Ft. Wilderness Holiday Decorations

Every year many of the good folks who have campsites at Fort Wilderness during the Christmas season do an incredible job decorating their sites. It's become a tradition that brings the same people back year after year; and each year they add more and more items to their display. Many of you may have seen Travel Channel's Samantha Brown spotlight some of those campsites on one of her Disney Holiday specials. It a wonderful tradition and one that many of you asked me to take pictures of.

My AllEars® teammate Erin Blackwell (she's the one responsible for updating menus) and her husband, John, are longtime Fort Wilderness campers. Erin and John were gracious enough to take Julie and me around one evening to view some of the displays. Not only was it great to see these decorations, but it was also nice to talk to some of the people responsible for them. Needless to say they are very proud of all their hard work putting the displays together. And it does take quite a bit of their time. I learned that many of them arrive as early as September in order to get the site of their preference. In addition to Christmas, many now also decorate for Halloween.

Anyway, here are some pictures for you to enjoy:

The Christmas tree is located in the center of the "Settlement".

One of the ways to view the decorations is to take a horse-drawn sleigh ride ($60/per carriage). Click here for more information on the sleigh ride.

OK, on to some pictures of the decorations:

Many campsites had these really cool, homemade, Mickey lamp posts. Most didn't have the arms, just the pole and Mickey lamp, but I thought this one was pretty neat.

A number of campsites had these inflatable Disney movie screens. Can't you just see yourself on a beautiful evening, sitting in front of that watching your favorite Disney movie?

You can barely see the RV back there because of all the decorations.

I didn't want to interrupt Minnie as she was taking her bubble bath.

Wendy Crober:

Hi Mike,

I loved this blog. We have been there in December 5 times but have never gone to see the decorations at Fort Wilderness because we didn't know about it. Next time we go in December it will be a must for us.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Wendy

Cathy:

Mike,

Wow I never know how much they decorate at the campsites. This is definitely on my agenda the next time I am lucky enough to visit WDW during the Christmas season.

Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas season.

janice ambearle:

Penny from VT:

Thanks Mike for these photos. I saw the Samantha Brown special but your photos were much better. I just loved that Minnie golf cart!(and people around here think I'm an incurable Disney nut!)

I would like to thank you for all your hard work through out the year. I hope you and your family have a Magical Christmas and a Tiggerific New Year!

Maria:

You said some set up in September? Does that mean they keep their RVs there the whole time even if they're not?

DizneyMike replies: Maria, as I understand it, those that set up in September are there all that time....Mike

Sean Tildsley:

Hi Mike! Thanks for posting the pictures. We just came back on 12/7 from our 9 night stay at Ft. Wilderness. We stayed in the 700 loop near the RV with the castle and the movie ect. We decorated our site a little too w/Mickey blowup, Tigger & Pooh blowup and some lights on the bushes near our site. It was our first time to WDW at Christmas and we did rent a golfcart for one night just to drive around with the kids to see all the decorated sites. It really is truely amazing how much people do, its more than what most people do at their real homes. It was one of the many highlights of holiday things to see & do at WDW. Thanks again for the pics I haven't even had time to get mine off my camera yet since we are still getting ready for Christmas. Happy Holidays!

lynn matthews:

the 7th and 8th photos with the "homemade lamp post with hands" is my parents motorhome. They spend Christmas at Disney every year. Thanks for sharing this with everyone!

Erin:

We had a wonderful time that night; thanks again for asking us to meet you! I hope that we get a warm night to do this again next year, Mike! We'll have a golf cart and can take you around to see a lot more, including fantastically decorated golf carts, the Castle show, and maybe the people who own an original Fort Wilderness train car!

And if you'd like to see something like this, remember to check out the Fort Wilderness July 4th parade of Disney carriages and guest decorated carts; then the cart parade and pet costume parade! You'll see more great sites decorations too! In fact, Disney holds contests with prizes for both of the holiday events.
