Flower Power Concert: Fran Cosmo (singing the songs of Boston)

I went into Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival; and, that means a Flower Power concert at the American Garden Theater in front of the American Adventure.

Performing tonight was the Fran Cosmo (singing the songs of Boston). This is the first time that I’ve seen Fran Cosmo perform at Epcot. The band consisted of Fran Cosmo, the lead vocalist (and he played the guitar as well), four other guitarist/vocalist, (one of the guitarist also played the keyboard) and a drummer. I have one word to describe this band “WOW”. They were amazing! What a “rock and roll” band!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Boston, they are a 70’s and 80’s rock group whose roots are in the Boston area. Their sound has often been describe as “hard rock”. However, keep in mind that this was not “Boston”. This is a band that consisted of two former members of the band and they obviously do not own the name “Boston” and can’t perform as that group. But at these concerts all they perform are “Boston” songs. Fran Cosmo (lead vocals) and Anthony Cosmo (lead guitarist) were the former members of the band. The group Boston had a number of top ten songs and their first album sold over 17 million copies. Anyway, some of Boston’s hit songs are: More Than A Feeling, Amanda, Long Time, Peace of Mind and Don’t Look Back.

Tip: for those of you who don’t recognize songs by their title (like me) you can go to either YouTube.com and find a video or a website like Amazon.com and look up the greatest hits album. Amazon will allow you to play a few seconds of each song; just enough to help you recognize (or not) the song.

This band is a bit of a departure from the ’60s Flower Power groups normally seen at these concerts. So, they may not be to everyone’s liking. However, with that said, I thought they were outstanding and thought most of the audience agreed with me. They were incredible musicians, great showman and had the audience clapping, tapping their feet to the beat and singing along. The drummer was one of the best I’ve seen; just exceptional and the lead guitarist (Anthony Cosmo) played a solo that had the people up on their feet applauding.

I stayed for all three concerts and they didn’t change them much. My only disappointment was that they did not play “Amanda” during any of the shows. My guess is that “Amanda” is a slow song and this was a very upbeat, rock and roll concert. And a great one at that!

Here’s a few pictures from tonight’s performance for you to enjoy.

  1. Mike me and my sister in law Rosie met you and your wife last night at the Taylor Dayne show. So much fun. Hope to see you at the future shows. I will definitely be checking out your website.

DizneyMike replies: Jessica, my wife and I enjoyed meeting you and Rosie last night. It was a really good concert and enjoyed watching it with you guys. We’ll be at other concerts and hope to see you there…Mike

  2. I went to thoose concerts! And suddenly I fell in love with Anthony! And I took a picture with him(; He is very nice! (Even though I didn’t know him xD)

DizneyMike replies: Clarire, I’m glad you were able to get that picture….Mike

  3. My husband and I have been following Fran since 1974 when he was in a band with two of his brothers, the band was Celebration, all their music was original, and they were the best rock and roll band around, we even left a Boston concert at the Providence Civic Center to see Celebration at a nearby club the same night, they were that much better than Boston live. Fran and Anthony have a cd called Alien, their band name on that cd is Cosmo, it really showcases their talent. Anthony has downloads available on itunes, it’s Regrets by Casting, the song New Years Day as well as the rest are amazing, he is an outstanding talent in his own right. My husband and I moved to Ormond by the Sea,FL 20 years ago and have been able to catch Fran in Daytona a few times but it was a real treat to be able to see him at Epcot all weekend. I don’t think they were allowed to play any of their own stuff, I think people would have really enjoyed it. Thanks so much for your pics, we were there, front row, all 9 sets!!

DizneyMike replies: Thanks for all that great information…Mike

  4. Mike, I was the Bass player at the shows. Thanks for the nice review. I’m glad you enjoyed the shows. The whole band had a blast. The disney crew was awesome. They went above and beyond to make this show work. I also work at disney photopass. I just wanted to thank some of my co workers that came out to support the band. Mike, Rachel, Trent, Keith and Andy. Thank you. I wish I had a chance to meet you Mike. Maybe if there is a next time. I also want to thank the die hard fans that came out over and over sweating in the heat to cheer us on. You rock. Thank you all!

DizneyMike replies: Bernie, I loved the show and you guys were awesome! I do think that if you played as part of the Eat to the Beat concert series (instead of Flower Power) the America Garden Theatre would have been overflowing. It’s a different crowd. Hopefully Disney will bring the band back next year; I certainly hope so. Thanks for taking the time to comment and maybe one of these days well meet up….Mike
