Columbia Harbour House

Columbia Harbour House

I’ve been putting off writing this blog for four years. The reason? I selfishly didn’t want to share with you what I consider to be one of the best kept secrets at Walt Disney World. But I’ve finally decided to let you in on a fabulous Magic Kingdom experience that is only enjoyed by a handful of people each day. And to those of you who already know this secret, I apologize for letting the cat out of the bag. But before I spill the beans, let me tell you a little about this counter service restaurant.

Columbia Harbour House is located primarily in Liberty Square; however, portions of the establishment and signage can be found in Fantasyland. The first three pictures were taken from the Liberty Square side. Notice the architecture is that of 1800’s New England. Pictures four and five were taken from within Fantasyland and have a Bavarian flavor. At one time, you could enter the restaurant from Fantasyland but this doorway was recently designated as “exit only” and everyone now must enter through the Liberty Square entrance.

Let’s start with the restaurant’s name. Although “Columbia” has many references in American history, it can be speculated that the Imagineers were referring to the sailing ship Columbia when choosing a moniker for this establishment. The Columbia was the first American vessel to circumnavigate the globe in 1787. The Columbia River, which divides much of Oregon and Washington, was named for this ship after it explored the mouth of the river.

On June 14, 1958, a replica of the Columbia opened at Disneyland. The Imagineers studied numerous historical records to create an accurate reproduction. I have always felt that the Columbia, not the Liberty Belle, should be anchored in Liberty Square as it is more fitting to this land than a paddle wheeler which did not exist in colonial America.

Sailing Ship Columbia at Disneyland

If you notice, “Harbour” is spelled with a “u.” This is the British way of spelling the word which would be accurate to the time period depicted in Liberty Square.

Much of early New England’s commerce revolved around the sea. Whaling was an important industry and this is reflected both inside and out of Columbia Harbour House. Hanging near the restaurant’s entrance is an anchor and nearby is a simple painting depicting the capture of a sperm whale.

Inside Columbia Harbour House this nautical theme is continued. A ship’s wheel greets guests and sailor’s knots and macramé can be found throughout the establishment. Sailors created macramé in their off hours while at sea and sold or bartered this handicraft while in port. They called the process "square knotting" after the knot they used most frequently.

Sailors also passed their idle time by carving pictures into the bones and teeth of marine mammals. Called scrimshaw, these works of art were likewise sold to local merchants while in port. Samples of their handicraft can be found in various locations around the restaurant.

Whale oil was an important commodity to early Americans. If you notice, all of the lighting within Columbia Harbour House is in the form of oil lamps (electrified for practical purposes).

A number of model ships can also be found in various nooks and crannies.

On the wall are a number of old maps. If you’re like me, these hold a special fascination and deserve more than just a passing glance. The layout of one map in particular has special appeal to Disney fans.

Numerous period-piece signs adorn the walls. To give you an idea of how detail oriented the Imagineers are, the signs reflect real persons from history. In the first sign we see the name Wm. T. Coleman. Coleman was the fourth United States Secretary of Transportation (March 7, 1975 to January 20, 1977) and the second African American to serve in the Cabinet. The second sign displays the name A.A. Low. Low was an American entrepreneur, businessman, trader and philanthropist who gained most of his fortune from the China trade, importing teas, porcelains, and silk, and building and operating a fleet of reputable clipper ships. The last picture displays a name that needs no explanation.

I am aware of two Disney connections at Columbia Harbour House. The first can be found in the music heard playing in the background. One of the songs “Whale of a Tale” is from the movie “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” The second connection also has to do with this film. One of the pictures hanging on the wall is a reproduction of a matte painting done by Disney Legend Peter Ellenshaw. It depicts San Francisco circa 1866, the port where Professor Aronnax, his assistant Conseil, and harpooner Ned Land join an expedition to search for a sea monster (the Nautilus). The first picture was taken from the movie, the second is the picture found in the restaurant. I won’t tell you where it’s located. I’ll let you discover this for yourself.

Compared to many of the other Magic Kingdom counter service restaurants, Columbia Harbour House is small. It only has four stations from which to place your order. During busier times, it can get crowded, but it’s never as hectic as its Tomorrowland or Frontierland counterparts. One method used to speed things along is a “single line” manned by cast members during busier times. All guests enter this single line first, then are directed to individual lines as they draw near the ordering stations. This helps alleviate that “I got in the wrong line… again” feeling.

When ordering your meal, be sure to take a look overhead. More nautical memorabilia and ship figureheads can be seen. Figureheads can be traced back as far as the Vikings, but their most notable appearance coincides with the galleons and clipper ships of the 16th to 18th century. The shape of the skylight above conveys the feeling of being below decks.

Being a seaport restaurant, Columbia Harbour House offers seafood and chicken meals. There is no beef to be found here. My favorite is the “Anchors Aweigh Sandwich.” This white-meat tuna sandwich is served on multigrain bread with lettuce and tomato and is served with chips. Fries are available for an upcharge. I also enjoy the BLT Salad. As the name implies, lettuce and tomatoes are sprinkled with bacon bits and topped with chicken nuggets. Although several dressings are available, I prefer to use the honey-mustard dressing found in a dispenser. My other recommendation is the New England Clam Chowder. It’s the same recipe as can be found at the nearby Liberty Tree Tavern. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. To see the complete Columbia Harbour House menu, click here.

Seating at Columbia Harbour House is scattered among numerous small rooms rather than one large communal hall. This adds an intimacy to the dining experience that I really appreciate.

Columbia Harbour House also offers second floor seating. So if you can’t find an empty table downstairs, look for one of the two staircases and check out the rest of the restaurant. There are condiment stations and restrooms on both floors.

Okay, now it’s time to divulge my secret.

To create a better transition between Fantasyland and Liberty Square, the Imagineers built a “bridge” over the delineator.

Fantasyland Bridge

Liberty Square Bridge

Inside this bridge is additional seating for Columbia Harbour House. The room looks like the interior of a ship. On one side of the room are two tables that look out onto Liberty Square. On the other side are three tables that look out onto Fantasyland. In my opinion, this is the very best spot in the Magic Kingdom to enjoy a counter service meal.

Special Room

View of Liberty Square

View of Fantasyland

I have been known to spend an hour or more at one of these tables eating my lunch or dinner and people-watching. It’s amazing, but most guests rarely look up. This allows me to stare at them to my heart’s content. I promise you, if you can secure one of these tables, you’re in for a treat and you’ll be reluctant to rejoin the throngs of people outside when you’re done eating. However, there is a price to pay now that I’ve given away my secret. If you ever see me enter this room holding a tray, you MUST invite me to join you.

Columbia Harbour House is my favorite counter service restaurant at Walt Disney World. The reason? The atmosphere. Although the food is more than adequate, I enjoy the ease in which I’m able to secure my meal and the intimate atmosphere offered no matter where I sit. If you haven’t already tried this spot, be sure to stop by on your next trip.

Another great blog!

We 'discovered' Columbia Harbour House in 2004 and have been going back ever since. We too love the place and how quiet it can actually be at busy times.

I have a very close friend who lives in the town where George Washington's ancestors lived. There are cluster of little villages attached to the town. The one my friend lives in is Columbia, I think they were all Pit Villages due to the coal mining of yesterday.

I don't mind that you've given away the 'secret' as if it's under used it might go away.

Thanks Jack

Wendy Crober:

Hi Jack,

This is our favourite counter service restaurant at Magic Kingdom (Lighthouse Sandwich for me!) and it is in our top 5 for sure in all of Disney World. As you say it's not only the food but the entire package that draws you in.

Thanks for all the history.

Wendy

Emma, Surrey England:

really enjoyed this article Jack.. one of my favourite counter service restaurants in WDW; I last ate here during a Keys to the Kingdom tour - we got to sit upstairs too.

:)

Becky:

Columbia Harbour House is a favorite of ours. I do wish they still had Monte Carlo sandwiches because they were to die for. LOL! I suppose with a new emphasis on healthy eating those were the first thing to go, but even with that, they were worth a once per trip splurge.

Di Berry:

Absolutely fascinating - very many thanks, as always. I think we've only eaten here a couple of times in all our trips but I definitely want to try those tables on the "bridge" - I'll look out for you!!!

Erin Rix:

Wonderful to hear more about this great place!
It's also my favorite place to enjoy a counter meal in Magic Kingdom and I always try to sit in the bridge area overlooking Liberty Square eating my favorite-Anchors Aweigh! Maybe sometime I will find you there :)

David W:

Great article Jack. Unfortunately, you've given away one of the secrets my daughter and I have had for several years now. We always eat at Columbia Harbour House when we visit Magic Kingdom. In fact, we've actually eaten there for lunch and dinner on a couple of occasions. We always have this restaurant on our "must-do" list when we visit Magic Kingdom.

This place is always a great spot to decompress after facing the crowds and long lines. This past December, we visited Magic Kingdom with a group of friends and their children. We took them to CHH and they couldn't get over how tranquil the upstairs area was. They had taken their kids to Disney several times and didn't know this restaurant existed.

Definitely an overlooked experience by many visitors to Magic Kingdom. Although I suspect your blog could change that somewhat.

Josh:

hey jack
the columbia harbour house is my favorite small resturant in the magic kingdom. the atmosphere is amazing and the food is good as well. I always stop there for a bite to eat whenever i visit. thanks for the secret. I will definetly invite you to sit with us if i see you up there. can't wait for your next blog and as always keep up the great work.

Laura Blume:

We just discovered CHH on our last trip, back in '09. We liked it so well we ate lunch there 3 times that week! We loved the quiet atmosphere of the upstairs. I am always amazed by the detail that the Imagineers put into everything. Most people are in such a rush, they just don't take the time to absorb their surroundings. Can't wait to visit CHH on our upcoming May trip! Thanks, Jack!!

Matt from GA:

Disney always surprises me with their attention to detail and your blogs are just as, if not, more detailed. My wife and I almost ate at Columbia back in December of 2010 but, she wasn't in the mood for a "seafood" restaurant. We decided to eat at the Pinocchio Village Haus where we took full advantage of the balcony seating, which I think I remember you mentioning in another one of your blogs. ;)

Sometimes, I wish I was a Orlando resident and could make it to the parks more often to check out all these cool spots!

Great job as always!

Dale Knight:

Hi Jack! Great blog as always :-)

My partner and I always grab a table in the exact room you described overlooking Liberty Square. We love people watching too, and that is a great spot to watch people debate going to the Haunted Mansion.

Tom Zamorski:

Jack, This has always been a favorite place to eat and relax for me and my family - it always seems to be half full and yes, the bridge tables are some of the best in the Magic Kingdom!

I'll let you slide on telling the world about it.

As always, thanks for your blogs.

Greg Highfill:

Hi Jack,

I’m mortified that you’ve given away “the secret!” Seriously though, I share your feelings about The Columbia Harbour House being my favorite counter service restaurant at Magic Kingdom.

I discovered New England clam chowder at Disneyland in the late 60s, as a teen, and I swear that the chowder at Columbia Harbour House is the exact recipe used at Disneyland, so when ever I stop there, it also takes me back to those wonderful Southern California days at Disneyland in the 60s & 70s.

Usually, I’m hungry when I arrive so I get my food and eat straight away. When I’m finished people watching from the bridge, I enjoy examining all the details that abound in the warm interior. This is what I love so much about Disney, they so often put in so many interesting details, especially in the “good old days.”

Greg

Jenny Sperandeo:

Hi Jack! My family has been coming here for years. The food is great, as well as the look and feel of the restaurant. I really feel removed from the MK when I eat here. It's usually quieter upstairs, where we choose to eat every time. We have looked over fantasyland and Liberty Square. Both offer excellent views of the park. I too recommend the BLT Salad. Yummy!

Columbia Harbor House is on our must eat list every trip to MK. We eat there at least once during each trip, and more often than not, upstairs.

I don't recall ever eating on the " bridge" though...definitely on my list now!

Thx for another great article.

Regina :

Hey Jack -
I tried Columbia Harbour House on my last trip for the first time. I also had the Anchor's Aweigh Sanwich and it was soooo good!! It was a little crowded and we had to eat outside, but it was well worth the wait and I will definitely eat there again. I will also try the second level, especially on the "bridge"! I guess the "secrets out of the bag" now!!!

Lynn Smith:

My son and I enjoyed a meal here on February 4, 2011 (my son's 14th birthday). Before ordering our meals, we were invited to sit in the "Captain's Quarters". We ordered and paid for our meal, were escorted upstairs to a roped off section of tables, and our food, drinks, and condiments were delivered to us by the CMs. It made for an extra special day, and definitely made this our favourite restaurant. Now we will always make a point to eat here during our WDW visits.

I have to join you in saying that this is my favorite Counter service in The Magic Kingdom, and possibly in all of WDW. I look forward to both the Anchors Aweigh Tuna Sandwich and the Clam Chowder. Haven't made it upstairs yet, but that will be NEXT for sure! Thanks for a great article!

Don:

Hi Jack,

Thanks for another fantastic blog entry!!

I first started visiting the Columbia Harbour House as a child with my parents back in the mid 1970's. Since then, I have continued the tradition with my own family and we make it a point to eat there at least once during our annual visit to the Magic Kingdom. Last year we were elated to find that the restaurant had added shrimp back to the menu (back in the 1970's there were several seafood items to choose from) again! The Columbia Harbour House will always be special to us!!

Stephanie:

Hey Jack,

This has always been one of my family's favorite places to eat at in the MK. There is one thing I miss - they used to serve the clam chowder in bread bowls instead of regular bowls. It was so good!! Do you know why they stopped doing that? I am sure it was one of their best sellers; I always ordered it when I was there. Thanks again for a great article!!

Jack's Answer:

Disney is always tinkering with menus to keep the offerings fresh. But I'm with you, they should have NOT discontinued the bread bowl.

Merrie Tesh:

Oh Jack how could you! Why oh why did you! You have really done it now! Just kidding. I suspect that most of your readers know about this little jem! I really love CHH. I also like many, always eat upstairs and score a window seat to people watch! It never ceases to amaze me how many people hurry by to get to the next ride and how many parents are trying to comfort tired children and also urge them to keep going while im relaxing upstairs in the air conditioning. This to me is also the best counter service in all of WDW because of this reason. Thank You for all of your wonderful blogs! And keep them coming!

Rebecca:

I love this restaurant! I have eaten here since I was a kid. We also think it is a best kept secret. The employees are so friendly here and will chat with you. The last time we ate here the lady who gave us our meals gave my daughter an extra cookie and she was thrilled. My favorite meal is also the tuna sandwich. The menu items here are just a little bit different than other counter service restaurants in MK. Thanks Jack!

Ashley:

Jack - weve gone "Deluxe" on the dining plan for 3 years, and weve missed these counter service gems. My co-worker first told me about CHH last October and said it was the best food they had on their trip.

We will be eating lunch here on May 30th, and we will defnitely sit in the secret overlook!

Looking forward to your next blog!

Deb:

Having been to the Magic Kingdom at least 20 times we found ourselves dining at this fine establishment for the first time last May. It is now a must do on our trips. Until your post I was unaware of the upstairs section. That has now gone on the list for our trip in September.

Tim:

Eating on "the bridge" is one of our traditions for any trip to the Magic Kingdom. The first time we walked upstairs and saw that room we knew immediately that we had to sit there. The people-watching is indeed first-rate here. And you get the thrill of actually being in the upstairs of Magic Kingdom building, a rather rare thing when you really think about it.

I'm hopeful that the upcoming work around western Fantasyland (demolition of the Skyway building, new restrooms, etc.) won't impact Columbia Harbour House and especially the bridge. The plans suggest that the underpass will remain. We'll have to wait and see.

Debbie:

Oh no! The secret is now out! The CHH has been one of my favorites since my first trip in 1975. Now my hubby and I stop there at least once every trip to reminisce where our kids learned to appreciate the memorabilia. We love that it is usually quiet and we love the bridge - especially around parade time in the afternoon.

Kelly:

CHH is our favorite counter service location at the Magic Kingdom, and we love the window seats upstairs! I still miss the Garden Galley Salad that used to be on the menu, but overall the menu offers some refreshing options that other places do not have. We eat here at least one time on each trip.

Corey:

Another great post Jack! We've been eating here for years, back when my Grandmother was alive this was her favorite place, so it holds a special place in our heart.

Just a little FYI for the Mom's out there. The restroom upstairs does not have a changing table. I found this out the hard way after lugging the baby and the bag up the stairs. I had to go out of the restaurant (but I don't remember which one) to find the changing table.

DoctorK:

Nooooooooo! You've given away my secret too! ;)

We've found that "bridge" seating to be a quiet little place, and the food choices offer something a little lighter than the burgers we usually have for lunch.

Plus, CHH was where my daughter discovered her love for fish fry. Actually, for MY fish fry, leaving me with her chicken nuggets.

Nanette J:

Hi Jack,

Thanks again for another superb blog. I first visited the CHH a few years ago as part of a tour and I couldn't believe it took me that long to 'discover' it. Since then, my sister and I make it a sort of tradition to go there each trip (eating upstairs as always!). A few trips back, we took the rest of the family there after they were disgruntled by some signature dining restaurants. They loved it! I will be sure to invite you to our table as I'm always looking out for you anyway :-)

Sue Van Vleet:

Noooooo! That's my room. Just kidding. Last time we ate there I showed that area to my parents, who accidentally picked an upstairs table elsewhere, and asked them to always get a table there if possible (while I get the food). I never realized it was the 'bridge' though! Back in the 70s CHH was the only restaurant we ever ate at and it was a huge treat. It is still our favorite MK restaurant.

Julie:

Well, our secret is out. My husband and I haven't missed Columbia Harbour House on any of our trips since 1994. You even gave away our seating preference. The walkway seating is the best anywhere in the World. Hopefully, we can still stake out a table! Thanks for such a great article!

Maja K:

Well, the secret is out. This is definitely one of our favorite counter service places in all of WDW. We eat there multiple times on each trip! Anchors Aweigh Tuna Sandwich is such a nice divergence from burgers and pizza. Love that place!

Michael:

We love this place!!! Two years ago my daughter (then 2)fell asleep in the bridge while eating her chicken nuggets. I stayed with her and people watched for a few hours. Great place to get away, but still be entertained.

Marissa:

Jack,
What a wonderful article. My mother and I plan our Disney trips around tuna sandwiches and people watching at Harbour House - it truly is a little gem. We too sit at the little tables upstairs by the window that overlook the entrance to Fantasyland. Its almost unreal how quiet and peaceful it is up there in the center of a bustling amusement park. I was astonished to find out that there are other Disney fans out there who engage in the same silly , mundane activity in a gigantic theme park full of attractions! Loved this article!

christine:

Jack,
We have eaten at CHH many times and this past summer was the first time we ate upstairs on the "bridge". What a great view!! This is one of our family's favorite restaurants. The BLT salad is a hit with our daughters. I must admit that I have never looked up to see the window. I will definitely have to check that out when we go back next year!
Thanks for another great blog, but shame on you for revealing our secret! If we see you there, we'd be glad to enjoy your company :)

Jen:

We love the BLT salad as my 6 year old daughter and I can share it...she eats the chicken nuggets, and I eat the salad!

But seriously....to give away "my" secret spot? I suspect it will be busier up there now!!!

Ann:

Hey Jack,
Thanks for 'spilling' the beans about my favorite MK counter service restaurant!! I'm a fussy New England seafood eater and I 'love' the shrimp plate there! The best of any place I've eaten in Florida! Great blog, nice pics!

sue and jerry ziolkowski:

Hi Jack!

What a wonderful blog on this gem in the Magic Kingdom! We finally got to eat here on our last trip this past December, and boy was it great! We ate after what we deemed lunch hours and the place was pretty much empty, a few stragglers after we sat down, we were able to get a table upstairs and look out over the areas, what a great view, we were able to spend some time looking at all the pics and ships and really be able to enjoy our lunch! We were on the quick service dining plan and this was certainly worth every credit we spent! We had the shrimp and the kids had the nuggets, portions were extremely ample! I had the apple pie dessert and it was great! We are planning on coming back for Thanksgiving this year and can't wait to eat here again! I think we will try and eat here at least twice!

cathy m.:

Oh boy Jack, now this favorite restaurant will be packed every time we visit!

This is the best counter service restaurant at DW and we discovered Columbia on our first DW trip back in the 80's. Back then mamy people didn't know about upstairs so many times we had private dining. I didn't know about the bridge though so now I will have to check out this beautiful spot on our next trip and you are always welcome to join us!

Have a magical day!

Lorie:

We love the Columbia Harbour House also - the food is good, it has so much personality and, even when busy, it feels cozy. Ah, what I wouldn't give for an Anchors Aweigh sandwich right now! ;-)

AJ:

Hey Jack,
My husband does not care for seafood, but because he knows I love the tuna sandwich, he and I almost always make it to CHH. I get tuna, he gets chicken nuggets, and we're both happy. I could be mistaken, but I believe that CHH is the only place inside of Magic Kingdom park that you CAN get tuna fish. I know you can get a tuna sandwich at the value resorts, but the recipe isn't the same. I think the CHH sandwich is much better. We always sit upstairs, but we've never sat on the bridge. When we go back in April, we'll have to sit there. Thanks for a great post!
AJ

Sarah:

Another great blog, of course!

I, too, absolutely love sitting in that spot. When we were doing research for the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, my husband and I would meet up at Columbia Harbour House when we were done for the day. We would enjoy a great meal (I loved the hummus sandwich; I think it was called the Lighthouse Sandwich). We would sit up there for at least an hour watching people. It was so peaceful. I hated going back outside to the oppressive heat and annoying crowds.

john:

We just got back from WDW this past week, and after 4 trips had never tried the CHH. We did this time, AND sat on the bridge, WE LOVED IT!! I hope this CS rest. stays a part of WDW for a very long time!

Carol Sutton:

Hi, Jack! Thank you for your updates and info on The Columbia Harbour House. My favorite counter service to dine in at teh MK. Love this place, and it is one of the best kept secrets in the MK. Your photos and your blog were great!

Andrea S.:

Hi Jack,

Another great blog. Columbia Harbor House is one of our favorite counter service restaurants in all of Walt Disney World. We love the atmosphere and the food. When dining there, we never look for a table downstairs, but instead you can always find us upstairs, however, we may have to scope out a table in "your" spot sometime :), don't worry if you happen to come along while we are there, we would be very happy to have you sit with us. Answer me this, we have noticed the last time that we ate up there, there was a circular table roped off, is that for a VIP or something? We were trying our hardest to figure that one out. Thanks

Jack's Answer:

I know the roped off section on the second floor is for tour groups. But I don't know why this one particular table is roped off. I'm guessing it is used occasionally to single out a family and make them feel special. Readers, does anyone know???

Liz Hanson:

Oh Jack, you've done it now...you've let everyone in on our "secret". But after reading all the other comments, I think The Columbia Harbour House is everyone's "secret" retreat. It truly offers a one of a kind, battery charging, cat bird seat kind of dinning experience. It's a must go place for me and my family every time we visit the Magic Kingdom. Hmm...I can smell the clam chowder now. Yo-Ho!

Mindy Woon:

Dear Jack,

That's one of our favorite places to eat and we always go there to have a meal. We especially like the fish and chips and the clam chowder. Sometimes we get the baked potato (another great food find) and a turkey leg from the outside vendors, come inside the restaurant and have our own little mini Thanksgiving fast food meal. It's a nice alternative if you couldn't get into the Liberty Tree Tavern. We have never eaten in that little overpass even though I knew there was seating up there but you have made it sound so inviting that we must experience for ourselves next time.

Thank you,
Mindy

Dan:

Great job, Jack. My family actually ate lunch two days in a row at Columbia Harbour House on our Disney trip in February. We love the second floor, as it was nearly empty, which was great for eating with our young toddler. I didn't know about your secret, though. I'm totally checking that out the next time we go to the World. We actually should have visited three times. We battled the crowds at Cosmic Ray's at another meal, and that was not so fun. Thanks for the great blog!

Clare C.:

Jack,

I've always loved the peaceful upstairs dining at CCH. Thanks for all of the pics of little decor details that I've missed over the past 20 years...

Brad:

The Columbia Harbour House is a must go to place every time I am at WDW. The tables at the bridge has been my favorite. The first floor will be very crowded but the second floor will not be. May not be anymore, but it is a nice quiet place with good food. Thanks, Jack

Kristin W:

We love the Columbia Harbour House. It is our favorite counter service restaurant in Magic Kingdom. In all the times that we have gone, we have never eaten upstairs. After reading your blog we are going to make sure that the next time we are there we go upstairs in sit on the bridge. The view looks awesome and we can't wait to people watch.

Thanks so much for your blogs. We always look forward to reading them. Your pictures, history and your attention to detail is just awesome!

Arel Family:

We totally get your hesitation to share this gem. Our family has eaten at CHH every year for the past 7 years and will again this year. It is wonderfully themed and has very good food for counter service. The only negative we have is the French fries. A few years ago they changed from a delicious medium thickness fry to a rather poor tasting fry.

B Jackson:

Ahhh.. that's our expression upon entering CHH on a hot summer day in MK. the crisp AC that meets you inside the door, the anchors aweigh sammich, and a quaint window seat on the bridge to rest our weary park legs. CHH is our hiding place, in our home away (aweigh?) from home.

as always, great article. Thank you

Hermes:

Next time I go to Columbia, if I can’t find a seat I’m going to blame you! Kidding aside, great blog and great photos. CCH is my favorite at MK, sometimes I just go to eat the BLT salad (with Ranch dressing) and people watch from the bridge.

Have you noticed that the marches are back as the Liberty Square soundtrack, hate it. Love the remodel of what use to be El Pirata y el Perico, they did a great job, specially in the “condiment bar” room.

David L:

Great blog Jack. Our family makes a point of going to CCH every time we visit. It's a calm, air-conditioned retreat from the crowds that is unmatched for us. The food is good too, and different from the usual counter-service menu. The window-view seats on the second floor are tops for Disney atmosphere, we had a great view on our last trip.

scott:

Jack,

Another great blog entry. We love Columbia Harbour House. This blog just makes us excited for our family to be going as a 10 person Grand Gathering next week. But we will heed your rule and invite you over if we see you there for lunch.

Scott

NT3:

Love Columbia Harbour House too! And don't worry Jack, from the looks of all the comments most of us here knew "the secret" already!

Gotta say one thing though...CHH is sort of on my bad list right now. They took the Starboard Deck sandwich off the menu, long a favorite of mine. It was ham, cheese, tomato, and broccoli slaw and was delicious. Used to love getting the half of sandwich and clam chowder. But I had the BLT salad and it was pretty good. May have to try the tuna sandwich next time.

Still kind of peeved about no more Starboard Deck, though.

Carrie:

Dear Jack,
I have been visiting WDW since 1976 (when I was only 5 yrs.old!) and have eaten at the Harbour House at least once every trip but I NEVER new about the seating above the walkway!! Boy do I feel dumb!! We were just there the first week in December with my kids and they wanted to go upstairs but I was tired from all the walking and we stayed on the first floor.....I really wish we had ventured up the stairs now!!! I know for our next trip we will definately climb the stairs!! Thanks for another great article,
Carrie

Brad:

CHH also has a dedicated room on the first floor for disabled parties travelling with wheelchairs. So unlike other restaurants you don't have to figure out how to get your wheelchair between tables, chairs & strollers in order to find a vacant table. This is a real plus to CHH that puts it at the top of our list.

Michelle:

I love their hummus sandwich (and I'm not even Vegetarian)! I didn't know about the bridge seating though, so thanks for sharing your "secret" and we'll try it out next time we go.

Mukta:

Columbia Harbour House is a great counter service choice for vegetarians. It offers so much more than the veggie burgers found elsewhere in the park. I love how peaceful the upstairs is. Thank you for another great article.

Beth in MI:

Love the Columbia Harbor House. My daughter is a picky eater but she loves the clam chowder. I like the fish and chips and the Anchor Aweigh sandwhich. I love the peace and quiet after all the running around from ride to ride. My Dad has never eaten here so on our next trip we are going to treat him to the CHH experience. I did not know about the upstairs and can't wait to explore. We will be looking for you!

Johnny:

Hey Jack!

You sure did let the cat out of the bag!
We have been dining in "The Bridge" since 1998. It's one of the only two places we'll sit when we eat at CHH. The other spot is a table in a secluded area at a window overlooking one of the most tranquil and peaceful scenes in all the Magic kingdom. There are shade trees right close to the building to give you that cozy, "tucked-in" feeling and the most perfectly framed view of the Riverboats coming in to dock. It is absolutely our favorite place to dine in all of Disney World.

Thanks again for the outstanding blog. ~ Johnny.

Michelle:

I can't wait to try this. My daughter is a huge lover of all things fish, so she will really enjoy their food. Thanks for the info.I have been coming to WDW for 20+ years, and in all that time I don't think I have ever eaten there.

Gary:

By sheer happenstance, Jack, my wife and I visited the Columbia Harbour House for the first time several years ago and were seated in your "secret" area. We both agreed that there was something very special about that room, its ambiance and intimacy (hey, the chicken and fish strips were great, too!). Every time we walk under those windows, with each subsequent visit, we have remarked about what a great lunch we had in such a quaint setting. Thanks for reminding us!

Ron Stalsberg Jr:

Columbia Harbour House is the best cs by far in the Magic Kingdom. We eat there at least once on every trip. I love the fact that you can take your food upstairs where it is much less crowded.

Mad Capn Bob:

I had the chance to eat at the Columbia Harbour House a couple years ago...got the shrimp. I will be doing so again this year (gonna visit MK on my Carnival Cruise shore excursion). One thing not mentioned is that much of the background music are shanties. Unfortunately, I know some of them...and could not help but to belt some out while I was eating. Luckily, the place was not crowded at that time of day (around 11 am, I mind me...)

Jack,
When I saw that your post was about Columbia Harbour House, my first thought was, "What a great topic for a post." My second thought was, "I hope he doesn't talk about the 'bridge!'" Oh well, the secret was bound to come out at some point. Seriously, though, I love CHH exactly because of that "bridge" room. We eat there every visit, making sure to snag a table by the window. The Imagineers excel at creating intimate nooks like that in their parks. It doesn't matter that they're located in the biggest tourist attraction in the world. There's something about how they're tucked away from the rest of the World that makes them feel like your own special and secret hiding place.

Jennifer:

CHH is my favorite, too. I am sad they got rid of the thicker/steak cut style French fries for the regular Disney kind you can get anywhere else. That was another thing that made this place so special. Oh well! I still stop in here, usually more than once, every trip! :)

Shelley:

Hey Jack! My husband and I always enjoy your posts and this one has definitely hit a soft spot. CHH has always been our favorite MK counter service ever since we stumbled across it by accident over 20 years ago. That being said, we had NO IDEA there was seating in the bridge area. We have eaten upstairs lots of times and have never noticed it. Is it possible it is not open during the off season (January) when we usually go? Are the doors usually open or closed? What do they look like? We were just there and are kicking ourselves for missing out...now we have to wait until next year to experience 'the bridge'.

Jack's Answer: If the upstairs is open, so is the bridge room. You just missed it.

Haha! Your secret is one of our "must dos" for each trip. In fact, on our most recent trip, we arrived at the resort about normal check in time, and so we paid the extra few dollars for an extra day on our tickets and went to the Magic Kingdom for dinner. And where do you think we chose for that special first day (also our anniversary trip)? That's right- overlooking Fantasyland from Columbia Harbour House. We giggled like little kids that there was no competition for the tables, though a few people seated in the corner of the room looked at us as though we were insane. Are you kidding? They were in the best room in the Kingdom and thought we were insane for enjoying the view? :-D

Tom S:

The first time I dined at Columbia Harbour House was during a Keys To The Kingdom tour in 2009. Since that visit my wife and I have dined there at least once on each visit to WDW. My wife is gluten intolerant and found the gluten-free menu items to be excellent in taste and quality. This counter service eatery is unusually non-busy for some unexplained reason, and the facility is very well maintained. Cleanliness is always noted. The second floor seating takes you away from the noise and hubbub of the "world". It is no wonder that it is chosen for guests of the Keys To The Kingdom tour.
Tom S. Norwood, Massachusetts

Kevin:

Great Post. I couldn't agree with you more on the "Greatness" of CHH. This is one of our stops on every trip the the Kingdom. WE usually try to stop at an odd time of the day to miss the crowd and most of the time we have the upstairs to ourselves. The kids feel like the whole restaurant is thiers and have the ablity to eat and explore, gving the my wife and I a chance to relax and enjoy or meal. For visitors that have never been to CHH, it's a true Magic Kindom experience and almost an attraction within itself with all of the decor and homey feel.Kudos on the bridge dining area. I didn't know it existed.

Jennifer:

I love CHH. Whenever my family and I go to Magic Kingdom, we must have lunch on the second floor on the bridge. It's a nice little get-away from the hustle and bustle, and the food is excellent. Thank you (I think) for pointing out this often overlooked experience.

Melissa:

I've noticed this place before, but never taken the time to go in. Now it's on my must-do list for my June trip! Thanks, Jack!

Pablo:

Columbia Harbor House - FOR THE WIN. the Lighthouse Sandwich is the best Counter Service Item in all of WDW to me . I have crossed the entire park just to get my Lighthouse . But to agree with others , DISNEY bring back the bread bowl Chowdah!

Tracy:

Love, love, love this place. Atmosphere and location are great, and the food choices offer something different than the normal park fare. We make sure to stop in on each visit. I MUST have my Lighthouse sandwich!!

Maria:

OOOO Jack, what have you done?

The CHH is my favorite place to eat in Magic Kingdom, I love the atmosphere and the food options. I always felt the food options were lacking compared to the other parks and resorts. It always seemed like burgers at Tomorrowland or pizza in Fantasy Land, this all changed when I walked into the wrong location. Now I go there every time. I have dreams of the Lighthouse Sandwich, and crave the broccoli slaw. I take everyone there and make them swear to me that they do not shout it from the rooftops. I love the bridge above the trail and enjoy watching people transition from one world to the next.
And yes, I will save a seat for you if I see you holding a tray looking puppy-eyed into the crowd.

Laura S. :

This is a favorite stop for lunch for my family. It has more healthy options than some of other counter services areas, but can get REALLY crowded. Love the upstairs for the quiet.
Love the blogs. We have 156 days to go!

Jen:

Hi Jack,

Count us in on the list of people that LOVE CHH!!! It's the best counter service place in MK! I've been going there since I was a kid in the 80's. (And my great-aunt used to work there during that time, so it has that special connection for me too.)

But also count me to the list of CHH regulars who didn't know about the bridge! I've eaten countless times there - and on the second floor no less! How did I miss it?

Well, we'll definitely be checking it out on our next trip this June!

David:

We eat lunch or dinner at CHH everytime we are in the magic kingdom. Some trips we even make a special stop at the magic kingdom just to eat there. Love the tuna, best sandwich ever,

Meagan:

Love the Columbia Harbour House. Their chili is so yum and there's always plenty of seating :)

Karen Martin:

Hi Jack-

I love the Harbour House and I agree it is one of Disney's best kept secret! I have been going to Disney every year for the past 16 years but just noticed the Harbour House the year before last! I guess it's very easy to miss because it is right at the bridge in between the two park sections. So naturally, most people wouldn't look for it to be there and they are just trying to get through to the other side of the park. And when I went there for the first time I kept saying..."OMG-where have I been all these years!" LOL! What I loved about it is that it is the only counter service that I've seen to serve fried shrimp and one of the few places of all the restaurants, counter service or table service, to serve fried shrimp at all! And the warm apple crisp-delicious!!! I used to think Cosmic Ray's was the best counter service, but since I found Harbour House I make it an appoint to visit both places every time I'm in Magic Kingdom! And thanks for the secret about the seating area over the bridge! Definately will be looking to do that on this year's trip!

Meaghan S.:

This is my family's favorite place for lunch in the MK! Great food, and the atmosphere is wonderful. I always get the fish and chips, and they're always great. Ate here during our Keys to the Kingdom Tour, and it was just fantastic; no complaints. Love to get a table overlooking Liberty Square and/or the Haunted Mansion. And there's a tip right there: while waiting for your Fastpass time for HM or one of the Fantasyland rides, you can eat lunch here, spending a good hour soaking up the atmosphere and people-watching. Highly recommend this counter-service to anyone who'll listen; it's my favorite in all of WDW!

Jack's Comment:

You're correct. The CHH is a great place to wait for your FastPass to come due. But alas, Disney did away with Haunted Mansion FastPasses some time ago.

tracy borden:

Huh, so that's that "bridge" is. You know I have gone under it many many times, and you're right, I never looked up! I will make a point of doing that from now on and wave!! Thanks Jack, we may just have to try this new hideout of yours when we visit in May!

Joe:

Jack,Great blog on the Columbia Harbour House. It really is a great place to eat and watch the "world" pass by below you (if you sit upstairs).

Kim Gattis:

Oh no! You gave away the secret to our favorite spot. Like you, one of our favorite things to do is order the Anchors Aweigh and sit up by the windows in the bridge to peope watch. Our best experience was Marathon weekend in 2010. It was so much fun to see what people were wearing to stay warm!

Robert Dickinson:

Hey Jack,

Awesome blog as always!! I had no clue the "bridge" you walk under to go between Liberty Square and Fantasyland was part of the Columbia Harbour House. Nor did I know that it was decorated like the bowels of a ship inside. Will definitely put this on the list of must sees on my next visit!!!
Columbia Harbour House has always been one of my all time favorites since my first trip to the World. Being such a huge nautical buff and tiring of Burgers, Columbia Harbour House is an excellent refuge. Love the decor. I liken it to Disney's version of Long John Silvers (but only better)!
Thank you for the History too. I sailed on the Columbia/Snake river years ago while working for a small Cruise Line in the Pacific Northwest. Very cool to realize the connection. Thanks again Jack!! You Rock!!

Kevin Morgan:

Hi Jack,

Great review! We love Columbia Harbor House, and it is a must do on every trip. So sad that you let the "secret" out, but we forgive you! We love to sit and watch the people while enjoying our lunch. Say, did you know that there is another secret you did not mention? In colonial times, there was no indoor plumbing, and hence, no indoor restrooms. The Imagineers wanted to stay true to this detail also, so the restrooms are actually located in Adventureland!! Keep the reviews coming!

Jack's Comment:

Your comment about the restrooms is only partially true. There are no "general" restrooms in Liberty Square, but CHH and Liberty Tree Tavern have restrooms.

dusty cheatham:

wow jack !! dont know how i have never noticed the scrinshaws. missed it big time. have to diagree some what on the quality . seems to be sliping in the last year or so .but sadly you could say that about a lot of the eating establishments on disney property. i also enjoy the tuna as well .my best to you

dusty

Laurie Walker:

Jack, now you have done it...you let the secret out! CHH is our family's favorite CS at WDW! We even have a special table we sit at every time we eat there. It is the corner table on the 2nd floor. (It is included in your pics you posted.) Eating here is a family tradition. It is a must-do on every trip. Thanks for a great article! You are making it very hard for me not to go book a trip right now!...I am trying to wait until all the Fantasyland attractions are completed, but now that yummy tuna sandwich is calling my name!

Robert Youngblood:

Great review/story. I "discovered" CHH on the backstage tour at MK. This was the place we had lunch on the tour. At the beginning of the tour we selected what we wanted for lunch. We sat upstairs at a large table and our meals were delivered by CMs. I have enjoyed it ever since. Thanks for the info.

Robert

mike Keith:

Well Jack - talk about hitting the spot ! over the 20 years we have been visiting WDW , CHH remains a must eat at . Probably the most complete counter service spot in the whole of WDW . We too people watch from one of the top tables , munching the Anchors Aweigh but we really miss the chowder in the bread bowl - a challenge to be savoured . Great blog Jack , just like the rest of them and thanks for bringing this one in particular to us . It has warmed up a chilly March day here in the UK . See you at CHH when we next visit in September ?? Top table , lunch is on me

Mike

Twila Hiller:

Not only is the food and atmosphere great, the staff there always go the extra mile to help. I am in an electric wheelchair and need to reboost my batteries while in the park. The staff always help me find a table that is near an outlet so that my chair can charge while I eat. If no table is available near an outlet they move a table to an outlet for me. They are the best. The whole package just keeps me coming back.

Lisa Cargnel :

My sister and i have been going here with our sons since our first trip together in 1999. Both grown now, they continue to make annual trips to WDW with us. CHH remains the only place for us to eat in The Magic Kingdom. Our favorites by far are fish, chicken and fries and the shrimp platter (relatively new--the last few years) The portions are large and my sister and I usually split a meal. It's also a great place to ccol off in very hot weather!

Sara:

I LOVE this place so much! My family and i have been eating there since i was a baby and now im 25. We all love sitting in the bridge area.
Although we do like to try other seating areas too(only when the bridge is full) like there is a big table downstairs that is blocked off by a wall and banester. I have not sat there yet but it looks really cozy!

Penny:

Shame on you Jack!
We were just having dinner at Columbia House Friday night, and my husband said "this is our best Disney Secret". We fell in love with it 15 years ago and go back everytime we are in the world. (usually 2 or 3 times a year) it never disappoints. Except when the bread bowls disappeared of course. Great Blog as always!
Penny

Trisha Johnson:

Wow Jack! This blog is so popular, must be because of the popularity of CHH. I join everyone else in their praise. This was one of the 1st places we ate in 1998 and have been coming back every year since then. I too miss the bread bowl soups, but my favorite is the vegetarian chili. The anchors aweigh sandwich is also a favorite. My son and husband love the fish and chicken platter, although we noticed on our last trip that they switched from chicken planks to nuggets (not such a good move in my opinion!). As for the "secret room" we discovered that our 1st year too and always send one of us upstairs as soon as we get in to scope out a table on the bridge while the others get the food. Next time we are there I'll be sure to save you a seat too. Thanks for the great blog. Keep up the great work.

Sue Miller:

Thank you for bringing me back to one of my favorite places in the World! My husband worked at the Magic Kingdom in the late 70's and he introduced me to CHH on our first trip together in '94. We've eaten there on each of our return visits, but I was not aware of the wonderful bridge secret! Thank you for sharing. I hope to have a chance to enjoy some people watching there soon!

Jess:

Thanks for such a great blog! This place sounds like a real gem. We'll be there in May for our honeymoon so I've added this to our list of places we must go to! Thanks so much :)

Karen Trammell:

Jack,
I am a big fan of Columbia House and try to eat there on each visit to WDW. I was there only last week and didn't get a chance this trip. I regret it, but Ray's Starlight, listening to Sunny Eclipse and Pecos Bill were requested by other members of our group. They are great too, as is all food at Disney. I also miss the bread bowls they used have at Columbia House in which they served their clam chowder and vegetarian chili. I wish they would bring them back!

Karen from Arkansas
See ya in July

Ann:

Hi Jack,
Your secret is safe with me. We visit the world 2-3 times per year (New England weather forces us to!) This is a favorite lunch spot and with 5 out of 6 of us vegetarians, there is always something for everyone. Yum - Veg Chili and Lighthouse sandwich. I miss the bread bowls too! Wonderful blog. Thanks!

Angela:

Hi Jack,
This is a "must do" on every one of our trips. We always try to sit in the bridge section, and each time we sit there as a family I always notice someone sitting at a table there alone. I would feel compelled to ask them to join us, but I always get the feeling that they are deep in thought as they look out the window and really don't need company. I think this is the perfect stop for anybody on a "solo" WDW trip, as I know this is where I would seek out.
Thanks for the blog.

Shannon:

Jack, I'm new to 'allears' and your blogs but have been enjoying them over the past month.

This so far is my favorite. I have been to WDW numerous and didn't know Columbia House existed. When you described the bridge I had an 'aha' moment. I've always wondered what the bridge was for!

We are planning our next trip in Oct and I can't wait to try out this new gem!

Heather :

Jack, your blogs are absolutely the greatest. I have been to Disneyworld both with and without children many times. I agree that Columbia Harbour House is by far the best quick service. I think the Tuna sandwich is the best. My children enjoy looking at the maps and pictures. But you just gave away that seating secret. I never knew that was there. i have eaten there at least 6 times and had no idea. Thanks for the tip.

Jorge:

I thought the blog was pretty interesting; learned some stuff from my favorite place in Magic Kingdom to eat. But did you have to reveal the secret! lol I love eating on the bridge, its always a must do for me.

Steve:

This has been a favorite spot for my wife and I since 1975, when we were on our honeymoon. They had a meal that was deep-fried and as I recall had ham in it. It was fantastic. We too, enjoy the ambiance, and especially the background music.

Jack's Comment: It must have been a Monte Cristo Sandwich.

Tracy:

Thank you for the article on Columbia Harbour House, my FAVORITE place to eat in the Magic Kingdom. I've been eating there since I was 6 years old in 1971 and I STILL make sure to drop in for the tuna or the best Macaroni and Cheese in "the World," HOWEVER, even though I have been there dozens and dozens of times? I have never looked up and admired the nautical memorabilia above the ordering area!!I will be back in June and can't wait to go to the Columbia Harbour House again! This time, I'll sepnd some time looking around!

PENNY FROM VT:

Dear Jack,
From the number of comments so far, it appears that this was NOT a very secret place after all!I took my Califonia side of the family here for a nice counter service meal their first trip to Disney World and they were impressed with the quiet seating upstairs and the reasonable price for the food. It is nice to be able to get something a bit healthier and the clam chowder and LightHouse sandwich are my go-to favorites!
Thanks for another great blog (man, I'm getting hungry)

John:

This restraunt has been a favorite for my familiy for a very long time. I must admit that we were quite dissapointed when they stopped serving one of our favorite salads a few years back. I can't remember it's name but it came with a cranberry dressing and walnuts. Oh well, we still go for the Anchors Away sandwhich.

Josh:

Hi Jack,
I am catching up on my blog readings. First off THANKS for letting the cat out of the bag!! No, seriously, GREAT article! My wife and I love to eat here. We too sit in the bridge and people watch! We like the Liberty side so we can keep an eye on the line to my favorite MK attraction...The Haunted Mansion!

This is a great place to get out of the hustle and bustle. Makes me feel like I am in another world inside a world that I feel I can already lose all reality in!

We took the Keys to the Kingdom tour and this was our lunch stop. We had a private dining area on the second floor. This faced Liberty Square. Our tour guide pointed out the window to a door that is the only one that has a railing in front of it! Story goes, the railing is put in place because it is believed to be a famous door and people would walk by and peel the paint off to take home a piece of history!

Thanks for giving "my secret spot" the recognition it deserves!!

Roger:

I first 'discovered' Columbia Harbour House in Sept 2006 on my 3rd visit to WDW when I wanted something besides burgers to eat. I loved it from the beginning and I forgot about all of the little details.

This is also where you eat lunch on the "Keys to the Kingdom" tour. I took that on my 4th trip to WDW.

I make it a point to eat there at least once per trip. And since I haven't been in 2-1/2 years, I will be making a grand return to WDW & CHH in May!! This time I will remember to look at all the details and take pics of my own.

Ashley:

I love this restaurant! The last time we were in the Magic Kingdom we were visiting a friend who works there and we spent over an hour catching up on news from home in the Harbour House. The atmophere was so peaceful, almost like sitting in someone's house.

Kait:

Hi Jack! Definately agree with you that this the best Quick Service location in Magic Kingdom (we're an Anchors Aweigh/Fried Shrimp Basket/Clam Chowder pair) but we've never sat upstairs before! (another new thing to add to the list) I will admit though not only am I one of the few guests who looks up at the bridge--I'm the one pointing at it and mentioning that as a border between the two lands it looks different on both sides (my fiance laughs everytime and reminds me that I've shared this bit of 'trivia' several times before). Maybe we'll see you when we check out the upstairs dining next time!

Thanks a lot Jack, now where am I going to sit!!!

Hope all is well.

Enjoyed my trip along the Sassagoula River this morning.

Mark Farley:

Jack

Can you tell me if they have stopped serving the vegetarian chili, which is my favorite?

thanks

Jack's Answer:

The current menu does no offer this item. Sorry.
