Monsters, Inc

Light Meter by Lisa K. Berton

Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue is a fun dark ride at Disney’s California Adventure. You ride in a taxi thru Monstropolis reliving famous scenes from Pixar’s megahit film, Monsters, Inc. As you drive from room to room you’ll see Boo, Needleman, Smitty, and even Randall.

Catching these monsters from a moving vehicle can be difficult with a point and shoot camera. One way to help yourself is to plan ahead. Have your camera ready and press the shutter release button a few seconds before you normally would. That will help compensate for the lag time. You are allowed to use a flash in Monstropolis so go ahead.

Here are a few of the photos I got with my Canon PowerShot SX100 IS set to Auto. I am able to check the settings my camera selected by using Adobe PhotoShop CS4. All photos were taken at 1/60 at f2.8. Some had an ISO of 250 and some at 200. They came out pretty well considering I would have manually set my camera at 1/125, f2.8, ISO 400.

The coolest part of the attraction is at the very end when your cab stops in front of Roz. She has something personal to tell you. I once invited her to join my friend and I for lunch. Sadly, she had to work.

  1. Great photos and I couldn’t agree more that those monsters are hard to catch from the moving taxi. I have a ton of blurry/bad shots from my last visit to DCA. This is one of those attractions that grows on you the more you ride it. Gotta love Roz, she was doing an impression of the lady from the end of the Haunted Mansion saying “Hurry Back” and another time she made fun of me for taking her picture!

Lisa responds: The all-too-quick interaction with Roz is the icing on the cake of this attraction. Gotta love her.
