From the whimsical to the cosmopolitan, each venue in Europa is distinctly inspired by the very best in European travel.

Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival Opens

Deb_banner.jpg

The 19th Annual Epcot Flower and Garden Festival opened on March 7th.

I spent several hours in Epcot and just scratched the surface on what to see this year.

The floral displays begin before you enter Epcot with the Fantasia mushrooms.

Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival

This year's grand entrance topiary is Sorcerer Mickey conducting Floral Magic.

Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival

Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival

First thing to do as you enter Epcot, is pick up a Flower and Garden Festival Guide Map and the new Topiary Scavenger Hunt flyer. I didn't see any Scavanger Hunt flyers at the main entrance, but did find them at the Information Booth (back side of pin store). You can also download your own!

FlowerGarden-brochure-rack

There is also a mobile website called Epcot in Bloom: http://m.epcotinbloom.com. You can look at it from home but certain features can only be unlocked when you scan a QR code inside Epcot. There are 12 audio tour locations and 14 topiaries that have QR codes.

Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival Mobile Map

I liked the map feature of the mobile app. Also, if you are new to Epcot's Flower and Garden festival the audio tour provides interesting information. While it is true the there is in-depth information on the topiaries, the photos are from previous festivals so don't get confused if the photos don't match the locations in the app. Would be great if the photos were updated now that the topiaries are on display.

Here's more information on the Epcot in Bloom Mobile app!

Bambi's Butterfly House
is always a favorite with adults and kids. This year it has moved across the way and is larger than before. It can get crowded in here which can make stroller and wheelchair maneuvering difficult.

Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival

There is a butterfly identification poster at each end of the exhibit. It is great to know what you are actually seeing. The butterflies are quite plentiful and found my bright yellow shirt particularly interesting. Several landed on me, briefly.

Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival

This is a Mangrove Buckeye butterfly.

Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival

The ever popular Bambi, Flower and Thumper topiaries are now in the Butterfly house.

Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival

As you make your way to towards World Showcase, the fab 5 as farmers and gardeners greet you!

Epcot's Flower and Garden Festival

New this year is the Haiti exhibit. Be sure to check it out, there are even Haitian beverages for sale!

Be sure to check out the Flower and Garden Festival Kids Activities blog

AllEars will be bringing you lots more photos and information about this year's Flower and Garden Festival so be sure to check back for updates on our website!

Now, sit back, relax and enjoy a 10 minute tour of the Festival:

Storybook Circus Fantasyland Expansion Soft Opens Today

Deb_banner.jpg

The much anticipated first phase of the Fantasyland Expansion began soft openings today in the Magic Kingdom. Phase I consists of the brand new Dumbo, the rethemed Goofy's Barnstormer into the Great Goofini, and the reopening of the Fantasyland Train Station!

Fantasyland Expansion Storybook Circus

Soft openings mean the attractions have not officially opened and may be open or closed depending on imagineers and Disney. This is the period to make sure everything is working correctly and the Cast Member's training is fine tuned. The area may be open during park hours, or only during portions of the day; one attraction may be open and the other closed.

There has been so much interest and hype about the Fantasyland Expansion, not to mention we've been hearing about it for 2 years, that I wondered what my reaction would be.

Despite how crowded the area was, including waits of over 1 hour for both Dumbo and Goofy I was able to walk around and look at the themeing. It is amazing! The attention to detail is everything I expect from Imagineers and it did not disappoint.

.... from the trash cans, to the Cast Member Costumes, to the peanuts and animal prints in the pavement to the nod to Carolwood at the Train Station - it was all great.

Here are just a few of the photos I captured today. Many more to come in the future.

Go take a look for yourself and let me know what you think. If Phase I is any indication of the rest of the expansion, families will love it!!! Keep in mind this is a small area that is can be very congested.

Coming later in the season will be the interactive queue for Dumbo, the 2 tents, one a merchandise area and one a themed character meet and greet. There is also the Be Our Guest Restaurant, Belle's Village and Gaston's Tavern, Prince Erik's Castle which will house the Little Mermaid ride (identical inside to Disney California Adventure) and the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Be sure to also check out Jack Spence's blog on the new area!

What's New on the Disney Fantasy? The Muppet Adventure Game!

Deb_banner.jpg

I know a lot of you are wondering what's so special about Disney's newest cruise ship, the Fantasy -- what's new about it, and what makes it different from its sister ship, the Disney Dream? Deb Koma and I will be writing about those differences for the next several days, as we try to recap our experiences from our three-night media preview cruise on the Fantasy.

The Midship Detective Agency is an interactive "mystery" game which involves the Enchanted Art found on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

Midship Detective Agency Muppet Adventure

This is a game the entire family can play - together or alone! It debuted in 2011 on the Disney Dream to rave reviews by cruisers of all ages. It's a fun adventure that takes you from one end of the ship to the other as you try to solve the Mystery! Two mysteries are available on the Disney Dream.

New on the Disney Fantasy is a third mystery, "The Case of the Stolen Show" starring the Muppets.

Midship Detective Agency Muppet Adventure

Start out on Deck 5 Midship or Deck 2 at the Midship Detective Agency self-serve Kiosk.

Midship Detective Agency Muppet Adventure

Pick up your game card, ship map and instructions.

Midship Detective Agency Muppet Adventure

Each Detective Badge card has a 2D barcode, read by the camera, resulting in interaction with the Enchanted Art. Be sure to keep your Detective Badge with you through out the cruise! It is coded with a unique number and keeps track of where you are in the game. By playing with the same card you can experience the games over and over with a different culprit each time.

Midship Detective Agency Muppet Adventure

Each game features several possible endings and multiple randomized events - so each time you play you have a different adventure.

The games are available to play at your leisure. At the end of the introduction video (see below) you'll be sent to your first location.

Midship Detective Agency Muppet Adventure

After that, you can play the game in any order that you please. The adventure will take you all over the Disney Fantasy. If you wish to play the game all at once, allow approximately 90 minutes.

Your task is to help Kermit and Pepe find the missing show props so they can put on their latest production!

The new Muppet Adventure also adds new physical props to game. Pepe not only took over the Detective agency from Mickey, but he is sailing on the Disney Fantasy.

Be sure to visit Pepe's cabin door. You have to find it as part of your detective hunt. There are clues on the door that are integrated into the adventure (tip: take a photo of his door when you see it because you may need to refer back later in the adventure) Also, be sure to call Pepe's Wave Phone!!!

pepecabin.JPG

Notes and Tips

Playing the game is a fantastic way to get to know the ship as well as seeing the amazing enchanted art! Before you activate your game card take a few minutes to watch the Enchanted Art come to life.

The game operates daily but generally closes around 10pm each evening (check at guest services for times during your cruise).

On Deck 5 outside the Buena Vista Theatre is a "call board" with additional clues for the game.

The game will be most crowded during Sea Days, so plan accordingly.

Muppet fans will enjoy seeing some favorite characters not often seen today.

Don't think this game is just for kids and families! You'll see many adults playing the game too.

If someone is at the Enchanted Art when you get there, no worries! There are multiple sequences that play and you won't see the same one as the person in front of you.

The Muppet Adventure was shot last October/November with the Muppet Team.

The game was play tested in Glendale, CA. Hundreds of kids were brought in to the mock-up in a warehouse. The Imagineers found it quite interesting to see how they reacted to the various segments.

From a technology standpoint, once the core game was developed it became easier add additional segments. The software is very flexible.

At this point, there are no plans to add the Muppet Adventure to the Dream, but if the decision is made, it would be possible to do so.

Special thanks to Imagineers Bob Zalk (Senior Show Producer and Director) as well as Karen Leung (Interactive Show Producer Associate).

What's New on the Disney Fantasy? Special Water Features!

Deb_banner.jpg

I know a lot of you are wondering what's so special about Disney's newest cruise ship, the Fantasy -- what's new about it, and what makes it different from its sister ship, the Disney Dream? Deb Koma and I are blogging about those differences as we try to recap our experiences from our three-night media preview cruise on the Fantasy.

The Disney Fantasy has added several new water features for guests to enjoy.

1) Satellite Falls is a great addition to the adult only water areas. Located on Deck 13 forward near the Currents Bar, this brand-new water feature is a circular splash pool with benches and a gently falling rain curtain that provides cool comfort. You can sit inside the rain curtain or outside of it. The water from the rain curtain felt oh so refreshing. In the adjacent areas, soak up the sun in loungers or relax in the shade under a canopy.

Satellite Falls Sun Deck

Satellite Falls Sun Deck

Satellite Falls Sun Deck

2) The new Wading Pool is located on Deck 12 and available to all cruisers. There is a small water fountain in the pool. You have to step into the pool. An adult will have to lift a toddler or small child inside.

Deck 12 Wading Pool

There are some shaded areas on the far sides of the wading pool as well as some lounge chairs. Also, a small stage area in the immediate area for low-key live entertainment (like a guitar player).

Deck 12 Wading Pool

The one odd thing about this wading pool is that it overlooks the quiet adult pool area. In the photo below, the wading pool is on the bottom right and the adult pool is one deck below in the bottom center area.

Deck 12 Wading Pool

3) Aqua Lab is the brand new play area on Deck 12 near the Aqua Duck. As the story goes, AquaLab was created by Donald Duck's nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie, and features a variety of water "experiments" designed to drench the whole family.

AquaLab

This area offers lots of fun ways for everyone to get wet. You can experience everything from a leaky wall, spurting pipes, sprays from the Ducky Dinghy suspended overhead and the spinning buckets of Donald DuckBoy that tip over full of water. Hundreds of gallons of water a minute leak throughout the play area. Everything is timed for a wide variety of experiences and water spurts out when you least expect it.

What's New on the Disney Fantasy? - New Entertainment!

To accommodate passengers on the 7 Night Cruise, the Disney Fantasy offers an expanded live entertainment line-up in the magnificant Walt Disney Theatre.

The Walt Disney Theater seats 1,340 people with seating in both the orchestra and balcony. While the theatre reflects the luxurious show places of old, the technology used is one of the most advanced anywhere!

Fantasy_walt-disney-theatre1.JPG

The lineup of musicals presented at the Disney Fantasy Walt Disney Theatre includes "Disney
Wishes," "Disney's Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular," "Disney's Believe," "A Fantasy Come
True" and "An Unforgettable Journey."

Our preview cruise was only 3 nights so we did not see all the shows. Check back after the Maiden Voyage when Laura Gilbreath and myself can provide more comments.

blue line

Disney's Believe

Disney's Believe debuted last year when the Disney Dream came online. In this charming father-daughter story, workaholic Dr. Greenaway learns about the power of belief with the help of some magical Disney characters.

Disney's Believe

The 50-minute show includes original musical compositions as well as classic Disney music from movies like Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, and Pocahontas. Impressively staged production numbers combine music and choreography with magical special effects. I was told changes have been made to the show for the Fantasy.

Disney's Believe

Here's a behind the scenes look at Believe prior to its debut on the Disney Dream.

"Disney Wishes"

Disney's Wishes

Disney Wishes
is brand new for the Disney Fantasy written by Kristen Childs who also wrote Believe.

This 45-minute musical journey is about three best friends who discover the secret to being a grown-up is staying connected to their inner child.

The story begins as long-time best friends Kayla and Nicole along with Nicole's twin brother
Brandon visit Disneyland to celebrate their high school graduation. Each is unsure of what the
future holds for them, so they make a wish to go on the "Ride of Our Lives" - the show's original
opening number.

Their wish evokes an enchanted world where a cavalcade of Disney characters - including
Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, Lilo, Stitch, Mulan, Hercules, Pinocchio, Timon and Pumbaa -
materialize to guide the teens through their magical journey.

Disney's Wishes

The thing I love most about Wishes is that it brings to light Disney characters and songs you either have not seen in quite a while or in a new "updated" fashion.

For me, the best part of the show is the song from Pinocchio entitled, "I've Got No Strings". Some might argue the best song is the Hawaiian Roller Coaster song with Lilo and Stitch, which also is performed masterfully.

Disney's Wishes

Disney's Wishes

I smiled watching King Louie and the Monkeys perform a high-energy swing band version of "I Wanna Be Like You" from the Jungle Book. When is the last time your saw King Louie in a show?! (Jungle Book which debuted when Animal Kingdom opened perhaps?)

Disney's Wishes

The beginning of the show is a tad slow as the characters are introduced. I also feel a serious tweek is needed to the Lion King and Hercules segments. That said, I would definitely see the show if you haven't before!

The show concludes with "Breakthrough" from the Disney Channel movie Lemonade Mouth!

Here's a behind the scenes look at the development of Wishes

blue line

"Disney's Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular"

The brand new Aladdin show is based on the Aladdin show which premiered January 2003 in the Hyperion Theatre in Disney California Adventure. During this Broadway-style production, guests laugh along with the wisecracking Genie and the characters from the classic animated Disney film "Aladdin."

This is the Do-Not-Miss block buster show on the Disney Fantasy!

Disney's Aladdin

Once again, Aladdin is the "street rat" of Agrabah meeting a Genie who grants him three wishes, battling the evil Jafar, and falling in love with Princess Jasmine.

Disney's Aladdin

Disney's Aladdin

Don't miss the Magic Carpet scene when technology and state-of-the-art projections send Jasmine and Aladdin to "A Whole New World".

blue line

The final two stage productions are new for the Disney Fantasy. I hope to see them in the future.

"A Fantasy Come True" Welcome Show - is a 45-minute, high-energy, multimedia musical production that follows one family's journey as they discover the amazing experiences and enchanting surprises that await them aboard the Disney Fantasy. Ultimately, they learn the greatest experience the ship has to offer is the opportunity to make memories - together as a family - that will last a lifetime.

"An Unforgettable Journey" Farewell Show is a good-bye hug in the form of a 45-minute musical production that allows guests to reflect and savor the experience they have had onboard the Disney Fantasy. This farewell show connects the guests' experiences to the man who started it all - Walt Disney - through audio and video clips that steep the memorable moments and distinctly Disney touches in Walt's words and wisdom.

Let me know what you think of the new shows on the Disney Fantasy!

All Aboard the Disney Fantasy Cruise Ship

Deb_banner.jpg

Again? Didn't you just do this Deb?

Yes, again.. allow me to explain. When the Disney Fantasy cruises were announced I knew I wanted to be on one of the first ones to see for myself and get information for you too! I immediately booked the Maiden Voyage (all expenses paid be me).

I never assume I will receive an invitation to a Disney media event. So, I plan accordingly and make my own arrangements for coverage. When I do get invited to a Disney Media event - all the better as there are usually special opportunities and imagineers to talk with. So, when the invitation came earlier this year to be part of the Disney Fantasy Preview Cruise (expenses paid by Disney), I happily rsvp'd!

Since our return on Monday, Deb Koma and I have been blogging to highlight the major differences between the Disney Dream and her newer sister ship, the Disney Fantasy. We also were busy getting menus for the various restaurants.

Now is time for the official Maiden Voyage of the Disney Fantasy. Maiden Voyages can be a mixed bag of sorts. It is going to be the first time the ship is sold out and running the 7 night itinerary. While crew have been fine tuning for weeks now, nothing is quite the same as when 4,000 people are board. The key is patience and flexibility while the kinks continue to get worked out.

This time, Disney did a very smart thing and offered Maiden Voyage merchandise in advance! We are very excited to get our items and hope to wear them at the sail away. For the Disney Dream, this did not happen and well, it was chaotic to put it mildly.

I'm looking forward to having more time to explore the ship, see the shows and experience a brand new ship with friends on board and with you through photos.

Laura Gilbreath and I will be tweeting and blogging as the internet allows.

Hope you'll stay tuned.....
