‘Tis the Season to be Spooky! Disneyland Resort Celebrates Halloween Time 2011 Sept. 16 Through Oct. 31

Separate-ticket 'Mickey's Halloween Party' Offers Trick-or-Treating In Disneyland Park; Ticket Sales Begin July 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. July 1, 2011 - The spirit of Halloween Time will invade Disneyland Resort this fall with Disney villains, Mickey Mouse and his friends in Halloween costumes, and the seasonal transformations of Haunted Mansion into Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain into Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy. Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort begins Friday, Sept. 16, and will continue through Halloween, Monday, Oct. 31.

The after-hours Mickey's Halloween Party, a separate-ticket event* which has become an annual highlight of Halloween Time for trick-or-treating families, will take place in Disneyland park on 10 special Monday, Tuesday and Friday nights: Sept. 30 and Oct. 3,7,11,14,18,21, 25, 28 and 31. Tickets go on sale Friday, July 1, at Disneyland.com/halloween.

Mickey's Halloween Party invites adults and children to dress up in costume and trick-or-treat at the resort. These party participants can also "mix in" with regular Disneyland guests for three hours prior to the start of Mickey's private bash. Highlights of Mickey's Halloween Party include:

  • The special opportunity to play in Disneyland for three hours before the party starts
  • Trick or Treating - candy and healthy treats - in the ultimate Disney neighborhood
  • The "Halloween Screams" fireworks spectacular, hosted by "Master of Scare-omonies" Jack Skellington (presented exclusively for guests of Mickey's Halloween Party)
  • "Mickey's Costume Party" cavalcade, performed twice nightly
  • Character photo locations featuring favorite Disney and Pixar pals.
  • An opportunity for everyone in the family to attend the park in costumes
  • Specially themed dance parties
  • Nearly all the favorite Disneyland rides and attractions
Tickets purchased in advance for Mickey's Halloween Party are $49 most days, while tickets purchased on the event days are $59. All tickets to Mickey's Halloween Party on Friday, Oct. 28, and Halloween Night, Monday, Oct. 31, are $64. Favorite Disney characters, including Mickey himself, will dress up in fun, fall costumes. It's the ideal environment to eat special holiday treats, play interactive games, listen to "spirited" music and watch a nightly character cavalcade that celebrates the season. For Halloween fun at Disneyland, guests will enjoy Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy in Tomorrowland. The experience begins as a typical Space Mountain adventure, but suddenly launches voyagers into a haunted section of the universe. Ghosts appear out of the starry darkness and swirling galaxies of Space Mountain, reaching out as if to grab guests as they speed through space. The exhilarating drops and curves of the journey are punctuated by piercing screams, creepy sound effects and haunting music. Jack Skellington also returns to take over the Haunted Mansion and bring back Haunted Mansion Holiday to New Orleans Square in Disneyland. Transformed to a mix of Halloween spookiness and Christmas tradition, Haunted Mansion Holiday is inspired by the classic animated film "Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas." Jack's return to the Haunted Mansion includes the traditional Halloween/Christmas gingerbread house in the Mansion Ballroom, with some special spooky surprises in this year's design. Halloween Time offers frightfully delightful fun for children and adults.
  • For spine-tingling fun, drop in at The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure park, where a "supernatural" event happened on Halloween evening, 1939, forever haunting the building.
  • Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland is transformed for the Pumpkin Festival. More than 300 pumpkins will be on display and none of them are the same!
  • Visitors to Big Thunder Ranch in Frontierland will find ranch animals, pumpkin carvers, Halloween décor and activities for youngsters.
  • Meeting Disney characters will be easier than ever as Disney villains gather to plot Halloween mischief at "it's a small world" Mall in Disneyland, while other characters in spooky attire greet guests in Town Square, Main Street, U.S.A.
  • Rancho del Zocalo in Frontierland will honor Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead with traditional skeleton figures on display Sept. 16 through Nov. 2.
  • Special Halloween treats will be available in Disneyland, including menu items such as Zero's Ghostly Ghoulash, served in a dog dish in honor of Zero.

Burbank, Calif. - July 14, 2011 - A strong commitment to corporate citizenship is as much a part of The Walt Disney Company's heritage as the family entertainment that has delighted and captivated audiences for decades. Disney opens a new chapter in that level of commitment at the D23 Expo on Friday, August 19, 2011 in the Anaheim Convention Center Main Hall. A special announcement will be part of a storytelling event featuring two of America's best-known and most popular writers, Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, and David Arquette, star of Disney Junior's #1 series, "Jake and the Never Land Pirates."

Disney Publishing Worldwide authors Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson have enthralled readers since 2004 with their re-imagining of Peter Pan's adventures, "Peter and the Starcatchers," the best-selling and award-winning prequel trilogy. Visitors are invited to hear from the authors, listen to a family reading event led by Disney Junior's "Jake and the Never Land Pirates" star David Arquette, participate in the big announcement and receive a free book.

"By nurturing young readers we help support creativity and imagination, an important part of our citizenship mission at Disney," said Leslie Goodman, Senior Vice President, Disney Corporate Citizenship. "We welcome the opportunity to collaborate with Disney Publishing Worldwide to bring this special event to the D23 Expo while at the same time encouraging visitors to take part in our daily pavilion activities that show how we can all make a lasting, positive change in the world."

At this year's D23 Disney Corporate Citizenship pavilion, visitors will see how they can take action through Disney Friends for Change, an initiative that helps inspire kids and families to join together and make a positive impact on their world. Visitors can participate as an "honorary" Disney VoluntEAR in a different community service project each day, including preparing child comfort kits for kids in need, assembling care packages for military families and planting seedlings for the environment.

Visitors can also become "honorary" D23 Green Team members by taking part in a scavenger hunt that will lead them through the Expo in a quest to boost their environmental I.Q. Not only will they find out what Disney is doing to help protect the planet for future generations, they'll be in the running for prizes and a fun Friends for Change photo as well!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Celebrates White Rhino Birth in Uganda

disney-animal-kingdom-rhino-gives%20birth-in-uganda.jpg

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., July 20, 2011 - Nande, a 12-year-old female white rhino born at Disney's Animal Kingdom, gave birth June 4 to a healthy female calf at the Ziwa Sanctuary in Uganda. The baby, named Malaika ("angel" in Swahili), is the first female white rhino born in Uganda in more than 30 years.

Animal care experts from the Rhino Fund Uganda team have been closely monitoring Nande and Malaika as they bond. Nande is a second-time mother. She gave birth to her first baby, a male calf, in 2009.

Nande is one of two white rhinos born at Disney's Animal Kingdom that traveled to Africa in 2006 as part of the first-ever reintroduction of white rhinos from the United States to Uganda. She was accompanied by Hasani, a male, also born at Disney's Animal Kingdom, and joined four other white rhinos at the Ziwa Sanctuary to help re-establish a white rhino population that has been extinct in Uganda since 1982 as a casualty of civil unrest in the region. Nande was born in 1999, and Hasani was born in 2001. Guests can see both white and black rhinos on the Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction.

Disney's commitment to conservation and rhinos goes beyond this first-ever rhino transfer. The Walt Disney Company Foundation and the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund have supported more than $940,000 in rhino protection and research projects in partnership with non-profit organizations throughout the world.

Disney's Animal Kingdom is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). With its more than 200 accredited members, AZA is a leader in global wildlife conservation and a link to helping animals in their native habitats.

Construction Crews at Disney's Art of Animation Resort Celebrate "Topping Out"

disney-art-of-animation-topping-out.jpg

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., July 21, 2011 - The hundreds of people who are building Disney's Art of Animation Resort from the ground up gathered to mark the project's "topping out."

The "topping out" is a special moment that typically occurs in the construction and engineering industry when the highest piece of structure, either steel or concrete, is placed on the building's frame. The tradition dates back to the Vikings, who would place an evergreen tree on the top of a building to celebrate and bring good luck.

At the construction site for Disney's Art of Animation Resort, a crane helped lift the traditional evergreen to the roof of a building that will soon be part of the Lion King wing of the resort hotel.

"The hundreds of people we have working on Disney's Art of Animation Resort are doing an amazing job helping us build a resort hotel that will really delight our guests," said Gary Hoffmann, senior project manager for Walt Disney Imagineering. "The traditional topping out is an important milestone on a project that continues to run on schedule for an opening just ten months from now."

In size and scope the construction of Disney's Art of Animation Resort is a major project at Walt Disney World Resort, creating upwards of 800 construction jobs. Once open in 2012, Disney's Art of Animation Resort will also create 750 permanent resort hotel jobs.

Walt Disney World Resort features 25 uniquely themed, Disney owned-and-operated resort hotels with more than 26,000 guest rooms - something for every taste and budget. Disney's Art of Animation Resort will likewise be unique, with themed building exteriors and room interiors that bring to life The Lion King, Cars, Finding Nemo and The Little Mermaid.

Finding Nemo, Cars and The Lion King buildings will be entirely family suites, with 1,120 suites between them. The Little Mermaid buildings will feature 864 rooms in the "value" room category.

The construction of family suites at Disney's Art of Animation Resort is an innovative approach to a changing marketplace. Today more and more multi-generational families are traveling together for various celebrations, including family reunions. These families not only want to play together, they want to stay together, which has created tremendous demand for family suites.

The first wing of Disney's Art of Animation Resort, Finding Nemo, is scheduled to open in May 2012.

BURBANK, Calif. - July 26, 2011 - The special fall issue of Disney twenty-three magazine, on stands August 2, is dedicated entirely to the 40th anniversary of Walt Disney World.

An illuminating all-encompassing interview with Imagineering dynamo Eric Jacobson rounds out the issue, as he tours the Magic Kingdom with Disney twenty-three, pointing out some of his park favorites and giving readers a preview of the new, expanded Fantasyland.

In addition to the look back at the excitement leading up to the spectacular opening of the Walt Disney World Resort in October 1971, Disney twenty-three's fall issue includes an intimate, never-before-told portrait of Walt's brother Roy, by his grandson Roy P. And there's more in the autumn issue of Disney twenty-three:

WE SAY IT'S DISNEY!: Bob Foster played a key role in the acquisition of the land that would become Walt Disney World. With Bob's insights and recollections, Disney archivist Steven Vagnini takes us back to the twinkle in Walt's eye that eventually became a reality.

Kakigori Cart in Japan Pavilion at Epcot Expands with Savory, Sweet Bites

kabuki-cafe-at-epcot.jpg

from the Disney Parks Blog...

On a hot afternoon, nothing is better than a shaved ice, or kakigori, from the little cart in front of the Japan pavilion at Epcot. A brain freeze is inevitable as we slurp the icy, sweet treat.

Now the cart, just reopened this week, has a new name - Kabuki Cafe - and new tastes, the kind of satisfying nibbles you can eat and still stroll.

The shaved ice still is there, but now the menu includes edamame (steamed soybeans in the pod) and meal-in-a-bowl miso soup, plus sweet plum wine and sake. And smoothies and ice cream cups join the sweet line-up.

Delicious salty-sweet tastes for munching and strolling World Showcase Lagoon.

It’s a Musical "Jolly Holiday" as Dick Van Dyke & The Vantastix Bring Harmony and Melodic Fun to First Night of Disney’s D23 Expo, August 19-21, 2011

D23Expo_Logo.jpg

BURBANK, Calif. (July 29, 2011) - Disney fans attending the first day of Disney's D23 Expo, presented by D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, August 19-21 at the Anaheim Convention Center, will be able to end their day with an unforgettable evening of harmony provided by Dick Van Dyke & The Vantastix. The popular vocal quartet is comprised of legendary television, Broadway, and film star Dick Van Dyke and three renowned west coast musicians-Mike Mendyke, Bryan Chadima and Eric Bradley. The group will appear in concert on Stage 23 at the D23 Expo on Friday, August 19, 2011, at 8:15 p.m.

Songs from Van Dyke's varied entertainment career in addition to many well-known Disney hits and timeless pop standards will be performed by Van Dyke and The Vantastix in a show rich in humor, pure entertainment and sing-along favorites. Much of the show's song roster is based on Put On A Happy Face, the group's inaugural a cappella album, which features 14 well-known tunes. The CD will be available for purchase in the D23 Expo Treasure Trove store.

Dick Van Dyke & The Vantastix is the result of a chance meeting of Van Dyke and Mendyke at a Malibu coffee shop in September 2000. With the addition of Chadima and Bradley, the group started "just for fun," gathering weekly for pizza and singing around Van Dyke's piano, and soon built up an impressive repertoire of children's songs and standards.

After their first casual performance during the wrap party for Van Dyke's long-running mystery TV series Diagnosis Murder, the group began to get requests to appear at charity events and benefits. They have performed at the City of Hope Hospital; the Beverly Hilton for the Society of Singers Concert honoring Dame Julie Andrews; the Hollywood Bowl as part of an evening of TV theme songs; and at the awarding of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Rose Marie, who appeared with Van Dyke on The Dick Van Dyke Show.

There have also been television appearances at the TV Land Awards, Larry King Live, and a performance of the National Anthem for the NBA Playoffs and more. The group continues to perform at benefits in the greater Los Angeles area.

"Hard work and planning are important if one wants to get ahead in life," Van Dyke says. "More important is leaving one's self open to the twists and turns, the wonderful surprises that life has to offer. If you can't bend with the wind, go with the flow, you're gonna miss some great adventures. These three guys walked into my life from out of nowhere and turned my Golden Years into pure platinum. We always have a great time performing together, and we're looking forward to appearing at the D23 Expo."

Dick Van Dyke - Van Dyke began his remarkable career more than 50 years ago in a record-pantomime act called The Merry Mutes. He then went on to host several TV shows before starring on Broadway in Bye Bye Birdie, for which he received a Tony Award®. The classic sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show came next, then the screen version of Birdie, followed by the classic Disney film musical Mary Poppins, the equally adored movie musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the recent hit Night at the Museum, and a host of other wonderfully entertaining films. Winner of five Emmy Awards®, Van Dyke completed nine seasons of the TV series Diagnosis Murder.

Bryan Chadima - Bryan Chadima is a writer, musical director, arranger, and singer. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from Western Michigan University. He has toured nationally and recorded albums with numerous vocal groups and shows including Blind Man's Bluff, Gold Company, Vox Lumiere, and The Three Waiters. His musical directing credits include Klub Kokomo and Baby It's You. Chadima arranges most of the material performed by the Vantastix.

Eric Bradley - Bradley's road to Los Angeles began in Connecticut where he grew up then at the University of Miami, where he studied music, film, and television, and then to Chicago, where he started his career as a vocalist and voice-over actor. Bradley now enjoys a career as a studio singer in LA. His film and TV credits include The Simpsons Movie, Spiderman 3, Blades of Glory, King Kong, Superman Returns, The Polar Express, Enchanted, I Am Legend, How I Met Your Mother, Family Guy, and the Oscars telecast. He also sings with jazz sensation Sixth Wave, the 2001 National Harmony Sweepstakes Champions.

Mike Mendyke - An MIT graduate and former NASA engineer with degrees in aerospace engineering and music, Mendyke believes every vocal group should include at least one rocket scientist. After eight years in the defense industry, he began recording albums and touring the U.S. and Japan with the vocal group Five O'Clock Shadow. A longtime advocate of vocal music, Mendyke is a past board member and former treasurer for The Contemporary A Cappella Society. Mendyke also runs an online marketing business, as well as music distribution services.
