A Window for Disney Legend Tony Baxter

jeaninebanner.jpg

"I'm not subtle."
--Tony Baxter

On November 1st, Disneyland bestowed its highest honor on Disney Legend/Imagineer Tony Baxter--a window on Main St., USA.

Tony Baxter Window on Main Street Ceremony Disneyland

Baxter has enjoyed a long and illustrious career with Walt Disney Imagineering since the age of 17, and maintains active in mentoring the current crop of Imagineers despite stepping down his involvement with the Disney company earlier this year (Thanks for the Memories, Tony Baxter!)

The dedication took place on Main St., in front of the Magic Shop, prior to park opening. Disneyland Resort President Michael Colglazier, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Tom Staggs, and Chief Creative Executive of Walt Disney Imagineering Bruce Vaughn took turns celebrating the many contributions Baxter has made to the company in general and Disneyland in specific.

Finally the window was unveiled with the help of Mickey Mouse and a gust of confetti.

After the unveiling, Baxter said a few words about his gratitude towards all the people who mentored him in the past, the satisfaction he's taken in mentoring others in turn, and his appreciation of the honor the window represents.

As is customary, Baxter was also given a replica of the window to keep.

The large audience of well-wishers included not only regular park guests, but a cavalcade of fellow Imagineers and Disney Legends. Some of the notables in the photos below include: Tony Anselmo, Jeff Kurtii, Marty Sklar, Jack Lindquist, Leonard Maltin, Howard Green, Stacia Martin, Bob Gurr, Eddie Sotto, and Stacia Martin.

Afterwords, Baxter took some time for questions, and had this to say about the sort of projects he's currently developing:

While the ceremony was certainly respectful and the honors it came with well-deserved, the one striking thing about it was its somewhat matter-of-fact nature. The tributes were gracious, but compared to the rowdy pirates present at Alice Davis' window dedication or the Carousel of Progress couple at the Sherman Brother's, seemed similar to what you might hear at a corporate gathering, rather than the Main Street of the Happiest Place on Earth. I'm not sure whether this might have been Baxter's expressed preference, but one was left thinking it might have been a little lacking in showmanship--something certainly never said about the rest of Tony Baxter's career.

Congratulations Tony Baxter!

Re-Imagined Disney Magic - Dining Part 1

laura%27s%20masthead%20copy2.jpg

Since it was a short two-night cruise, we didn't have a lot of meals on board. In this blog I thought I'd share photos of some of the dining locations.

Daisy's De lites replaced Goofy's Galley.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Still the same kinds of foods - sandwiches (including paninis), wraps, salads, and fruit. I especially enjoy the wraps, because the selections change over the cruise. I had a lamb and couscous wrap and a chicken, bacon, and egg wrap which were both very good.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Pete's Boiler Bites replaced Pluto's Dog House. The menu offers burgers (including fish and veggie burgers), bratwurst, chicken tenders, hot dogs, and fries. The toppings bar is outside - I sometimes make myself a salad from the lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and other toppings that are available.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Pinocchio's Pizzeria is essentially unchanged. Lee had a couple of snacks here.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Cabanas - I really enjoyed what they did here. It's got an Australian beachy (think "Finding Nemo") theme.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic
Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Very colorful.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The carpet has patterns inspired by aboriginal designs.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

I think the posts are meant to suggest surfboards, but I'm not sure about that.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

There's beach umbrellas, too.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

One of my favorite things was the seagulls on the ceiling! (Though they weren't saying "Mine, mine, mine!")

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Cabanas has two sides (same food available on both sides). At both entrances there are wooden murals. On the starboard side are Finding Nemo characters from the ocean:

And on the port side are Finding Nemo characters from the tank.

Palo received a makeover, including new wood, stone floors, lighting and carpet. The colors are inspired by Venetian artwork.

We didn't get to spend any time in Cove Cafe, but it was also redecorated.

Lumiere's, though it was not necessarily re-imagined, still got some attention - I believe that the carpet and chair upholstery are new.

I don't remember it having so many blue tones before. It's still quite beautiful.

In Part 2 I'll have all of the food photos.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic - Dining Part 2

laura%27s%20masthead%20copy2.jpg

It was a short two-night cruise and we only had two dinners on board - but they were in both of the "new" restaurants - the updated Animator's Palate and the new Carioca's.

We ate in Animator's Palate the first night. I shared details of the show in Part 1.

Here are some additional photos of the restaurant.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The artwork in the restaurant now features Pixar characters in addition to classic and contemporary Disney characters.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic
Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The chairs and carpet are new.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic
Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The menu is quite different than the one we experienced on the Magic a little over a year ago. In addition to listing vegetarian and lighter fare, it also highlights gluten free and dairy free options.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

I tried one of the new items - a Tomato Tarte with goat cheese and radish salad. I enjoyed it, it was kind of like a pizza.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Lee had the Black Truffle Pasta Purseittes - pasta filled with truffle-accented cheese served with a champagne sauce. It was quite a generous portion and he liked it.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The Butternut Squash soup is still on the menu, and Lee tried that and said it was good. It's drizzled with sour cream.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

I tried the Seared Red Snapper with scallops, crushed new potatoes and salsa verde. The fish was nicely cooked, though the salsa could've used a little more of a kick.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Lee ordered the Ginger-Teriyaki dusted Angus Beef Tenderloin, served with wasabi mashed potatoes, bok choy and tamarind-barbecue reduction. It was good, but not the best he's had - he still remembers fondly the tamarind beef from California Grill.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

I couldn't decide on desserts so I ordered two. The Duo Chocolate Cake was one of the no sugar added desserts - layers of brownie and truffle mousse with caramel sauce. The top layer was odd - light, but a kind of grainy texture. The brownie layer was better.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The White Chocolate Fudge Cheesecake was just ok - I was expecting something a little more chocolatey.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Lee had the Crunchy Walnut Cake. This has been on the menu every time we've eaten at Animator's, but it's been a little different every time. Unfortunately this was not one of the better ones - it's usually more of a chocolate ganache, but this was softer, and "gelatine-y".

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

We had both breakfast and lunch at Cabanas on Saturday. (No photos from breakfast, sorry.) Breakfast was largely the usual fare - scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, waffles, pastries, though there were some more unusual selections also, like grilled tomatoes. They have a very nice Muesli bar with lots of different dried fruits and nuts, though I wish they offered fresh berries. I get oatmeal from a different station and then visit the Muesli bar to liven it up. And I'm not usually a doughnut fan, but they had a small spherical jelly doughnut that was really good!

For lunch they had all kinds of choices - a much better selection that what is available at Lumiere's (and I think the food is better, too). Lots of different hot dishes - fish, chicken, pork, stir fry, side dishes, vegetables - I think there's something to appeal to just about everyone.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic
Re-Imagined Disney Magic

I really like what they've done with Carioca's, the new restaurant that replaced Parrot Cay. It's named after Jose Carioca, from "The Three Caballeros" - I guess it's appropriate that he was a parrot. :-)

Re-Imagined Disney Magic
Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The decor is inspired by festival time in Rio de Janeiro.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

I really enjoyed the colorful lanterns.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The restaurant seems much brighter and more open.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The parrot mosaic is still on the wall behind the buffet.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Speaking of the buffet (which is used for breakfast and lunch), at night it's concealed behind this curtain.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The servers have new costumes:

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

I like the design of the new china.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The menu is all new with ingredients and dishes inspired by South America and Latin America, like plantains, cassava flour, pork belly, black beans, bananas and pineapple. There were lots of things that looked good - it was hard to decide what to order. For the most part I was very pleased with my selections.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

I started with one of the specialty cocktails - a Caipirosa, which was essentially a more sophisticated sangria made the cabernet sauvignon, blackberries, cranberry juice, lime and "leblon cachaca" (whatever that is!). It was very refreshing.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Lee also ordered one of the specialty drinks, though he didn't realize it was the non-alcoholic one: Panchito with coconut cream, pineapple juice, salted caramel syrup, and lemon juice. The salted caramel syrup gave it a slight butterscotch taste. It was good, but very sweet - he thought it would have been better with some alcohol in it. :-)

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The bread service was warm banana bread (which most of our table enjoyed) and some seeded rolls, served with a mango mint sauce. Very light on the mint, fortunately.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic
Re-Imagined Disney Magic

For my first course I ordered the Peruvian Causa, which I had first seen on the Disney Parks blog a month or so ago when they did an entry on Carioca's. It's three layers of potatoes: yellow, blue, and white, with olive tomato salsa and huancaina sauce (don't ask me what that is). It was VERY good, though I was surprised that it was served cold. I think it would've been better if it was hot, but I still enjoyed it. It's also very attractive.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Lee had the Empanadas panzudas de carne - an Argentinian beef empanada with chimichurri. He enjoyed that.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

One of our table mates ordered the Ahi Tuna and Avocado Tower with red pepper wasabi, crushed fried plantains, and caviar. Another very attractive dish, and he said it was good.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Another selected the Deep Fried Lobster Croquetas with banana-lentil salad and creamed horseradish. The croqueta was pretty small and there was only one of them. I didn't hear a comment on this one, so I don't know if it was good or not.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

For my second course I tried the Sancocho de Pollo - a spiced chicken and vegetable soup. It was not very spicy, but it was tasty.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Lee ordered Sopa de Frijoles Negros Habanera - Havana-style black bean soup. This doesn't photograph well but it was excellent. (By the way, both of the soups are both gluten-free and dairy-free. The black bean soup is also vegetarian.)

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

I couldn't decide on an entree, so I ordered three. :-) And even with that there were a couple of others I would've liked to try and didn't. First was one of the vegetarian options: Fried Plantain and Malanga Pancakes. It was served over a medley of red and black beans. The pancakes were savory and not sweet - they were just ok. The beans were very good.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

A gluten-free, dairy-free option is the Lobster, Shrimp, and Mahi Mahi Skewers. This was my favorite of the three. It was server over Peruvian quinoa salad with dried mango and pineapple. The quinoa was terrific - the best thing I had all evening. Lee really enjoyed it, too. The lobster, shrimp and mahi mahi were also good.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Another vegetarian selection is Small Corn Tortillas, with Veracruzan refried bean dip, green tomatillo-chile and Salvadoran cabbage slaw. This was very disappointing. For one thing, it was served with flour tortillas and not corn tortillas. I think the idea was to make your own tacos, but the fillings weren't very appealing, and this didn't really feel like an entree.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Lee's entree was interesting - it was called Jose Carioca's, so I guess that makes it the signature entree for the restaurant. Before it was served our server came out and put this at Lee's place setting:

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The entree includes skewers of grilled Brazilian sausage, adobo chili crusted lamb and beef tenderloin, which are served with Mexican tomato rice, shrimp, chimichurri and lime-garlic orange mojo. As you can see, the skewer stand made for an attractive presentation. Lee said the various meats were just okay - a little dry.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

One of our table mates tried the Slow-Roasted Pork Belly (another one I thought looked good), and he enjoyed it. It was served with crushed sweet potato, creamy grits and collard greens.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

This entree is another one I wanted to try: Grilled Rum-marinated Swordfish with pureed black beans, roasted corn and boniato flakes (gluten-free). It also got a thumbs up.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The two entrees we didn't try at our table: Grilled Orange and Lemon-Marinated Flank Steak with onion, lime salsa and black bean rice; and Chicken Criollo Salad with roasted cilantro marinate chicken breast, papaya, mango, iceberg, endive, goat cheese and red malanga chips with sherry vinaigrette. Both are gluten-free.

The dessert menu had a lot of interesting choices, though you know me, I'm always looking for a rich chocolate dessert. There was only one option on the menu with chocolate in it, and it was one of the no-sugar added desserts. It was also included as one of the Sweet Temptations and that's what I ordered. It included the no sugar added Torta de Chocolate, a layered cake with apricot puree, the no sugar added strawberry cheesecake, and the De la Costa Cream Cheese Flan with caramel bananas and Pedro Ximenez reduction. They were all ok, but not great.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Lee ordered the best dessert of the evening: Coconut Tres Leches "Three Milk" Cake. It's described as a moist coconut cake soaked in three milks, served with light coconut cream. It was definitely moist and very coconutty, but fortunately it was not overly sweet like "tres leches" desserts often are. It was very good.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

One of our table mates ordered Carioca's Ice Cream Sundae made with dulce de leche ice cream and caramelized apples, with a churro on top. He enjoyed it.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

This is the full-size version of the De la Costa Cream Cheese Flan, which is gluten-free.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

The other dessert option, also gluten-free, is Suspiro Alimenea, a baked lemon cream topped with port wine meringue sprinkled with cinnamon.

We really enjoyed the new Carioca's menu, and thought there were lots of dishes that we would enjoy trying on future cruises.

Our final meal on-board was breakfast in Lumiere's. On the short two-night cruise, instead of going to the restaurant we'd been in for dinner the night before like we usually would, we went to the restaurant we had not yet been in.

It was the usual "Farewell" breakfast menu with pastries, fresh fruit, cereal, and various egg, breakfast meats, and pancake options.

I thought I was getting Eggs for the Road with eggs my way, choice of meat, and hash browns, but my server misunderstood and brought me pancakes instead of meat and hash browns. Scrambled eggs are always a crap shoot on board - I ordered them scrambled dry, but they were a little runny. The mini cinnamon roll I had from the pastry plate was very good, though - I really like those little cinnamon rolls!

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

Lee ordered the Chef's Farewell, an open-faced omelet with barbecue chicken, green peppers, onions, and swiss cheese. He's had it before and it's one of his favorites.

Re-Imagined Disney Magic

We enjoyed our meals - and were really glad we were able to try both Animator's Palate and Carioca's. Those two, as well as Cabanas, I think are all improvements over their former occupants.

Thor: The Dark World

jeaninebanner.jpg

Thor.jpg

"If you betray him, I'll kill you."
"It seems there'll be a line."

"Thor: The Dark World," the sequel to "Thor," is a return to our favorite Asgardians as they once again face down a threat to all things everywhere. This time around, the megalomanics are the thought-to-be-extinct Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, led by the appropriately evil Malekith. They seek the Aether, which is some sort of diffuse power that will enable them to turn light into darkness across the Nine Realms at the time of Convergence. See, the Nine Realms are the nine worlds supported by Yggdrasil, a mighty Ash Tree, and...

At this point, I'm reminded of the time I tried to explain M. Night Shyamalan's "Lady in the Water" to someone, and by the time I got to the invincible monkeys, they didn't want to hear it anymore. While you could spend a lot of time examining the complicated Norse mythology or the even more complicated technobabble Astrophysicist Jane Foster constantly spouts, it all boils down to a pretty clearly defined battle of good and evil woven around the alternate storyline of Thor's maturation and growth as a person. Director Alan Taylor has explained his concept of "Dark World" does not merely refer to the desolate world of Svartalfheim, but to the state of adulthood Thor must enter, dealing with difficult choices and losses along the way.

standard_medium.jpg

The key joy of this movie, as with the last "Thor," is Tom Hiddleston's Loki. Always riding an edge of unpredictability, Hiddleston keeps us constantly guessing as to how much of Loki is a tortured, self-loathing soul unable to come to grips with his adoptive past, and how much is just evil SOB. His interactions with the stolid, almost stodgy Thor are particularly good, and mirror their individual fighting styles--one quick and subtle as a poniard, the other blunt and direct as a hammer. A brief cameo by Chris Evans comes as a fun surprise as well.

5272f4309a77d.jpg

Where the film bogs for me, is anytime we cut back to Jane Foster. I wasn't a fan of this character in the first movie, and she hasn't grown on me in this one either. Whether she's obsessing with her research to the extent of being a jerk to the people around her or spending the last two years sobbing in her pajamas over a guy she met for...what, two days in the last movie?--Foster seems to hit most of the unpleasant female characteristics of the typical Lois-Lane-analogue. Natalie Portman is a fine actress, but she doesn't seem as though she has much more to go on here, than she did as Padmé, back on Tatooine.

5272f46dce066.jpg

On the whole, however, the film is a fun romp with enough terrain-shattering battles to suit anyone likely to be interested in superhero movies. If it sometimes goes overboard with the exposition and the more-mundane Earthling interactions, it more than makes up for it with the grandeur of Asgard and Loki's mocking banter.

5260580a4caa0.jpg

At the end of the day, reviews hardly matter anymore for the Marvel films--as they become progressively more intertwined it will become a matter of course that anyone wanting to keep up with one branch of the franchise will likely feel the need to see all the others in order to grasp the whole picture. If you, along with the bulk of Humanity, liked "Avengers," you're probably going to see "Thor: The Dark World," and like it, too.

"Thor: The Dark World" will be in general theatrical release November 8, 2013.

World of Color, "Winter Dreams" Debuts!

jeaninebanner.jpg

The big event of the Disneyland Resort's holiday season is the all-new holiday version of World of Color, "Winter Dreams."

IMG_3056.JPG

Hosted by Olaf, the Snowman from the upcoming film "Frozen," it's an extravaganza of light, and music and water. Starting off with a virtual choir made up of hundreds of guests who recorded themselves singing "Glow" with their webcams, it includes scenes from "Bambi," "Secret of the Wings," and a production of "Nutcracker," starring the Toy Story gang.

IMG_3061.JPG

The production also spotlights two numbers from "Frozen," including Elsa's song "Let it Go," and Olaf's song "In Summer."

IMG_3072.JPG

Not only programmed with new content, the technical side of the show has been updated as well, with ultra high-definition projectors expected to be four times sharper than the original World of Color projectors, and the addition of over 700 high-power LED lights lining California Screamin'.

IMG_2848.JPG

Here's a video of just some of the highlights featured in the new show:

At the premiere, Josh Gad, the voice of Olaf, was there to introduce the new show and answer a few questions afterwards.

"Frozen" Walks the White Carpet

jeaninebanner.jpg

On November 19, 2013, Walt Disney Animation Studio's "Frozen" had its world premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. A snowy-white carpet stood in for the typical red, as celebrity attendants were treated to hot chocolate from Ghirardelli and an actual mountain of snow with ice carvings.

P1090787.JPG

Present for the opening of the film were cast members Kristen Bell, Santino Fontana, Josh Gad, Jonathan Groff, Edie McClurg, Spencer Ganus, Tyree Brown, and Eva Bella, as well as Co-directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, Producer Peter Del Vecho, Executive Producer John Lasseter. Other luminaries attending included Bailee Madison, Dave Foley, and Kevin Sorbo.

"Frozen" will be opening in general theaters on November 27, 2013, but will have a special early engagement at the El Capitan Theatre from November 22, 2013, to January 5, 2014.

"Frozen:" A Tale of Two Unconventional Princesses

jeaninebanner.jpg

"When I was just a little girl,
My mama used to tuck me into bed,
And she'd read me a story.
It always was about a princess in distress
And how a guy would save her
And end up with the glory.
I'd lie in bed
And think about
The person that I wanted to be,
Then one day I realized
The fairy tale life wasn't for me."
---"Cinderella"

When the details of "Frozen" first came out, there was a certain amount of concern that it would be anti-feminist. The fear that the original tale of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen," which involved a female protagonist, Gerda, a female antagonist, The Snow Queen, and a largely-inert male rescue object, Kai, would be transformed into a conventional Disney Princess narrative caused a certain amount of hue and cry.

frozen51e6eb89086e8.jpg

In retrospect, it seems like a safe assumption that a movie written and co-directed by the first female director in Disney Animation feature history would star strong female characters, and Jennifer Lee has not disappointed us. "Frozen" is a tale entirely different from its fairy tale roots, but no less a story of a girl utilizing her courage and strength to save someone she loves.

frozen51e6eb922de12.jpg

"Frozen" begins with sister princesses Elsa and Anna as children, who find Elsa's icy powers a source of joy and entertainment until they accidentally injure Anna. While Anna is healed and her memory erased of the incident, Elsa is constrained to repress her emotions (which seem to trigger her uncontrolled freezing abilities) and hide herself away from everyone, Anna in particular, in an attempt to pass for "normal." After their parents meet their inevitable end, Elsa must be crowned Queen of Arendelle and the castle opened to the public, exposing the lonely Anna and the fearful Elsa to their deepest dreams and nightmares. When the dust settles, Elsa has run away, reviled as a monster, her powers inadvertently plunging the kingdom into perpetual Winter. Anna must set off on a journey to find and save her sister, enlisting the help of mountain man Kristoff, his BFF, reindeer Sven, and the eternally innocent snowman Olaf along the way.

Kristoff_Sven.jpg

Although Olaf has been the main thrust of the film's marketing to date, his charm is much more apparent in the context of the movie than the trailers. Although he could easily have come off as doltish, his brand of humorous, yet insightful naïveté resembles that of Hobbes (of Calvin and Hobbes fame) more than anything else.

frozen51e6ebd141f0c.jpg

The animation art is gorgeous, and the voice acting in the film is as good as you'd expect it to be, with Josh Gad as Olaf and the ever-versatile Alan Tudyk as the Duke of Weselton as standouts. The songs, by husband-and-wife team Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, are clever, if a little contemporary feeling in parts for such a timeless, fairy tale atmosphere ("Love is an Open Door," in particular, seems as though it could be sung as easily on Avenue Q as on the parapets of Arendelle.) Idina Menzel shows off the powerhouse vocals that won her the Tony for "Wicked" in "Let it Go," Elsa's big "Defying Gravity" moment, and Kristen Bell invests Anna with all of her not-inconsiderable quirky charm.

frozen526ecbf39ca51.jpg

While the film is marvelous, it's not a perfect one--for one thing, the time we spend with Elsa seems a little short-changed for such a fascinating, wounded character. Once she makes her initial transformation into full-blown Snow Queen mode, it feels like we only see her in a handful of action sequences until the end. There are also a few moments in the resolution that are a little more dependent on coincidence than might strictly be desirable, but these are relatively minor quibbles.

frozen52545be510d43.jpg

As a whole, this is a movie which aims for the scope and import of the more mythic Disney films of the past. It has been compared to "Tangled" quite a bit, because of the similarities in the princesses' facial features, but the feel of the story and the sense that this is a Serious Motion Picture more resembles "Beauty and the Beast" to me. While the plot seems initially fairly straightforward, it develops enough twists and turns by the end that it takes a very different shape than you might expect.

frozen5244b69ebbac5.jpg

Ultimately, however, I think this film ends up being special for the fairly novel themes it brings to the Disney Animated Feature pantheon: That there are other types of love besides romantic love; that personal power, whether involving ice, like Elsa, or the capacity for love, like Anna, can become warped and destructive if repressed with fear and wielded with inexperience; and that the courage, determination, and self-sacrifice to overcome those obstacles and rescue yourself and others is exclusive to no gender.

frozen523797d0f0bb9.jpg

"I don't wanna be like Cinderella
Sitting in a dark old dusty cellar
Waiting for somebody
To come and set me free
I don't wanna be like Snow White waiting
For a handsome prince to come and save me
On a horse of white
Unless we're riding side by side
Don't want to depend on no one else
I'd rather rescue myself."
--"Cinderella"

"Frozen" is rated PG and will enter into general release on November 27, 2013.

Grand Opening of The New Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop.

jeaninebanner.jpg

On November 15, Ghirardelli Chocolate Company officially opened to replace the recently-departed Disney's Soda Fountain & Studio Store, to become the new Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop.

IMG_2890.JPG

Despite some overcast weather, spirits were bright as host Andrea Feczko introduced the Hollywood High band and a few familiar faces.

IMG_2893.JPG

She was followed by a number of officials, each of which spoke on the benefits this merging of Ghirardelli, Disney, and Hollywood will bring.

P1090707.JPG

Marty Thompson, President and CEO of Ghirardelli's Chocolate Company...

P1090708.JPG

Dave Hollis, Executive Vice President of Theatrical Exhibition, Sales and Distribution...

IMG_2895.JPG

Tom LaBonge, Council District 4, Councilman...

P1090713.JPG

...and Central Area Representative from Mayor Garcetti's office, Kimberly Rodriguez.

In a blast of confetti, the ribbon was cut and the shop was open for business.

P1090715.JPG

Inside, there's been some re-arrangement of the retail and dining space, which Ghirardelli shares with Disney's Studio Store Hollywood.

P1090719.JPG

Ice cream orders are taken at the registers, and then brought to tables with a matching order number.

P1090725.JPG

While the film vault motif that earlier decorated the walls is gone, the ties to Tinseltown remain.

IMG_2901.JPG

Merchandise is now available both from Ghirardelli...

P1090723.JPG

And Disney, including the traditional pin releases and the items tying in with the currently-playing movie.

P1090724.JPG

P1090722.JPG

Despite the fact that they no longer routinely offer regular meal service, they will continue the character breakfasts and signature sundaes themed to the current film releases.

P1090726.JPG

Just as the combination of chocolate and Disney seems a natural, an afternoon spent with a movie at El Capitan and ice cream at Ghirardelli's can only be considered a winning combination.

P1090711.JPG

Ghirardelli's Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop is located at 6834 Hollywood Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90028. Hours are Sunday - Thursday: 9 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Friday - Saturday: 9 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.

Holidaytime at the Disneyland Resort

jeaninebanner.jpg

So now that Halloween is over, the Winter Holidays have taken over the Disneyland Resort with a vengeance.

Some season offerings have continued on from the last holiday...

P1090763.JPG

...and some are brand new for this year.

IMG_2929.JPG

Jingle Cruise is a new seasonal overlay for the Jungle Cruise attraction, in which the skippers bring a little holiday cheer to their tropical post. Consisting of new decorations in the queue and and some topical additions to the spiel, it's a nice change-up that refreshes the ride without completely altering its nature.

P1090747.JPG

Over in Fantasyland, the Tangled meet and greet has been changed over to Frozen, with Princess Anna and Queen Elsa holding court in a cottage decorated with an animatronic Olaf the Snowman perched on the roof.

Most of the brand new celebratory additions are over in Disney California Adventure, where Disney ¡Viva Navidad! is taking place for the first time at the Paradise Garden area of Paradise Pier. Celebrating the spirit of the Latino culture, it features meet and greets with the Three Caballeros; crafts and face painting; traditional music and menu items; and the high energy "Disney ¡Viva Navidad! Street Party," which takes place several times a day.

To best show the wide variety of holiday happenings around the resort, here's some video provided by Disney highlighting some of what's available:

With all the new things to see and do at the Disneyland Resort this season, it will surely be a cinch to turn any Scrooge to the holiday spirit! Be sure to catch all the festivities while they're here!
