French Family Meal Traditions - Epcot Food and Wine Festival

Deb's Digest Blog

New this year at Epcot's International Food and Wine Festival is a dining experience entitled: French Family Meal Traditions, held in Monsieur Paul (France Epcot). This has replaced the long standing French Regional Lunch.

french-family-meal-1.JPG

"For the past few years our team from Monsieur Paul has been delighting you with delicious French Regional Lunches. This year, take a trip back home where each week one of our chefs will prepare a favorite meal from their childhood."

french-family-meal-4.JPG

Eric Weistroffer, Director of Operations, Chefs de France, shared that on Sundays, most everything is closed in France and families get together to cook and eat and share. This new Festival event, French Family Traditions, reflects that age old tradition.

Let me start by saying I"m not a huge fan of either traditional French cuisine or French wines. For me, the cuisine is very heavy and relies too much on sauces. That said, I do love the lighter fare and desserts that can be found at Boulangerie Patisserie les Halles and of course L'Artisan des Glaces. I wasn't expecting to be wowed at lunch but I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it.

Our French Family Meal was served at a wonderful, enjoyable pace. We dined from noon to 3:00pm and never felt rushed to finish a course. All the while, the wines kept flowing!

Our meal began with Alluette au fromage, Cheese Stick ...

french-family-meal-7.JPG

... accompanied by a Cocktail La Pressee - Grand Marnier Titanium, lemon juice, simple syrup, raspberries and sparkling wine.

french-family-meal-6.JPG

Everyone at the table agreed the cheese sticks were light and tasty and the cocktail was flavorful. It went down way too easily!!!!

We also had lovely warm French rolls to accompany our meal.

french-family-meal-8.JPG

Next was Quiche Lorraine - traditional Quiche Lorraine with ham and cheese.

french-family-meal-9.JPG
french-family-meal-10.JPG

This was paired with a 2014, Vouvray, Val de Loire.

french-family-meal-12.JPG
french-family-meal-11.JPG

You might be thinking, big deal, quiche, but as each of us savored the first bites we all commented on the lightness and flavorful blend of the Gruyere cheese and ingredients. We were all pleasantly surprised how much we enjoyed the wine. The side salad had a delightful light dressing of mustard, oil and vinegar. The Vouvray was an excellent choice with the quiche.

Our main course was the Blanquette de veau en cocotte Le Creuset - White veal ragout served with rice, carrots, mushrooms and baby onions. It was paired with a Chinon, Le Haut de Presle, Marquis de Goulain, 2014.

Eric likened the Blanquette to a stew and said this is a very old family tradition. He encouraged us to simply add the rice to the mixture before we began tasting.

french-family-meal-13.JPG

The Blanquette, served in a hot Le Cresuset (pot), was very rich and creamy. The veal and the vegetables melded together in a most delicious ragout. While I enjoyed the flavors, I stopped eating long before my table-mates due to the heaviness and richness; most of them ate the entire dish.

french-family-meal-14.JPG
french-family-meal-15.JPG

Eric explained that since most people in the room enjoy red wine, he paired the Blanquette with a Chinon. He described it as light, crisp and full of ripe fruit. Personally, I didn't care for it at all, though it tasted a bit better with the Blanquette. I don't think any of us were fans and no one finished their glass. The earlier Vouvray would have paired much better.

french-family-meal-16.JPG
french-family-meal-17.JPG

Next up our Fromage or cheese course. We we served a creamy wedge of Brie, accompanied by walnuts, grapes and a walnut raisin bread (which takes 2 days to make). The bread and grapes really went well with the Brie, which I spread on the bread, and enjoyed.

This was paired with a Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chateau de Ricaud, 2012. I and my tablemates enjoyed the Bordeux.

french-family-meal-18.JPG

Finally Dessert! Oh my, all of us were so full and weren't sure we would have room, but surprisingly we all managed several tastes. The Macaron a'l'ancienne was a light almond macaron that sandwiched a bitter chocolate mousse; a side of hazelnut ice cream which was on top of a thin layer of crushed hazelnuts, all plated with a vanilla and chocolate sauce.

french-family-meal-20.JPG

The dessert was paired with a sparkling wine, Cremant de Bourgogne, JCB21, N.V. The wine was a perfect refreshing finish to conclude our French Family Meal.

french-family-meal-21.JPG

The entire Kitchen and Server team gathered at the conclusion of our meal and they all received a hearty applause.

french-family-meal-5.JPG

The Verdict: I enjoyed the lunch. Sometimes it is good to step out of your comfort zone. In my opinion this event is well worth the $95+ price and I highly recommend it. Everyone at the table agreed!

As of the time of this writing, there are still tickets available on most dates for the French Family Lunch.

WHERE: Monsieur Paul, France pavilion in Epcot
WHEN: Select Fridays and Sundays from noon to 3:30 p.m.

MENU Each weekend has a new menu, however the Friday and Sunday meals are the same menu.

PRICE: $95 per person plus tax, gratuity included

DISCLOSURE: I was an invited media guest of Walt Disney World at this event, but this did not affect my review. My opinions are my own.

Collectibles for a Cause - Themed Auctions

Deb's Digest Blog

It's October and that means it's Breast Cancer Awareness month! Since 2001, I have participated in over 15 Avon Walks to fight Breast Cancer. Just this week I learned of a Disney friend who I thought had won the battle and very sadly, turns out, she very recently passed.

Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar aka Because We Can Day - Quick Review

Deb's Digest Blog

Sometimes it is good to be spontaneous. Last Sunday we were home working and friends said, "hey we are going to Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar "-- do you want to come?" And at first I'm like "oh I have too much to do, I don't think so". But then thought about several loved ones going thru really difficult health times and I thought.. you know what we can so we should.

Hence - Because we can day!

jock-lindseys-hangar-bar-169.jpg

We had just been to Disney Springs the week before and in that short amount of time, roads have changed as has the entry into the garage. (Note to self - FOLLOW the signs LOL). Love the garages, the lighted signs and dots make it easy to find parking. Crowds were everywhere by noonish on Sunday. Why not, it was a beautiful day.
Deb Koma did a comprehensive review of Jock Lindsey's and I have to say I agree with just about everything she said.

The themeing is awesome (based on a pilot who appeared in Indiana Jones), as you would expect from Walt Disney Imagineering. It looks just like a pilot hangout you'd see in the movies. There are lots of hidden gems on the wall, nodding to Iron Man, Star Wars, and of course the story of Jock.

jock-lindseys-hangar-bar-23.jpg

Our food was tasty, a little off the norm (but not so exotic you didn't want to try it) and flavorful. The small plates ranged from $8.99 - $14.99. We really liked the Tanis Tacos - A Lost City Specialty! Filled with Falafel, Shredded Lettuce, and Cucumber-Tomato Salad $9.49. Other popular menu items are the wings and sliders. Check out the menu HERE.

Service was excellent, thanks Courtney. She was attentive but not pushy and we didn't feel rushed. We were noshing on the food, enjoying our beverages and before we knew it over 2 hours had passed. We ran into several friends there who also were having a great time and enjoyed the food and atmosphere.

Place is small (150 seats for in and outside) . Indoor and covered outdoor seating. When we arrived there were no tables, within a few minutes a small area opened on Reggie the boat outside.

jock-lindseys-hangar-bar-31.jpg

Another 10 minutes a table for 4 opened up outside. Next thing we knew our friends had found a great table inside. As Deb Koma said in her review "Since it's open seating, this leads to people being forced to hover over tables, waiting for others to finish up."

Music was lively BUT you could have a conversation without shouting - loved that!

Our bill for 2 glasses of wine, 2 margaritas, and 3 menu items came to $75 with tax plus tip. If you want to buy the special drink glasses they are $15 each.

I liked Jock's much better than Trader Sam's, but that's like comparing apples and oranges. For what Trader Sam's is - it works but I think only if you are with other folks and up for a loud evening (sitting inside). Trader Sam's is a much more interactive experience. You can read my review of Trader Sams's HERE.

At Jock's it was a more friendly, warm atmosphere. I'll certainly return here. It's a great place to "hang out". Not sure when I'll get back to Trader Sam's.
