great lengths to create details found in both cities represented, New York City and San Francisco. This is a great opportunity to discover some of the hidden treasures found among the streets of the big city sets. There might even be a surprise or two along the way. The photowalk is limited to 20 people and you can sign up on the AllEars.net Facebook page (click here). We will meet up at the Studio Catering Company seating area between 12pm and 12:30pm.

A photographer sets up for a photo along one of the Streets of America in Disney's Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida.

Where in the World #225

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

Birthday shout out, Players! Happy Birthday (on the 16th) to Agnes Ciotti! Smiley from millan.net I hope you have a magical year!

Christi Ison, what a fantastic note! THANK YOU!

Rob And April Vanderpool, I am having a string of magical milliseconds right now! Just one of those times when I'm feeling it, you know? Happy sigh!

Kyle Kenney, one of the best answers ever! And completely accurate. ;-)

Sophia Clifton, please remember me when you become a Disney merchandise designer! I buy LOTS of merchandise and I can say I knew you when you were just planning your goals! ;-)

Hey, Lynn Brooks and Cindy and Daughters Stinsons, what time is the 3:00 parade? The Hoekzema Family need to know for when they're in Disney in less than a month. LOL! That's still a great joke, isn't it, Jamie K? (I have a cast pin with this joke on it. ;)

Mary Tackett, I can't believe the high school teams' lousy priorities! A game before going to Walt Disney World: my goodness! What are they teaching kids nowadays! :-)

Here was last week's Challenge:
 Where in the World #224

And here's the answer:

Copyright © 2011 Erin Blackwell Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS, 12mm, 1/40s shutter, f5, ISO 800

Maureen Handy, in answer to your question:, yes. :) Because:

Hide your puppies - it's Cruella De Vil! (By the way, I found at least four different spellings, but this is the official Disney one!) She's in the Disney's Dreams Come True Parade in the Magic Kingdom! Barrie Brewer took this photo and if you click on the above picture, you'll see it in full glory on her photography site!

That leads into something funny. Several of you pointed out that Barrie posted this exact same picture in January 2011. It's the second time I repeated one of her photos, so.... Remember last week where I explained the process for posting Where in the World each week? Well, this is the part where I laugh at myself for being a dork. Smiley from millan.net

Um, I mean, this is where I point out that I DELIBERATELY did both of these as a tribute to Where in the World Photo Fun founder, AllEars Trading Cards creator, and former team mate Barrie Brewer. That's my story and I'm sticking with it. ;-)

So what have we learned, Players? That yours truly doesn't know what pictures were in the game during the Barrie years. You gotta love me. LOL!

Barrie gave me several villains, including other favorites of mine, and I picked Cruella because she's in full blown De Vil mode there, isn't she? And without aide of a mask! I know I'm checking to make sure my dogs are okay!

Quick story: On the animated movie's 40th anniversary, a local radio station interviewed Betty Lou Gerson, the actress who played Cruella De Vil. She sounded like the sweetest aunt you can imagine, so the interviewer asked could she do Cruella's voice and she very nicely said, of course. Then she suddenly transformed into De Vil mode and ranted, "JASPER! HORACE!" and everyone went crazy with excitement! Including me. :)

Susan Hill thanks me for putting Cruella's song in her head. It wasn't in mine until Paul Dickson and Kerri Coggins started singing it, so like Kerri said: all together now!

Cruella De Vil!
Cruella De Vil!
If she doesn't scare you,
No evil thing will.
To see her is to
Take a sudden chill!
Cruella, Cruella De Vil!

Challenge #225: Where in the world is this?

A few players have been bragging about how easy the last few weeks have been. I won't mention any names, in case you end up holding it against them, but one person's initials are Patti Mccaffrey. :-D So just for them, we're having another double challenge!

Like the previous Grass and Seagull Challenges, we have a real toughie first - where in the World are these balloons?
 Where in the World Toughie

Here is the regular Challenge, which still has a higher difficulty level (or, at least, I think so):
 Where in the World #225

Do you know? Do you have a guess? Please send in your answer, before the end of the day on Thursday, April 19th, by clicking on the blue box below. Please do not post answers using the Feedback Form link at the bottom of this post. Remember to be specific with your answer - just naming a park will not get you into the drawing.

See you next week, Players!

Disney Pic of the Week: American Adventure

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

As an American, it is hard not to feel a huge sense of pride when visiting the American Adventure pavilion in Epcot's World Showcase. The Disney Imagineers did a monumental job in fitting together the history and elements of the United States of America in its art, accomplishments and architecture.

The pavilion itself was done in classic English Georgian style. Elements of the building were inspired by Independence Hall, Boston's Old State House, Monticello, and Colonial Williamsburg. The structure's 110,000 bricks are handmade from Georgian clay, which were then colored and aged to make them look authentic. The roof is made of slate and the floor of marble and copper.

Even at night, the American Adventure shines between Italy and Japan.

Photo Shoot with Goofy and Donald Duck

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

A huge draw at any Disney park is the opportunity to meet characters, the movie and TV stars that appeal to multiple generations. Moms and dads delight in photographing their children with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse while grandparents feel nostalgic about when they brought their family for the first time.

Then there are the solo travelers, like myself, who have photos with characters but sometimes would just take pictures of the characters themselves. We walk up beside the line and snap away during the nano second between visitors. When I want something more out of a character and the line isn't too long and the sun isn't making me melt, I wait. At the front of the line, a Cast Member will offer to take a photo of me with the character. I politely decline and turn to the character(s) and tell them we're doing a quick photo shoot.

lkb-GoofyDonald-Frontierland7.jpg

Alright boys. Work your magic.

lkb-GoofyDonald-Frontierland8.jpg

Show me your serious side.

lkb-GoofyDonald-Frontierland9.jpg

Work it. Work it.

lkb-GoofyDonald-Frontierland10.jpg

Okay, now happy.

lkb-GoofyDonald-Frontierland11.jpg

Yeah, now cool.

lkb-GoofyDonald-Frontierland12.jpg

Thanks! You're the best.

I never take more time than a family of 4 would take. My Canon EOS 30D is set to go as is the flash to brighten up gloomy days or shadows. There are words I never say to a character when photographing them even if it's a fashion shoot. These do not exist on Disney property. I'll let you decipher my code.

Next time I hit the parks, if an opportunity presents itself again, I'll try out my point and shoot camera. If you use yours outdoors, set it for action/sports or better yet, continous shooting mode.

American Adventure, a Telescope, and Paul Revere

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Hear ye! Hear ye! Come one and all to American Adventure where colonial days come to life except at the counter service eatery. Pheasant is not on the menu.

Situated among wooden barrels, presumably filled with air, a wood and brass telescope can be used to look out over World Showcase Lagoon or down the "street" towards Italy. Surely, Paul Revere would have loved this instrument as a tool. He could have called out, "The Italians have gelato! And I think Germany has beer in glass mugs. I'm not really sure but that's what it looks like." Alas the telescope does not turn towards the United Kingdom he never would have known the British had to get through France, Morocco, and Japan before reaching America. Odds are by the time they finished hitting all of the gift shops and snacked along the way, they would have forgotten all about the original plan.

lkb-AmericanAdventure-Telescope.jpg

Paul, I salute you or curtsy or high-five you. Whatever you prefer. By the way, your rolling copper mill is falling apart.

Disney in Washington, DC

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

A couple of weeks ago I told you I was vacationing in Washington, DC. If you are like me, even when I am not at a Disney park, I notice Disney stuff everywhere. Raise your hand if you point out hidden Mickeys no where near a Disney attraction. Uh huh, just as I thought. Lots of you. Then, I hope you will indulge me as I show you a couple of Disney related things I saw in my nation's Capitol.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History has an exhibit on American Pop Culture. The first item you see in the exhibit is a Dumbo ride vehicle. I noticed many children extremely happy to point it out to their families. I bet they would have rather been riding Dumbo than seeing it.

Not to far from the American History Museum is the United States National Archives. This building played a major role in the first National Treasure movie as Ben Gates, played by Nicolas Cage, steals the original Declaration of Independence from the vault inside the Archives. I also saw the Reading Room inside the Library of Congress which was used in both the first and second National Treasure movies but photography was not allowed even without a flash.

Where in the World #226

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

We have another Birthday celebration, Players! Happy Birthday (on the 19th) to Patti Mccaffrey! May you have nothing but pixie dust and happy thoughts this year!
Hold on: we have ANOTHER Birthday shout out! Happy Birthday (on the 21st) to Danielle Ciotti Harsley! May the Blue Fairy herself make your wishes come true!

That's it, Players. Come on, we can't let this special occasion go by without a group sing-a-long!

Smiley from millan.net

AND we have a new Player! Everybody, all together now, with a big friendly hello:

Hello and Welcome, Vicki Britt! We hope you love it here at Where in the World Photo Fun!

Smiley from millan.net

(Good job, everyone! Way to jump in with that Disney spirit!)

By the way, Vicki: it's not like this every week - birthday singing, welcome wagons. I just don't want you to be disappointed next week if it's... you know... quieter since we don't sing all the time. We're not "Glee". :-)

OK! It's time to look at our Challenges!

The Bonus Challenge maybe wasn't really TOUGH, but at least it was fun!

Look at me, Players! I'm inside a cluster of Disney Balloons! I was walking down Main Street in the Magic Kingdom and had to stoop to pick up something. When I stood up, I was inside the balloons! It's a magical world!

I worded the answer differently, Brian Mcwithey, but yours was funnier!

Those light-up balloons are calling us, Mackenzie D.... hear them? You know, we could get one and then, when we can't take it on the plane home, give it to someone who looks like they need Disney spirit. What do you think?

Lots of people got this one right! So I'm giving you full credit and you'll get an additional entry in the monthly drawing . :)

It's a Disneyland Viewmaster Disk in the Toy Story Mania queue in Disney's Hollywood Studios! Ah, Vewmasters.... Good times, noodle salad. (Who knows what movie that quote is from?)

But I don't have to tell you, do I, James and Kathy Berry? Not with your son's Mickey Viewmaster in the attic. Or you, Christopher Hall, with your 4 year old son getting that load of old WDW and Disneyland viewmaster reels from Grandma? Or Vicki Britt, you remember what it was like when we had Disney Viewfinders, and Melissa Kirk, you who have this Disneyland disk at home! I'm just going to sit over here and sigh with envy...

Disney Pic of the Week - Sunset Blvd

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Neon lights shine along the street lined with shops and eateries. Hopeful talents wait to be discovered. Hotel guests check in and Aerosmith fans take off for a unique concert experience. It's Sunset Blvd and it sits perpendicular to Hollywood Blvd (unlike in CA where the streets run parallel) at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park.

Citizens of Hollywood come out every 30 minutes or so and entertain guests not only on Sunset Blvd but on Hollywood Blvd as well. Here's a glimpse back at Tallulah Fruiti being exceptionally dramatic.

Scott will post his photo on Thursday. Same time. Same channel.

I'm on Facebook. Are you?

Roller Coaster Series: The Incredible Hulk

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Bag and hat holders rejoice! While the wild portion of your crew is loop-dee-looing and clutching onto the safety harness, you can relax and take photos. This is the start of a mini-series (before it becomes an interntational silver screen gem) of photographing steel, wooden, and other solid building materials, roller coasters. With each new thrilling blog (spread out over the year) I'll show you how to deal with various "obstacles" and offer important tips on how to get great vacation snapshots. Strap in. We're off in 3, 2, 1!

Action photos are one of the more challenging images to grab with a point and shoot camera because they take longer to record the image than a single lens reflex camera does. It can be frustrating at times but with some practice and knowledge, you can walk away knowing you nailed the shot.

There are various types of action photography. This turn we'll go over single frame still shots where you wait for the moving target to enter the frame. In other words, you hold still and the Tiki Room flies away.

First, find the location that gives you a clear view of the tracks and the car (or train, pod, bobsled, etc...). Most importantly be sure that the ride will be moving towards you or go by sideways. Strangely enough, there's no expression to be found on the back of someone's noggin.

Second, set yourself up. While the idea of using a tripod or monopod seems strange for a fast shutter, it does help steady the shot. If those items aren't with you, try leaning on a fence, trash can, or other permanent and sturdy fixture. When such things aren't available, keep your elbows in against your sides/chest to minimize camera shaking.

Third, find a spot to focus on. Make sure you aim the lense's focal point on the same plain that the roller coaster cars travel. If you focus on a tree behind the tracks, you'll wind up with a lovely sharp photo of the tree but not your peeps. I usually lock my eye on the tracks themselves, keeping my finger halfway depressed on the the shutter button so I'm always focused and ready to go.

Fourth, dial in the mode or manual settings. You'll get better photos when you make the decisions. The camera has no idea you're waiting for a speeding to train to come hurling by. The 2 best settings are Manual (M) where you choose the shutterspeed and aperture or Shutterspeed Priority (Tv) which decides what aperture to use based on the shutterspeed you select. Don't forget to make sure the ISO (film speed) is compatible with your lighting situation. The lower the ISO number (80, 100, 200), brighter light is required.

Fifth, be ready and anticipate when your loved ones will fly by. Point and shoots have a short delay between the time your trigger finger depresses the shutter button and when the photo is actually taken. Stay a step ahead if you can by mentally timing when the coaster passes by or better yet, grab a few test shots before your offspring and crazy friends go whizzing past you.

The examples below were taken at Universal's Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida within the first 30 minutes of park opening. My camera of choice is a Canon PowerShot SX30 IS. I decided to use the Auto mode. It's not easy to tell on images of this size but the car and people are not sharp like the rest of the photo. You know how I love to teach you what not to do as well as what you should do. :cheesy grin:

The set up. The Incredible Hulk Coaster blasts fog before the car comes out the chute.
lkb-HulkCoaster-PreShot.jpg

Timing the fog and when the riders would appear takes mad skills.
lkb-HulkCoaster-CarOut.jpg

Sometimes you get lucky and wind blows the fog away or it's only released for every other car. I forget which.
lkb-HulkCoaster-CarOutNoFog.jpg

Since I had already framed various portions of the track, I grabbed some other action.
lkb-HulkCoaster-CarAbove.jpg

Now, if it doesn't matter who's riding the coaster and you just want some cool photos, get the morning light to backlight the tracks, wait for the fog and the car and then go to town.

Yacht Club from Snapshot to Postcard

Photographic Innoventions by Scott Thomas

I see a lot of photographs from Disney parks each week from my contacts on flickr, Google+, Twitter and Disney message forums. That means I see a lot of photos in these two categories: Snapshots and Postcards. Before I go farther, these are my definitions and opinions and not those of AllEars.net.

A snapshot is a photo of something which has distractions of one kind or another. The subject maybe clear or lost in the distractions. Bad compositions fall into this category. I have hundreds of these kinds of photos. Many hold memories for me of places, people and things. They are put in albums and galleries to be shared with family and friends. Nothing people would consider buying if they saw it on a postcard.

This photo of the Yacht Club Resort at Walt Disney World is a prime example of a snapshot. While the subject is the Yacht Club and I used leading lines to lead your eyes to the resort, there are distractions. The most obvious is the large shadow from the lighthouse in the lower left. The other distraction is the boat on the edge of the left border. Remember to look around the edges before you press the shutter or on the LCD screen before you leave the location of an important photo.

Snapshot of the Yacht Club Resort from the lighthouse.
Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/200s, f/14, ISO 200, EV -0.3, 28mm focal length.

How to make this snapshot into a postcard? A postcard photo is one which I feel a person would buy in a shop of a place they are visiting to show other people where they have been. These are the photos I share online with my contacts and all of you here. To do this, I first walked up the dock towards the Yacht Club a few feet to eliminate the shadow and zoomed in the lens to clean up the edges.

Where in the World #227

Where in the World by Erin Blackwell

To all who come to this photo trivia game, Welcome! Along the way, the photos can make us relive memories and see details Walt's Imagineers put into everything we love in Walt Disney World!

Amy Filliben and Alan Mize, you're the reason why cavemen drew on walls! :-) Thanks for getting the movie reference last week.

James Hoekzema, I don't need to wish you magic for your birthday, because you'll be in Disney in a couple weeks! You'll have magic galore! It worked for Chloe Mayhew who celebrated her birthday last week about at Disney with her birthday pin; they couldn't give her enough magic! (And desserts, apparently. Lots of desserts. THAT'S magic!)

Here was last week's Challenge:

And here's the answer:

OK, so this was NOT tough! As I found out when 413 of you answered it and in great detail. :) In fact, I can't do any better than your own descriptions, like this one from Ed Elder: Outside of the Lego Imagination Center at Downtown Disney in the Marketplace. It's Maleficent's using her powers as the dragon to try to destroy Prince Phillip, but the power is deflected off of his magical Shield of Virtue. As Chris Stockton, Bob Hendrix, and Tommy Montgomery, Prince Phillip has his horse Samson with him because, as Chris' grandfather always said: "if you're going to be constantly under fire from an evil queen while outside the Lego Store in Downtown Disney it's important to have your trusty horse with you." That is a wise, wise man.

Now Jason Lenz used even more technical jargon saying: "Maleficent's fire thingy attacking Prince Phillip at the Lego Store in Downtown Disney!" He's a keeper, Melinda. :-)

Maybe she does need a breath mint, Carrie Henderson. Maybe that's why Prince Phillip needs that shield, block the bad breath. LOL!

Annie Snodgrass, I don't have to see you to know how excited you are about getting the answer right, because I can hear your squeals of joy all the way at my house! Go, Annie! Get the answer right!

Bonus pat on the back to Brenda Strohmeyer for mentioning the fabulous hot fudge sundaes next door at Ghiradellis!

As I said, we had 413 winners. Some of them more cocky about it than others; I'm looking at YOU, Team Hill! LOL!

Let's also thank Doug Olson's daughter for giving him the answer. Good for you!

Challenge #227: Where in the world is this?

You don't know how tempted I am to post a Disney D in one little spot of Walt Disney World; LOL! But I went with this. I'm not going to bother calling it tough because 600 of you will get it right. :)

 Where in the World #227

Do you know? Do you have a guess? Please send in your answer, before the end of the day on Thursday, May 3rd, by clicking on the blue box below. Please do not post answers using the Feedback Form link at the bottom of this post. Remember to be specific with your answer - just naming a park will not get you into the drawing.

See you next week, Players!
