AT&T U-verse puts live Disney network shows online and on mobile devices

Good news for Disney fans who subscribe to AT&T's U-verse services in their homes: The company announced this week that a set of new apps will allow viewers to watch Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Junior live on their iOS, Android, Xbox and Kindle Fire devices.

The new mobile streaming is available at no extra charge to customers who purchase cable packages that include the three Disney networks. Plus, on-demand content will be included with the service. "Phineas and Ferb" on the go? Yes, please! The ability to watch "Shake It Up" while waiting for an appointment or riding in the car? My kids, like many other Disney fans, will be thrilled.

The apps fall under the WATCH umbrella of products from AT&T, which recently launched the WatchESPN service. The new streaming apps -- called WATCH Disney Channel, WATCH Disney XD and WATCH Disney Junior -- are billed as "kid-friendly," though it's hard to image that most of today's children who grow up with technology will have difficulty operating any apps. Once the WATCH apps are downloaded, users will need to sign in to verify their U-verse accounts and then they'll be on their way to watching their favorite TV shows.

AT&T U-verse customers who prefer to watch the Disney programs online on their desktop computers can access the networks at, and

According to the Orlando Sentinel, AT&T's U-verse isn't the only provider to offer the Disney WATCH apps. Others include Comcast and Cox Communications. In addition, this week it was reported that Verizon FiOS TV subscribers will get access to Disney's WATCH apps soon, as well.

Disney Channel fans have a lot to look forward to with new seasons of "Good Luck, Charlie" and "A.N.T. Farm" poised to premiere; Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts coming in June; the original summer film, "Teen Beach Movie," scheduled for July; and new seasons ordered for "Austin & Ally" and "Jessie."

Disney Junior's Never Land Pirate Band performs free concerts at Disney World

Strolling through Pleasure Island last week with my children, I was reminded how much live music appeals to all ages. As we passed first a female singer on a restaurant's patio and then a male guitarist, my son asked to stop to listen -- even though he did not recognize the songs -- and my daughter started dancing down the sidewalk. The upbeat music definitely called to them.

And Downtown Disney is tailoring that appeal to the younger set with special performances by The Never Land Pirate Band, which includes Jake, Sharky and Bones from the popular Disney Junior show, "Jake and The Never Land Pirates." There's still time to check out one of these free concerts! Sunday, August 12, wraps up a 10-day gig for the band at Waterside Stage at The Marketplace.

The trio performs at 2, 3 and 5 p.m. daily. Guests are invited to dance and sing along to swashbuckling favorites, such as "Roll up the Map," "Castaway on Pirate Island" and "Talk Like a Pirate."

The Waterside Stage is home to daily performances by school groups and, during peak times, a DJ hosting kids' dance parties at night. It's an outdoor venue across from World of Disney that's rarely empty when performers are on stage and certainly adds a festive note to the shopping and dining district. (To find out about all the other inexpensive and fun things for kids to do at Downtown Disney, please read my previous blog.)

The Never Land Pirate Band made its debut at Walt Disney World last December when the guys rode on a float in the annual Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade and sang an original holiday song.

Not going to be in Orlando this weekend? Your children still can see Jake at two locations inside Disney's Hollywood Studios the next time you visit Walt Disney World. At the Hollywood & Vine restaurant, guests can join Disney Junior characters for breakfast or lunch and some singing and dancing. Characters make the rounds to each table. Reservations are recommended. Prices range from $15 to $35, depending on age, meal and time of year.

Jake and his pals also appear multiple times each day on stage during "Disney Junior -- Live on Stage!" This puppet show has several interactive elements for the audience, including bubbles, confetti, singing and dancing. When my children were younger, they couldn't get enough of this show. "Disney Junior -- Live on Stage!" performances are included in your theme-park admission. Characters from the show also do meet-and-greets outside the theater in Animation Courtyard.

Disney characters bring magic to your house with calls and postcards

What child wouldn't be thrilled to have a favorite Disney character call him or her? It's not impossible. In fact, Disney families have three choices for such calls and they're all free, courtesy of The Walt Disney Company.

Kids turning 2 to 7 years old can receive a birthday message from the title character in "Jake and The Never Land Pirates," Mickey Mouse or Minnie Mouse via phone and animated video. You can even request both greetings.

To sign up, Disney fans must register on and subscribe to the Disney Junior "It's Your Birthday!" mailing list. (If you're already a member, make sure you have opted to receive The Disney Junior offer.) Then, sit back and wait for your instructions. You'll receive an email about five weeks before your child's birthday with an invitation to schedule your call and/or video.

This offer is limited to United States residents. Calls are not available to area codes originating from WA, GA, KY, MS, NE, TN, ID and LA. For full details, go to the official Disney page.

If you have an older child, become a member of Disney Movie Rewards and you can surprise that special someone with a Disney Enchanted Call from his or her favorite character for any occasion. It's free to sign up on and easy to schedule the call. Enter code ENCHANTED CALL and then follow the online directions.

Enchanted Calls are open to residents of the United States and Canada, excluding Quebec and ID, WA, GA, KY, MS, NE, TN, and LA in the U.S. There is a limit of one call per member.

Finally, if you will be vacationing on a Disney Cruise Line ship, let Mickey or Goofy share the news. Once you have logged in to Disney Cruise Line's planning page, you can select the character and theme before being given the option to personalize the call. Simple instructions will be given to schedule the phone call.

Residents of the states of ID, WA, GA, KY, MS, NE, TN, and LA ARE eligible for this promotion, but they must use alternate instructions to retrieve their calls. Guests can schedule these calls up to a year in advance. There is a limit of two calls per reservation.

See full Disney Cruise Line details or leave a message for a Disney support operator at 800-404-5590.

Also, guests who stay at Disneyland or Walt Disney World properties can request wake-up calls from the characters.

The Walt Disney Company has so many ways to sprinkle Pixie Dust and here is yet another way they extend the magic to your home. Kids can write letters to their favorite characters, and they will receive autographed postcards in return. What a great way to encourage writing and the lost art of handwritten letters! Be sure to have your children explain why the characters are special to them. (Parents also can pen these notes, especially if their children are too young to write or they are planning a surprise gift.)

Send your letter to either of these addresses and allow up to eight weeks for delivery:
