Four Summer Sand Sculpting Tips from a Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Sandtastic Weekends Professional

Sandtastic Weekends

Four tips for novices to create sand sculptures like the pros this summer

Professional sand sculptor participating in the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort’s Sandtastic Weekends shares his top tips

Building a sand castle on the beach is a classic summer family activity. For those who are a tired of the standard castle and moat, there are some simple tips and tricks the experts use that can help anyone develop their sand sculpting skills and impress their friends and family.

Mark Mason is the owner of Team Sandtastic, a professional sand sculpting team recognized as one of the best in the world. They’ve won numerous competitions and hold the world record for the tallest sand castle ever hand built. From August 26 – Sept 4, their work will be on display at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort as part of Sandtastic Weekends.

Even if you’re not planning to go pro, Mason offers the following simple tricks to take your sand sculpting to the next level:

Make the most of household items

You likely already own most of the best sand sculpting tools available. They are common household goods that can typically be found in your garage and your kitchen. In the garage look for a 2-foot section of a 2”x4”, small paint brushes and gardening spade shovels. In the kitchen, look for spatulas, melon ballers, cake icing spreaders, measuring spoons, straws and wooden shish kabob spears. All of these are great carving tools.

Use a bigger bucket

If you want a bigger sculpture, you’ll need a bigger bucket. Those plastic children’s sand buckets offer the right idea – put sand inside a bucket and turn it upside to start your sculpture – however they aren’t nearly big enough to get a good starting block to carve. Instead, take a 5-gallon bucket and cut the bottom out. Filled with sand, the bucket would be too heavy to flip. But with the bottom removed, you can pack it with sand from the bottom up once you place it upside down in the sand.

Sand consistency is important

As you pack your sand, be mindful of the consistency. The sand should be wet, but not too soupy and not too dry. Pack in the sand 3 inches at a time, tamping it down with the 2”x4” piece to make sure it is packed in tightly. Keep adding sand 3 inches at a time until you’ve filled your bucket. If your sand consistency is good, you should be able to tap the sides of the bucket with your piece of wood and remove the bucket to have your starting sand block.

Tell a story

As you decide what to create, remember that creating a collage of several shapes is easier and more interesting than holding yourself to one shape. Instead of a person saying, "It's a dog," try to get them to say, "It's a dog that's dug a hole where a you can see a snake has been because there's a snake coming out of a hole on the other side of the plot and it's biting at the dog's tail."

Visitors can watch the pros and learn tips directly from Team Sandtastic as part of Sandtastic Weekends at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort Aug 26 -28 and Sept. 4 – 6. The event will feature 100 tons of sculpted sand, sand sculpting clinics, amateur sculpting contests, speed sculpting demonstrations, food, entertainment, games and more. redesigned-walt-disney-world-swan-room.jpg

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. – Sept. 30, 2015 – The largest makeover in the history of the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel is one step closer to completion. The hotel has completed redesigning every guest room in the 758-room Swan Hotel. The work is part of a multi-phase, multi-year, $125 million redesign project that will transform every guest room in both the Swan and Dolphin buildings. The first phase of the 1,509-room Dolphin starts later this year.

The new room is inspired by the resort’s water-themed architecture and offers guests a serene and sophisticated atmosphere.

The guest room features all-new upgraded furniture and all of the latest technology including large HD TVs. Additional power outlets provide corporate executives and family travelers more options for use of multiple personal electronics. A glass-topped desk on wheels provides guests with a flexible tabletop space for wherever and whatever the need.

Noted interior design and architecture firm Garcia Stromberg/GS4 Studios along with award-winning interior design firm KBCO Design created the concepts for the new rooms.

Blending an artistic combination of whites, blues and grays, the design creates a tasteful ambiance that appeals to adults while abstract artwork playfully delights children as well.

The centerpiece of the room is the famous Westin Heavenly Bed with its all-white custom-designed pillow-top mattress set, cozy down blanket, a trio of crisp sheets, goose down comforter and four over-stuffed pillows.

The design continues into a completely new bathroom, featuring residential style vanities and a back lit mirror on iridescent glass tiles.

“This new room product provides our guests with their own personal oasis,” said General Manager Fred Sawyers. “Whether visiting for business or leisure, it’s the ideal space to relax and reenergize.”

The hotel’s public spaces, restaurants, meeting rooms, shops, pools and recreational areas will not be impacted and remain fully operational throughout the renovation.

The entire rooms project is currently scheduled for completion by the end of 2017.

Santa and Mrs. Claus vacationing, life-sized chocolate Santa display and, a dancing lights show help guests celebrate the holiday season

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Nov. 5, 2013 - The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel is celebrating the season with the ever popular Holiday Happenings at the Swan and Dolphin. This year's magical month-long celebration in December will once again feature Santa - clad in cool Florida resort wear - accompanied by Mrs. Claus, as they jet off to Florida to escape the cold and spend their vacation at Santa's favorite resort, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel.

Families can enjoy a unique holiday experience away from home at the Epcot Resort Area hotel, mingling with Santa, lighting the tree with Mrs. Claus and even getting tucked in by one of Santa's elves. Santa's favorite elf, Kandy Kane, will also return this holiday season.

Children and kids at heart can enjoy a magical holiday vacation experience with this year's line-up:

Santa and Mrs. Claus Meet 'n Greets - Santa, Mrs. Claus and their favorite elf, Kandy Kane, decked out in their vacation attire, will meet with guests in Santa's customized Tiki hut select nights. The hut features reindeer, palm trees and flamingos, making it a photo opportunity like no other.

Dancing Lights Show - Each evening, the causeway transforms into a holiday spectacle, where illuminating palm trees become the performers of a dazzling musical light show featuring favorite holiday tunes.

Life-Size Chocolate Santa Scene - Constructed entirely of chocolate, this life-sized sculpture of Santa weighs in at approximately 1,200 pounds! The sculpture, created by the hotel's executive pastry chef Laurent Branlard (the only two-time world pastry champion), will be on display in the lobby of the Swan. And to make it even more decadent, a chocolate fireplace, chocolate Christmas tree and chocolate toy train will also be featured in this taste bud-tempting display. As a new addition, this year's display will feature a 7-foot tall, 400-pound chocolate nutcracker!

chocolate-main.jpg

Bedtime Elf Tuck-Ins - Even after Santa's elves have finished making presents, their work isn't really finished! On Dec. 24, parents can hire a full-costumed elf to deliver milk, cookies, a plush toy and storybook to the room; read a bedtime story and tuck the children into bed before Santa arrives. This premium service costs $55 for one child and $15 for each additional child. A service charge of 20 percent is added. Reservations are required and space is limited.

Holiday Entertainment - On select nights, guests can catch entertainment by carolers, choirs and musicians in the hotel lobbies, on the causeway and in other public areas throughout the hotel.

Celebrate the Holidays with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel

Visitors will enjoy tree-lighting ceremonies, dessert decorations, elves tucking kids into bed and more

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - To kick off the holiday season, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel is offering a variety of festive events and activities throughout December with two special guest hosts. Like many other holiday travelers, Santa and Mrs. Claus are jetting off to Florida to escape the cold, and once again have decided to spend their vacation at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel.

Families can enjoy a unique holiday experience away from home at the Epcot resort area hotel, mingling with a tropically clad Santa, lighting the tree with Mrs. Claus and even getting tucked in by one of Santa's elves.

This year's holiday happenings at the hotel include:

Santa and Mrs. Claus Meet 'n Greets

Select nights throughout December, Santa and Mrs. Claus, decked out in their vacation attire, will meet with guests in Santa's customized Tiki hut. The hut features reindeer, palm trees and flamingos, making it a photo opportunity like no other. Plus, with Santa in such a relaxed state of mind, he might even be willing to grant more gift requests for those brave enough to ask!

Life-Size Chocolate Santa

Constructed entirely of chocolate, this life-sized sculpture of Santa weighs in at approximately 1,200 pounds! The sculpture, created by the hotel's executive pastry chef Laurent Branlard (the only two-time world pastry champion), will be on display in the lobby of the Swan during the month of December. It will also include a chocolate fireplace, chocolate Christmas tree and chocolate toy train.

Bedtime Elf Tuck-ins

Even after Santa's elves have finished making Christmas presents, their work isn't finished! On Christmas Eve, the elves will visit children staying at the hotel and tuck them into bed before Santa arrives. For those who order this memorable experience, a full-costumed elf will deliver milk, cookies and a plush toy to the room, read a bedtime story and tuck the children into bed. Reservations are required and space is limited for this exclusive Christmas Eve service.

Holiday Entertainment

On select nights, the hotel will offer special holiday entertainment for visitors. Guests can enjoy beautiful musical performances by carolers, choirs and musicians in the hotel lobbies or on the causeway and other public areas throughout the resort.

Magic Keys for Santa

For children worried that Santa might not know where to deliver their gifts, these magic keys are the perfect solution. Children can hang a magic key outside their guest room on Christmas Eve to ensure that Santa finds his way.

Tree-Lighting

Guests can enjoy a special tree-lighting ceremony in the Dolphin lobby on certain nights in December, hosted by Mrs. Claus herself! Beverages and snacks will be available next to Santa's Tiki Hut.

Dessert Decorating and Holiday Movies

Throughout December, families will be able to enjoy holiday-themed movies on their guest room televisions. Children will also have the chance to decorate delicious holiday sweets in the lobby.

For more details about all the holiday excitement, including a full schedule of activities and prices, at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel or to make room reservations, please visit www.santasfavoriteresort.com or call 1-800-227-1500. Overnight rates start at $159 per night.

Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel to "Elect" a Candidate for a "Presidential" Vacation

One lucky contest winner will be awarded a stay in the hotel's luxurious presidential suite

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - As the nation prepares for the next race to the White House, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel is making its own presidential headlines by giving one lucky guest and their family the opportunity to be treated like a president with their very own presidential vacation to this iconic Walt Disney World hotel.

In honor of the 2012 presidential election, this Epcot resort area hotel will be selecting a candidate to stay in one of their eight spacious and luxuriously appointed presidential suites on a vacation fit for a leader of the free world. This is only the second time the hotel has offered a presidential suite prize. Coincidentally, the hotel's presidential suites have hosted the likes of President H.W. Bush and President Bill Clinton, presidential hopefuls like Senator John Kerry and other prominent world leaders.

As the presidential guest, the winning candidate will be invited to bring up to five "cabinet members" on a 3-day/2-night term. They will arrive via luxury transport from the airport (sorry, no motorcade!), be treated to a red carpet welcome at the hotel and can celebrate their victory with a "state" dinner using a $250 dining certificate at any of the hotel's 17 restaurants and lounges, which include Shula's Steak House, celebrity chef Todd English's bluezoo and Il Mulino New York Trattoria.

The "elected" candidate (chosen by random drawing) along with their guests will receive complimentary Walt Disney World theme park three-day Park Hopper passes as well as all the other amenities offered by the hotel, including complimentary transportation to all Walt Disney World Theme Parks and Attractions; the opportunity to dine with loveable Disney characters at Garden Grove restaurant; Extra Magic Hours benefit, where each day, one of the four Walt Disney World Theme Parks offers additional time for guests to enjoy select attractions and advance tee times on four championship Walt Disney World golf courses. The total prize package is valued at $4,825. No caucuses, campaigning or primaries are needed for this vote - guests simply nominate themselves by visiting www.swandolphin.com/election and signing up anytime before the polls close on Nov. 6.

And just like the current race, only time will tell who will be the winning candidate. The winner will be announced on Nov. 7 at www.swandolphin.com/election and has a year to "take office".

The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel offers eight presidential suites featuring elegant bathroom and bedroom appointments richly designed in residential-style décor. Presidential suites feature amenities including: multiple 42" flat-screen TVs, deluxe private bathrooms, Westin Heavenly Beds, kitchens with a private bar and dining room table and extraordinary views of Walt Disney World Resort.

Santa in tropical attire, elves tucking kids into bed and a life-size chocolate Santa sculpture all part of hotel's holiday celebration

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Holiday travelers may not know this, but prior to his big night, Santa Claus, along with Mrs. Claus, escapes from the cold, ice and snow to go on a sunny Florida vacation at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel. He and the Missus will be decked out in their tropical attire (no red suits with fur trim here!) sunning and lounging the day away. On Christmas Eve, children can hang a magic key for Santa outside their guest room, which can be accompanied by a gift wish list to help Santa (ahem, and parents) leave wrapped gifts for the following morning.

Mrs. Claus's Holiday Hotline

After families check into their guest room, children (with mom or dad's permission) can dial Mrs. Claus's Hotline to hear a special holiday message from Mrs. Claus.

Tree-Lighting

Select nights throughout December, Mrs. Claus will conduct a festive tree-lighting ceremony in the Dolphin lobby, illuminating a magnificent 45-ft. tall tree. Following the ceremony, complimentary holiday beverages and snacks will be available next to Santa's Tiki hut.

Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - As the nation prepares for this historic election, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin is making its own presidential history by giving one lucky guest and their family the opportunity to be treated like a president with their very own presidential vacation.

In honor of the eventful 2008 presidential election, the resort will be electing a candidate to stay in one of their eight spacious and luxuriously appointed presidential suites on a vacation fit for a leader of the free world. This is the first time the resort has offered a presidential suite prize, as the suites range in prices up to $3,100 a night. Coincidentally, the hotel's presidential suites have hosted the likes of Presidents H.W. Bush and Clinton, presidential hopefuls like Senator John Kerry and other prominent world leaders.

As the presidential guest, the winning candidate will be invited to bring up to five "cabinet members" on a 3-day/2-night term. They will arrive via limousine transport from the airport (sorry, no motorcade!), be treated to a red carpet welcome at the resort and can celebrate their victory with a "state" dinner using a $250 dining certificate at any of the resort's 17 restaurants and lounges, which include Shula's Steak House, Todd English's bluezoo and Il Mulino New York Trattoria.

The "elected" (chosen by random drawing) candidate along with their guests will receive complimentary Walt Disney World theme park three-day Park Hopper passes as well as all the other amenities offered by the resort including complimentary transportation to all Walt Disney World Theme Parks and Attractions, the opportunity to dine with loveable Disney characters at Garden Grove restaurant, Disney's Extra Magic Hours benefit, offering early park entrance or an extended hour after park closing and advance tee times on four championship Walt Disney World golf courses. The total prize package is valued at $4900.

No caucuses, campaigning or primaries are needed for this vote - guests simply nominate themselves by visiting www.swandolphin.com/election and signing up anytime before the polls close on Nov. 4.

And just like the current race, only time will tell who will be the winning ticket. The winner will be announced Nov. 5 at www.swandolphin.com/election and has a year to "take office".

The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort offers eight presidential suites featuring elegant bathroom and bedroom appointments richly designed in residential-style décor. Presidential suites feature amenities including: multiple 42" flat-screen TVs, deluxe private bathrooms, Westin Heavenly Beds®, a full kitchen with a private bar and dining room for eight and extraordinary views of Walt Disney World Resort .
