Fantasyland Expansion as of August 2, 2012

So it’s only fair that I return with an update regarding Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland expansion project. Even during the hot, hazy, humid days of the summer guests will see the imagineers frantically working towards making even more magic for the crown jewel of Walt Disney World.

As you walk from Prince Charming’s Regal Carrousel the you cannot help but notice the work that has been accomplished to date and the huge crane working ever so diligently in the Fantasyland expansion area.

For those of you who may not have recently visited Walt Disney World and the Magic Kingdom you may want to take note at the following photo which illustrates just how close the expansion area comes to the current landmarks in Fantasyland, notably Friars Nook.

You can now see some of the infrastructure for The Seven Dwarfs’ Mine Train.

I noticed a concentrated effort being put forth to finish the new facade for the expanded area.

One imagineer was really focusing on this particular spire.

You can see from this wide angle shot of the snow capped mountain towards the rear of the area….part of the Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid attraction. Why the snow? Well, didn’t the film take place in Norway? It gets cold there…and snows.

You can see Belle’s castle in the distance overlooking all the work being done.

And while all this is being done everyone should be reminded that the Fast Pass Distribution Center for Winnie the Pooh and Dumbo is now in front of Mickey’s Philharmagic.

  1. Welcome back Mike! I’ve been watching the new FL come together over the past few months and it amazes me how much work gets done in the course of a few days or a few weeks. I’m definitely looking forward to the first AP previews and now the Dec grand opening!

Heather, I noticed that all the areas within the FL expansion area are getting attention at the same time…with an obvious effort being put forth to have as much completed within the same timeframe as possible…rather than one at a time.

    Thanks for the note.

  2. Nothing earth shattering, but The Little Mermaid was written by Hans Christian Andersen, and is therefore set in Denmark, not Norway. Still chilly, not quite as cold! Article was interesting though, thanks!

Thanks Sarah…I was at least “in the ballpark.”

  3. I think they should do something with the old Snow White ride building than just make it a meet and greet. Perhaps they should consider a Bambi ride. There’s never been one of those. They could have the early scene, the snow scene, the forest fire scene, the fight over the doe scene and the final scene of Bambi at the top of the montain while his wife goes through labor and gives birth in the forrest without him. Kinda of cool, dontcha think?

Well Rupert, with all the changes with the FL expansion they need a special place for the guests to meet the princesses…seems that nothing of the sort was planned in the FL expansion area.

  4. It’s been 5 years since my last WDW and I am so incredibly excited for all the changes that are going on

Wow Victoria, before your next visit you should make a list of all the things that have changed and make sure you experience them.

  5. hey mike sorry to correct you but the little mermaid was written by hans christien anderson and was set in denmark as is her statue in copenhagen xx

Thanks Rachel…I always get my Baltic States mixed up.

    At least I was close.

  6. We are heading there in 10 days!!! I can’t wait to see the changes since our last trip in August 2011. I am hoping more will be open when we go back in October as well. (lucky me has a conference then so of course we need to come back)

    Have fun Laura.

  7. What makes you say the little mermaid was set in Norway?

    * * * *

Actually Rosemarie, it was set in Denmark..at least the original Hans Christian Andersen classic was so. Take a look at the ship design and you get this Viking sense.

  8. We are planning our trip for next summer with our then 4 year old Grand daughter, who loves Belle, so this expansion is such welcome news. We were there two years ago and saw the walls, so its nice to see the amazing work being done in such a short time. Thanks Mike.

    Harry,

Don;t forget you can meet Belle at the France Pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase as well.

  9. Mike,

Do you think there will be running water in the area where it looks like snow? Just trying to get a mental picture of what we will be getting in the end.

Y’know Jen, I expect there will be running water in several places of the FL expansion.

  10. I love that they’re building new stuff! I can’t wait to see the whole thing completed! Woohoo!

    Sara,

Well remember that Walt always said that his parks will never stop developing…guess he was right.

  11. Welcome Back!! Can you clarify…The original Dumbo got moved to where Minnie and Mickey’s house used to be correct?? My mother and I were debating this yesterday. And if so is that construction wall where dumbo used to be, or is it not that far out into fantasyland?

    * * * *

    Hi Halley.

Actually the two Dumbos are on the other side of the street where Minnie and Mickey’s house were.

    Mike

  12. We are heading to Disney next month for our third trip since the kids were born, and my daughter’s favorite thing in MK is Minnie’s house… is it “gone for good” or just hidden due to the construction?

Amy, I am sure the imagineers are cooking up some meet and greet ideas for the future…in the meantime…when you walk into the Magic Kingdom, plan to take an immediate right and enter into the building where Tony’s Town Square restaurant is located…you may find Minnie there.
