Flower Power Concert: Tony Orlando

I went into Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival; and, that means a Flower Power concert at the American Garden Theater in front of the American Adventure.

Performing tonight was Tony Orlando. Even though he has performed at Epcot before, this is the first time that I have seen Tony Orlando.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Tony Orlando, he is a pop singer who had a number of hit songs in the 70’s and 80’s. Some of Tony Orlando’s biggest hits were recorded under the name “Tony Orlando and Dawn”. Dawn was a talented back-up duo. Anyway, some of his hit songs are: Tie A Yellow Ribbon Around An Old Oak Tree, Knock Three Times, Candida, and He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You).

Tip: for those of you who don’t recognize songs by their title (like me) you can go to either YouTube.com and find a video or a website like Amazon.com and look up the greatest hits album. Amazon will allow you to play a few seconds of each song; just enough to help you recognize (or not) the song.

Tony is a great showman and really knows how to work the stage and the crowd. His voice sounds as good as ever and he is backed up by a fantastic band. I stayed for the first two sets and they were completely different. In fact the only song he repeated in both sets was “Tie A Yellow Ribbon”. Since he only has four big hits, his concerts have lots of songs originally recorded by other artists. He started the first set with Neil Diamond’s “America”, a Led Zeppelin song (which was sung by one of the band members) and a lot of Beatles songs. The second set included a variety of songs from artist such as the Rolling Stones and Boston. Again, Tony didn’t do all the singing. A couple of the songs were sung by other members of the band, however, Tony did do most of the singing. Now I want to make sure you understand that this isn’t meant as a criticism of any kind, just reporting on what I saw.

Tony and his band are definitely worth seeing! They put on a great show. Although I would have liked to have heard him sing all his hit song in both sets, I was throughly entertained and really enjoyed the performances. They were that good! I hope you get to or got to see Tony Orlando perform

Here’s a few pictures from tonight’s performance for you to enjoy.

  1. We just saw Tony Orlando at Seneca Allegheny Casino in Salamanca, NY. What a fabulous show? Do you know which song Michael Jackson, the drummer, sings where he comes out from behind the drums and uses his sticks on everything including the floor. You have a picture of him doing this in your blog. Thanks.

  2. Saw Tony Orlando on Saturday, April 3rd at the first show in Epcot. We were with a group of 33 people all wearing the same shirt and sporting YELLOW RIBBONS. He invited two of our group on stage and gave one of them the mike and he sang the song with Mr. Orlando and the band…it was one of the most memorable trips we have ever had around EPCOT (we have done this every Easter for the past 12 years). Mr. Orlando was terrific and his salute to our veterans was stunning. God Bless him. What a show!!

DizneyMike replies: Tom, what a great experience! Thanks for sharing….Mike

  3. Mike,
I took my mom to see Tony Orlando when he performed in Morgantown, WV last year. What a treat – we were in the front row and he put on a great show. He is backed by a band which is just as talented as he is.

DizneyMike replies: Pat, I’m glad you and your mom got to see him perform. Yes, he is a great performer and his band is super….Mike

  4. Hi Mike,

I really like these blogs about the concerts at Epcot. It gives all of us a chance to see (in pics) the shows we missed. I am curious about something, you sometimes mention that you were not familiar with the perormers music. With some acts I can understand, but with others, for instance, Tony Orlando, his music was very popular in the late 70’s and he had a television show that was very popular as well. I definatley remember watching his show as a kid. I guess my question is, what kind of music do you like? or what is it that you listen to regularly?

DizneyMike replies: Tony, thanks for the comments and I’m really glad that you’re enjoying my concert series blogs. To answer your question about what kind of music I like; well, I like most music with the exception of rap. And although heavy metal isn’t a favorite I can tolerate it. So, I like pop, rock, blues, R&B, jazz, soft jazz, etc. I am less familiar with present day songs/performers than I am with “oldies” but love Pink and many other contemporary performers. Now I’m not sure where you got the idea that I wasn’t familiar with Tony Orlando’s music. I know and love his music. In fact, I can only recall one group that I really wasn’t familiar with in all the blogs I’ve written. Anyway, I went back and re-read my blog and here’s where I think you might have misunderstood me. I said “Tip: for those of you who don’t recognize songs by their title (like me) you can go to either YouTube.com and find a video or a website like Amazon.com and look up the greatest hits album.” The point I was making is that sometimes I don’t recall a song just by it’s title; I have to hear it to remember. That wasn’t the case with Tony Orlando, but it’s something I put in all of my concert blogs because believe it of not there are people out there who have never heard of him….Mike

  5. Thanks for the great photos, Mike! Do you sit way up in front or get into the center isle to get such good shots??

I’ll be there myself next weekend to see Peter Noone. Can’t wait, but I’m worried about the crowds…

    Lynne

DizneyMike replies: Lynne, I sit towards the center rather than up front. I prefer to be in the center under the roof, but if those seats are taken I will go further back to stay in the center. I have a great zoom, so being close isn’t necessary. Don’t worry about the crowds, you will be able to find a seat and see Peter Noone. Thanks for the comment…Mike

  6. Sadly my pass was in blackout. Tony Orlando puts of the best show of any performer Disney invites year in year out. With a not to Paul Revere. My best, Dusty

DizneyMike replies: Dust, too bad you didn’t get to see him this year. Hopefully you will next year….Mike

  7. Hi Mike,

Great photos! I saw Tony and his band last year and they really put on a great show.

An interesting fact about Toni Wine (keyboards, center stage behind Tony). She was Co-Writer of “Groovy Kind Of Love,” “Candida” & “Black Pearl,”. Some of her songs were recorded by the likes of Petula Clark, the Shirelles, the Ronettes and many more familar names. Also, she was the voice of Betty & Veronica on the classic Archie’s “Sugar, Sugar”.

    Great job as always!!

    Deb

DizneyMike replies: Deb, thanks for passing along all that great information about Toni Wine. Tony O did make one comment in the first set that she wrote Candida but that was it. It’s always great to hear from the “boss”….Mike
