The Little Mermaid’ Attraction Opens June 3 in Disney California Adventure Park

ANAHEIM, Calif., June 2, 2011 - Guests will enter the enchanting story of "The Little Mermaid," complete with characters and songs from the Academy Award-winning Disney animated motion picture, when they board The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure, premiering Friday, June 3, in Disney California Adventure park at the Disneyland Resort.

Set in and around Ariel's underwater world and located inside a new space on Paradise Pier, the new attraction combines the enduring appeal of a classic Disney "dark ride" with wonderful technological innovations to offer guests a personal journey into the scenes of the film. The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure adds to the excitement of Disney Soundsational Summer, June 3 through Sept 5, a season that offers guests even more ways to make special memories at the Disneyland Resort.

Adventurers on the attraction will feel as if they are descending below the ocean's surface, one of the special effects that take this "dark ride" to a new level of sophistication. Once "under the sea," guests will find themselves immersed in the classic story of "The Little Mermaid," sharing Ariel's adventure through advanced Audio-Animatronics technology, a magical cast of characters and a captivating musical score that will entice everyone to sing along.

"Being involved in this attraction is a dream come true for me," said Lisa Girolami, Walt Disney Imagineer and Senior Show Producer for The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure. "I watched the movie when it first came out and I've seen it many, many times since. To be able to create Ariel's world and bring it to our guests, and then get to watch the faces of the kids and parents as they come through here, is just going to be the best thing ever."

'Out of the sea - Wish I could be - Part of that world'

The fun begins outside the attraction, where the building housing The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure is a new landmark along Paradise Pier. Its Victorian Exposition-style exterior, including a statue of King Triton and relief carvings of frolicking mermaids (Ariel's sisters), was inspired by the spectacular pavilions found in the classic seaside amusement parks of the early 20th century.

"Many times I've thought, 'Why didn't we have a Mermaid attraction sooner?'" Keane said. "But now I'm glad we didn't. They've done this one so well."

Actresses Pat Carroll (left) and Jodi Benson (right), who voiced the roles of Ursula and Ariel in Disney's 'The Little Mermaid' are reunited at the all-new attraction 'The Little Mermaid - Ariel's Undersea Adventure' at Disney California Adventure park in Anaheim, Calif., on Wednesday. The first-ever attraction based on the classic Disney film opens June 3, 2011. (Paul Hiffmeyer/Disneyland)

In The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure, Ariel's story unfolds in colorful scenes filled with Audio-Animatronics characters and memorable music from the hit Disney animated motion picture, "The Little Mermaid." The Disney California Adventure park attraction brings the popular motion picture to life in magnificent scenes where guests can sing along with Sebastian and friends, keep an eye out for the evil Ursula, and experience the romance of Ariel and Eric. Special effects transport guests "under the sea," taking them into Ariel's world in ways never before seen.

The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure - Fun Facts Disney California Adventure

The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel's Undersea Adventure opened to guests on June 3, 2011, at Disney California Adventure park. This whimsical underwater adventure begins when guests board pastel-colored clamshell vehicles and head "under the sea" to visit Ariel and her friends in a musical retelling of the classic motion picture. During this immersive experience, guests will see the Little Mermaid falling in love, getting her legs, losing her voice and winning the prince as the best-loved musical numbers bring the attraction to life all around them.
"This is the first Disney ride-through attraction that takes you "under the sea" with Ariel, Prince Eric, Sebastian and Ursula, with music and scenes from "The Little Mermaid" film.

•Nearly 200 Audio-Animatronics figures perform in the attraction. The Under the Sea scene alone has 128 figures, including 50 spinning starfish.

•Ursula is the largest Audio-Animatronics figure in the show at 7½-feet tall and 12-feet wide. She also has a squash-and-stretch function in her torso and flexible materials so she can bounce along with the music.

•An 86-foot long, hand-painted mural greets guests in the loading area of the attraction. The mural depicts many of the characters guests will see within the attraction including Prince Eric, King Triton, Sebastian, Flounder and, of course, Ariel.

•The attraction was created by a team of talented Imagineers and consultants including Senior Show Producer Lisa Girolami, Creative Director/Show Designer Larry Nikolai, and Frank Antonides, director of project management - all from Walt Disney Imagineering - along with Chris Crump, production and show designer, and Danny Troob, musical arranger and orchestrator.

•The attraction building was inspired by the Dragon Gorge scenic railway at the long-gone Ocean Park amusement zone in Southern California.

•The building's façade features a statue of King Triton and relief carvings of six frolicking mermaids. The mermaids are Ariel's older sisters: Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Attina, Adella, and Alana.

Little Mermaid

•The Palace of Fine Arts rotunda, originally the entrance to the former "Golden Dreams" attraction, has been incorporated into The Little Mermaid attraction architecture and is now part of the entrance façade.

•A special skin technology had to be incorporated into the Audio-Animatronics figures for Ariel, King Triton and Ursula since they have so much skin exposed.

•The attraction features an Omnimover ride system pioneered by Walt Disney Imagineers in the 1960s and used for the "Doom Buggies" of the Haunted Mansion, as well as in Adventures Through Inner Space, formerly in Tomorrowland.

•Attraction vehicles are sculpted multi-colored, pastel clamshells.

Little Mermaid

•The attraction experience is approximately 5½ minutes from the time guests load the clamshell to the time they exit the clamshell.

•Music in the queue features an orchestral medley of songs from the film.

•Songs from the original film written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are featured in the attraction: "Part of Your World," "Kiss the Girl," "Poor Unfortunate Souls," and the Academy Award winning "Under the Sea." Guests will recognize the voices of Jodi Benson (Ariel) and Pat Carroll (Ursula).

•The Little Mermaid feature film debuted November 15, 1989, and the film won Academy Awards for Best Song, "Under the Sea," and Best Original Score.

•The Little Mermaid was the first Disney film based on a classic fairy tale since Sleeping Beauty three decades earlier.

•Imagineers working on the attraction consulted with Ariel's animator in the film, Glen Keane, who recommended that her hair be treated as a character all its own.

•Each scene of the attraction was first built as a one-quarter-inch scale model and then as a one inch scale model, so Imagineers could "ride" through the attraction scene-by-scene before full construction began.

Little Mermaid

•The attraction concludes with a surprise ending that takes us beyond the ending of the film.

•A similar version of the attraction is scheduled to open in the new Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

Enchanted Tales with Belle - A Peak Behind the New Fantasyland Walls

Information and Photos from the Disney Parks Blog by Jennifer Fickley-Baker

"Beauty and the Beast" was released in theaters in 1991, and to say that I was obsessed with this movie is putting it mildly. I was 12 years old when it debuted and I must've seen the film at least 10 times that summer. In my mind, nothing was better than spending an afternoon wrapped up in this tale of "far-off places, daring swordfights, magic spells, a prince in disguise!" I remember sitting in the theater, dreaming of visiting Belle's quiet French village, exploring the halls of the Beast's mysterious castle and whirling across the golden ballroom in a gown of the same color.

Soon fans of all ages will have the opportunity to do just that and take a trip through the world of "Beauty and the Beast" at the Enchanted Tales with Belle storybook adventure, which is currently under construction as part of the Fantasyland expansion at Magic Kingdom Park.

Walt Disney Imagineering is currently building Maurice's workshop, which will serve as scene one of the experience. The workshop, which is modeled after a French cottage, will be surrounded by a wishing well, footbridges and lush landscaping. Once inside, guests will step through a magic mirror and find themselves inside Beast's expansive library, which he created as a gift for Belle in the film. This room will serve as the setting for a memorable character interaction experience with Belle - which will require a little help from Lumiere, the enchanted candlestick.

Another "Beauty and the Beast" experience planned for this area is the Be Our Guest Restaurant, which will allow up to 550 guests to dine in the ballroom, gallery and "West Wing" area of Beast's castle.

These and other Fantasyland enhancements will open in phases starting in late 2012.

Disney Announces Worldwide Celebration to Honor 10th Member of the Disney Princess Royal Court, Rapunzel

'Rapunzel's royal celebration' To Take Place At Kensington Palace In London, UK

Girls From Across The Globe & Every Disney Princess Character To Join The Festivities

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Disney will officially welcome Rapunzel as the 10th Disney Princess character at a high profile, star-studded celebration, to take place in front of a global audience on October 2, 2011. Little princesses from across the globe will watch Rapunzel be welcomed into the Disney Princess royal court by Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, Snow White and Tiana.

In a world first, Kensington Palace, London, UK, was chosen by Disney as the perfect location for this magical welcoming ceremony of a Disney Princess, as it has been the home of many real life princesses over the centuries.

"Once Rapunzel becomes an official member of the Disney Princess court, she will be celebrated and recognized as such across Disney, and will be included in all Disney Princess products featuring multiple characters, in addition to her own merchandise line. Plus, across all Disney Parks, Rapunzel will for the first time wear her royal tiara, stolen from the kingdom by Flynn Rider in the Tangled film," said Mary Beech, vice president of girls franchise development and marketing at Disney Consumer Products. We are inviting girls from across the globe to welcome each Disney Princess character to the Palace and celebrate with Rapunzel on her special day."

Independent charity Historic Royal Palaces has joined with Disney to help stage the event, in a collaboration that aims to encourage children all over the world to explore the stories behind the real kings, queens, princes and princesses alongside Disney's. "Our aim is to help everyone explore the stories of how monarchs and other royals have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built," said Ruth Gill, Head of Interpretation at Historic Royal Palaces. "Kensington Palace has always been a place of spectacle, beauty and majesty, and home to many inspirational real-life Princesses. We are therefore delighted to celebrate our relationship with Disney by hosting this magical event that will welcome Rapunzel as the 10th member of the Disney Princess royal court."

All ten Disney Princess characters will take part in the royal celebration and will be joined by VIPs, celebrities and little princesses from across the globe in festivities including a procession through Hyde Park, party activities and a welcoming ceremony.

Each Disney Princess character has a unique story that empowers girls to imagine and live their very own fairy tales. Rapunzel is a modern heroine - she may have lived her entire life locked inside a hidden tower but Rapunzel is no damsel in distress. The girl with 70 feet of glowing, magical hair is an energetic, inquisitive young lady who fills her days with art, books and imagination. She is full of curiosity about the outside world and can't help but feel her true destiny lies outside of the lonely tower walls.

Kensington Palace has been a residence of the British Royal Family since the 17th century and is famed for its associations with Princesses. Princess Victoria (later Queen Victoria, Britain's longest reigning monarch) was born at Kensington Palace on 24th May 1819 and was christened the following month in the Cupola Room. Her love for the palace ensured the renovations of the State Apartments in 1897 which were opened to the public on Queen Victoria's 80th birthday. Today, parts of Kensington Palace continue to serve as residences for members of the Royal Family. The best known resident in recent years was Diana, Princess of Wales, who occupied apartments in the north-west part of the palace from 1981-1997.

Storybook Circus at Magic Kingdom - A Closer Look!

from the Disney Parks Blog

With all the updates we've done on the "royal" side of the Fantasyland expansion - Beast's Castle, Maurice's Cottage and Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid - the plans for Storybook Circus seemed to be a bit more mysterious. Until now.

Storybook Circus will be based on our animated film, "Dumbo." Here, Casey Jr., the famous locomotive from the movie, has rolled into town and brought the grand Storybook Circus with him. The area will be filled with colorful circus tents and nods to the famous film. For example, guests - especially little ones - are welcome to cool down with Casey Jr., who can be found near the train station, getting splashed by playful circus animals.

Just past Casey Jr., guests will encounter big-top circus tents that lead to a "double" version of Dumbo the Flying Elephant. Also, in the tradition of classic air shows, Barnstormer will take on a new look and theme, becoming a spiraling stunt plane built by The Great Goofini.

JACK AND BONITA WRATHER struck a deal with their friend Walt Disney in 1954 to build a luxury family hotel on property adjacent to Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Ground was broken on March 18, 1955, and the hotel opened six and a half months later-104 rooms in five two-story buildings at a starting room rate of $15. The Disneyland Hotel, originally conceived as simply lodging, presaged future developments in how Americans entertained themselves, pioneering, as Jack's son Chris wrote, "new forms of dining as entertainment, shopping as entertainment and the use of a waterfront setting" in an urban environment. The Disneyland Hotel has since played host to kings, queens, presidents, entertainment and sports legends and families from around the world.

In 1983, Watson was elected as Chairman of the Board and after stepping down as chairman 1984, remained on the Board until he retired in 2004 after serving the Company for 30 years and establishing a worldwide reputation as a real estate development visionary.

GUY WILLIAMS was an acclaimed actor who starred in the hit Disney television series Zorro and two feature films, The Sign of Zorro and Zorro the Avenger. Real-life Rafiki - a Baby Mandrill - Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., June 15, 2011 -- After six and a half months of waiting, Disney's Animal Kingdom is welcoming a "colorful" addition to its animal family. A male baby mandrill was born May 30 to first-time mother, Kelley, and is the third one born at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Mom and baby are doing very well.

Native to Africa, mandrills are among the largest species of monkey in the world and are considered endangered. They're known for their bright coloration, furry head crests, manes and beards. Adults also have thick purple and blue ridges along their noses, big red lips and golden beards. Fans of Disney's animated movie "The Lion King" might recall Rafiki, who was not only a colorful character, but a mandrill as well.

So far, Disney's animal care experts are encouraged by the bonding between mother and infant. The baby spends most of his day nursing and sleeping, and is under close observation by the animal care team. The baby and mother are starting to make short forays into their habitat on the Kilimanjaro Safaris, joining other members of the mandrill group.

"The new mom is very relaxed but protective," said Barb Weber, primate zoological manager at Disney's Animal Kingdom. "We're pleased another young female mandrill, Scarlett, has taken a keen interest in the newborn. This is a great experience for her because she is learning from the baby's mom how to be a good mom herself."

Preparations for motherhood began long before the baby mandrill was born. For example, primate keepers worked with Kelley during pregnancy to pick up objects which helped simulate holding her baby after birth.

With the new baby, the number of mandrills that make their home at Disney's Animal Kingdom has grown to 12. Disney's Animal Kingdom is part of a breeding program coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) that is focused on sustaining the mandrill population.

Fun Facts:

Typical mandrill babies weigh between one and two pounds at birth.
Adult female mandrills weigh an average of 30 pounds. Adult males are larger and average 60-100 pounds.
The average life span of a mandrill is approximately 20 - 30 years.

Victoria & Albert’s Once Again Receives Highly Coveted AAA Five-Diamond Award

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., June 21, 2011 - For the 12th consecutive year, Victoria & Albert's at Disney' Grand Floridian Resort & Spa has been awarded the coveted AAA Five-Diamond Award. Victoria & Albert's is the only restaurant in Orlando and one of only three in Florida to be honored with the highest accolade a restaurant can achieve.

Victoria & Albert's Chef Scott Hunnel has drawn national and international applause for his preparation and delivery of American regional cuisine with classical influences at the elegant, 50-seat restaurant.

"Earning the AAA Five-Diamond Award is like winning an Oscar," said Victoria & Albert's Chef Scott Hunnel. "To be one of 55 restaurants in all of North America to receive this prestigious award is such an honor. It confirms our philosophy that it takes passion and a synchronized team to deliver consistent, top-quality cuisine night after night!"

A Disney cast member for more than 20 years, Chef Hunnel understands that the fundamentals of cooking don't change, rather with time, palette's change. He believes it's the continuous evolution that goes into each dish that makes the cooking and the menu at Victoria & Albert's different from other restaurants. To keep pace with the ever-changing food & beverage industry, Chef Hunnel takes gastronomic journeys to visit world-class restaurants, hotels, farms and markets for healthy and savory inspirations.

"Working for Disney has been very gratifying because the company understands that to be the best, we must never stop exploring and growing in constant pursuit of excellence."

Take for example one of his signature dishes -- the prosciutto-wrapped lamb served with cipollini onions and sherry vinaigrette - which tastefully demonstrates classical European influences combined with the culinary expertise behind the Victoria & Albert's team of award-winning chefs.

"What makes Victoria & Albert's exceptional is not only the incredible cuisine, but the entire dining experience," said Kevin Myers, vice president of Walt Disney World Resort Operations. "From reservations, the very personal table-side service, sommeliers, chefs and pastry chefs.....the whole team is dedicated to delivering a memorable evening for each of our guests. We couldn't be prouder of the entire team."

Those memorable experiences have led to other accolades including the Orlando Sentinel's 2011 Culinary Hall of Fame, the Forbes Four Diamond Award, Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence and Florida Trend's Golden Spoon Award. Chef Hunnel was also a 2011 semi-finalist in the annual list of top chefs in the country by the James Beard Foundation. He has also been recognized annually since 2007 by the Foundation for his refreshingly contemporary approach in the kitchen and straightforward cooking philosophy.
