Boardwalk Bakery Reopens

After an extensive refurbishment, the Boardwalk Bakery reopened today (April 26, 2013) – and I was impressed. But before I show you the great work the Imagineers did, I'll show you a few “before” pictures.

This first photo shows the old exterior. Notice there is only one door into this shop.

This next picture shows the small display case featuring the Boardwalk Bakery’s offerings.

Here we see the pay station which sat directly next to the display case. This was a small and cramped area that did not accommodate more than a handful of people at any one time.

This final picture of the old Boardwalk Bakery is of the show-kitchen, which was relocated to make room for the upcoming improvements.

Now let’s take a look at the new and improved Boardwalk Bakery. As you can see from these next pictures, a second door has been added to the left side of the shop.

Outside the Boardwalk Bakery are two sandwich board signs, one in front of the old door and one in front of the new entrance.

When entering the new door on the left side of the shop, guests are treated to the greatly improved Boardwalk Bakery. Gone is the small display case and cramped quarters in which to pay. These have been replaced by a store-length display case and a large queue to keep guests organized.

The menu at the Boardwalk Bakery has also been revamped and improved. Besides the traditional breakfast rolls and muffins and the gooey desserts, upscale lunch and dinner options are now available. Take for instance, Quiche of the Day, Maine Lobster on a Roll, Oak Grilled Salmon, Herb Pork Loin, Spinach Salad, and Apple Mixed Greens just to name a few.

After making your selections, a spacious area with two cash registers is available for payment.

The original shop door located on the right of the Boardwalk Bakery takes guest directly into the condiment/fountain area. It is here that those with refillable mugs can get a refill while strolling the promenade.

There is no indoor seating at the Boardwalk Bakery, but plenty of tables can be found nearby outside.

Ask any cast member and they will tell you that it’s a great honor to be on the opening crew of a new attraction, shop, or restaurant. Take a look at the smiling faces I encountered at the Boardwalk Bakery today.

The Boardwalk Bakery has always been a busy spot in the morning. Many resort guests rely on this shop for their morning sugar and caffeine. Because of this, the Boardwalk Bakery was often crowded beyond belief as guests were preparing to go to Epcot or Disney's Hollywood Studios. Although I was not there in the early hours today to witness the improved service now offered, it is obvious that these expanded quarters will greatly speed things along for those wishing to grab a quick bite.

Jack -- My husband and I stayed at the Boardwalk last spring and our one complaint was the Bakery. It was difficult to get refills because the line was out the door and there weren't very many food options available. I am so glad that they decided to do this upgrade... it will certainly make a difference for anyone who stays there :)

Are there new "hot" breakfast items available?

Jack's Answer:

I was there at lunch so I could avoid the early morning crowds and get pictures with few or no people. The overhead, permanent menu signs only list lunch/dinner items. With the exception of soup, all items are served cold. I saw no indication that hot meals of any kind were available. But like I said, I was there at lunch, I can't say definitively that hot breakfasts aren't available -- but I doubt it.

We are headed to The Beach Club this summer. We would like to know if we can use the dining plan to purchase quick service lunch at the Boardwalk Bakery and also if we can refill our mugs from the Beach Club there as well. Thanks to anyone who can answer these questions for us.

Jack's Answer:

I know the Boardwalk Bakery was on the list of Disney Dining Plan restaurants before the refurbishment, so I would assume it still is.

Technically, you are only supposed to use your refillable mug at the resort you're staying at.

Hi Jack,

I missed you by 24 hrs. I stopped by on Thur. to see the workers putting the finishing touches on the outside. I had another obligation on Fri., so Thur. was the only day I could get down there.
I also was very impressed with the refurb. Can't wait to have dessert there next week!

My favorite part of your blogs are "before and afters". When something gets revamped I have a hard time recalling my mental "before" pictures. Well done! But I think the most important thing here is - what did you eat?!!

Does anyone remember those wonderful Cinnamon Yummies they use to sell there?
You had to get there early or they would be sold out by around 9:30. :(
Then they stopped making them for awhile "said the oven they used broke" and they couldn't make any till they got it fixed. Then they came back but no where as good as they were before. Was hoping the old Yummies would be back.

Hi Jack, Love the newly expanded space, thanks for the write up! One question, are items still made 'onsite' or did they totally move the production out of the bakery?

Jack's Answer:

Tim, when I cover something new, I try to anticipate questions I'll received from my readers. Unfortunately, I didn't not consider this question so I really don't have an answer for you. However, I could clearly see a kitchen behind the bakery. I have to assume that at least some of the items are made on-site.

Janis Hansen:

I am hoping their expanded menu is more gluten-free friendly. We stayed at the Boardwalk last spring, and there was nothing for my family to eat at the Bakery. It will make a difference as to whether we choose to stay at that resort again or not.

Jack's Comment:

I really don't know if more gluten-free items have been added to the Boardwalk Bakery. However, I do know that Disney is trying to be more aware of this need.

Jack,I was wondering when they would do something with the bakery.Over the years it was tough at times to get inside without being crunched.Can't wait for our 14th annual 4th of July trip to enjoy the great pastries,desserts and the lobster sounds good.

Look carefully at photo #11 (the one showing beverages, OJ, Water....) just above the case, you see a distinguished gentleman's face, that is Dave Venables the General Manager of the BoardWalk Resort.

Is there a reason it is Main Lobster rather than Maine Lobster?
I am looking forward to stopping in on my next trip, and maybe try the spinach salad.
I used to enjoy watching them make stuff in the show kitchen. One time a CM was making Tiramasu, which I love. I stood and watched a long time. She kept smiling, kind of embarassed it seemed. Apparently people only watch for a minute, so she was not used to such attention. She was across the room. I sure would have liked to know the step-by-step ingredients.

Looks like a great improvement. We stayed at the Yacht Club in April 2012 and really enjoyed the breakfast and coffee at Boardwalk Bakery but were only able to get breakfast there once because of the long queues.

On the subject of refillable mugs, we were told by a bakery staff member (without even asking) that we could refill our mugs there despite staying at the Yacht Club, which we did on another morning. This was pre-refurb of course so may have changed.

We were one of the first customers in. They had a breakfast bowl with eggs and a house made cheese sauce. I dont remember what else-sorry. My husband had a delicious biscuit with bacon and eggs. So, yes, there were limited hot items for breakfast. They were struggling to get things out at lunch when we went back, but that's to be expected on the opening day.

Wow Jack! The newly refurbished bakery looks awesome! I can't wait to try it out in July! I am soooooo excited! If on the dining plan, will it count as a counter service meal? That would only make sense...
