Power Ranger’s Fashion

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Although I am aware that Power Rangers are hugely popular and each one wears a different colored outfit…OK that’s it, that’s all I know. My little brother was too old for the cartoon and action figures when they first premiered. No big loss. I’m still dealing with images of Skeletor, He-Man, Thunder Cats, and GI Joes and their catch phrases some 19 years later.

Something posessed me to go check out these vibrantly attired authority figures who don’t know Yogi Bear or Sister Christian. Having noticed them on Streets of America in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, I marched myself down there and waited with a crowd for them to show up. I asked a Cast Member from which direction the car would drive in. Puzzled he told me the stage came from behind him with dancers out in front. What? Since when do crime fighters have glam? Turns out the Power Rangers had been relocated over by the misty Coke bottles and Pixar Place. The group I was mixed in with was awaiting High School Musical 3 performers. Moral of the paragraph, read the schedule carefully.

Not knowing anything about what superhero powers the quintet holds, I watched a few kids greet them before I made my move. I quickly learned that Pink, Yellow, Red, Blue, and Green won’t talk. Awww c’mon! That totally stunk. No chance to ask Blue if he wants to grab a milk shake later on or Pink for some fashion tips. Befuddled I just started taking potos of each one and luckily they didn’t have many fans waiting so they posed for me. Then I thought it’d be more interesting to break one down part by part.

Red Ranger protects his noggin and identity with this vibrant yet sturdy helmet. Reflective lenses allow him to see out but prevent his enemies from viewing his eyes. The dog symbolizes his commander, Anubis “Doggie” Cruger, maybe. The gray mesh is durable and yet breathes easily.

Here we see the shoulders and part of the chest. You’ll notice the white line adds a streak of slickness and separates the red from the black part of the upper body.

Gloves are another important part of Red Ranger’s ensemble. You don’t want to leave fingerprints or get your manicured nails ruined while punching out bad guys. Large silver cuffs layer in that futuristic style from 2005.

Space Patrol Delta (SPD) belt buckle tells you exactly which squad you’re dealing with and yet defines the waist in this otherwise one-piece spandex unitard.

No couture-inspired superhero is complete without shiny footwear.
