Quest for the West - Preparing for the Adventure!

My first Adventure by Disney trip, The American Southwest, took place in 2007! http://land.allears.net/blogs/debwills/adventures_by_disney/american_southwest/ It was such a fantastic trip, I knew I would do another Adventure someday.

Monument Valley

Over a year ago, I decided to co-host an adult only Adventure by Disney called Quest for the West with Beci Mahnken of MouseFanTravel! It seems like forever ago when I made my deposit, but the time is finally approaching.

Joining me on this journey is fellow AllEars teammate Linda, Mike and Mary Newell (MouseWorldRadio, and the WDWToday Podcast), Beci and approximately 30 other folks who decided to journey to Wyoming! I'm sure you'll meet some of them during our trip report blogs!

This Adventure is 6 nights long and features both Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons -- two National Parks that have been on my wish list.

One important item I will be sure to pack is my Passport to the National Parks.

Passport to National Parks

This is a great souvenir and it only costs $8. You can purchase them online or at any National Park Visitor Center. The size is similar to a regular passport but thicker. Inside the United States is set into regions and there is a listing of the National Parks in that area. Spaces in each region are designated for you to collect rubber stamp cancellations at each national park site you visit. The cancellations, similar to those received in an international passport, record the name of the park and the date you visited. The cancellations are free.

I got mine in 1994 (I only wish I obtained it when I first started visiting the parks). Along the way, I have acquired a book full of "stamps" and great memories of the places I've traveled and the exact date of when I was there. I highly recommend purchasing one, it's for Kids and Adults!!!

Here are some images from my National Parks Passport.

This first is from Ellis Island in New York. The photo "stamp" on the top of the page adds not only a photo but some information about the location. These are available for purchase if you want, I think they are $1.25 each. I like to include them for the places I have visited to add to the journal.

Passport to National Parks

This next photo is a great example of why I love my National Parks Passport. On the left side you can see that I was in Yosemite National Park in July of 1994. On the right side, are the stamps from the Grand Canyon that I obtained on my first Adventures by Disney to the Southwest in 2007.

Passport to National Parks

Our adventure officially begins on August 25th - our meeting place is the Jackson Hole Airport in Wyoming. One of the guides will transport us from the airport to the Wort Hotel. We will be staying there for two nights. Our 2nd hotel is the Old Faithful Snow Lodge at Yellowstone National Park and we conclude at the Brooks Lake Lodge.

Highlights during our Adventure will include whitewater rafting on the Snake River, a hike to Hidden Falls, visiting Old Faithful and the Fountain Paint Pot Trail, the Grand Tetons, Horseback riding and more.

How to Follow the Adventure!
In the past, I have attempted to do daily blogs on my trips. It's become very hard to do on a daily basis and, while I have finished a number of them, I haven't finished them all.

This time, we have THREE ways you can follow us! With new social networking, we plan to do something a little different.

TWITTER
There is a program called "Twitpic" that allows one to send photos via a mobile phone directly to Twitter. Mike Newell, Beci Mahnken, and myself will be posting photos "live" via the Twitter network.

Deb Wills: http://twitter.com/AllEarsDeb

We also have our twitter accounts transmitting automatically to our Facebook accounts. So those of you who are "friends" can follow our adventures that way!

BLOGS

At the same time, AllEars team members Jack Marshall and Debbie Koma will be back home copying our Twitter photos and combining them into one daily blog. So, you can follow us either here, on Twitter or on Facebook. We'll post a link on the splash page of AllEars when the blogging begins!

We have been told that there are areas where we will travel that have limited, if any, cell phone service, but we'll make it up once we get service back.

I hope this provides some cool ways for you to follow us on the adventure of a lifetime, an Adventure by Disney to Wyoming!

Oh, and Linda and I will be heading out a few days early and staying in Wyoming. If we have cell service, we will start posting photos!

Quest for the West - Pre-Adventure Fun

Jackson Hole Wyoming, the start of our Adventures by Disney just happens to be over 5,500 feet above sea level. We decided in order to make the most of our Adventure, we would head out to Wyoming a few days before the Adventure actually begins. By doing so, we can adjust to the time change and the high altitude and also enjoy the area.

I researched all over the internet (using sites such as tripadvisor) to find a resort that would offer dining, relaxation and excursions. We hope we found just such a place. Our plans include a dawn wildlife safari, an early morning nature hike and an astronomy evening. Joining us at the ranch will be our friends Tod and Sue.

The two National Parks we will be spending time at before and during our Adventures by Disney are The Grand Teton and Yellowstone!

The Grand Teton

The Grand Tetons

"Did you know that Grand Teton National Park was established in both 1929 and 1950? The original 1929 park protected the mountain peaks and the lakes near the base. The boundaries were later expanded in 1950 to include much of the adjacent valley floor. " Quote and photo from http://www.nps.gov/grte/

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park

"Did you know that prior to the establishment of the National Park Service, the U.S. Army protected Yellowstone between 1886 and 1918. Fort Yellowstone was established at Mammoth Hot Springs for that purpose." Quote and photo from http://www.nps.gov/yell

By the time you read this blog, Linda and I should be on our way to Jackson Wyoming. We catch up with the Adventures by Disney group on Tuesday!

During our pre-stay, we will be uploading twitter feeds and photos as time allows.

Quest for the West - Day Three

Dateline August 27, 2009

Today's Theme: Yellowstone Journey

The Itinerary:

We say goodbye to the Wort Hotel and Jackson and head to the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. A bit of history regarding the Grand Teton:

"The original Grand Teton National Park, set aside by an act of Congress in 1929, included only the Teton Ridge and 6 glacial lakes at the base of the mountains. The Jackson Hole National Monument, decreed by FDR through presidential proclamation in 1943, combined the Teton National Forest acerage, other federal properties, inlcuding Jackson Lake, and a generous 35,000 acre donation by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The Rockefeller lands continued to be privately held until December 16, 1949 when impasse for additon to the national park was resolved. On September 14, 1950, the original 1929 Park and the 1943 National Monument (including Rockefeller's donation) were united into a "new" Grand Teton National Park, creating present day boundries."
(quoted from the National Park Service website)

Our first activity is to board the Jenny Lake Ferry and some hiking! Jenny Lake has a visitor center, so hopefully we can get our National Parks Passports "stamped".

Jenny Lake is 2.2 miles long, 1.2 miles wide and estimate to have depths of 260 feet.

The Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point hike is over natural terrain, steep inclines and we will climb around 400 feet. Our elevation at Inspiration Point is 7,200 feet!

After our hike we have a picnic lunch at String Lake to rest a bit.

Then we are off to Yellowstone National Park.

First stop is the West Thumb Geyser Basin. "West Thumb Geyser Basin is one of the smallest geyser basins in Yellowstone yet its location along the shore of Yellow-stone Lake ranks it as the most scenic. West Thumb derived its name from the thumb-like projection of Yellowstone Lake and the name was given by the 1870 Washburn Expedition. It was also known as Hot Spring Camp. West Thumb has less geyser activity than other basins. But West Thumb, for its size, has it all-hot springs, pools, mud pots, fumaroles and lake shore geysers."

After that, on to our next hotel, the Old Faithful Snow Lodge at Yellowstone. After checking in and getting settled, we gather for our welcome dinner at the resort!

Quest for the West - Day Four

Dateline: August 28, 2009 Yellowstone National Park

Today's Theme: Trail Blazers

Today's Alternate Theme: All Good Things Must Come to an End, Sometimes Sooner than You Plan:

Deb: As you read this, Linda and I have sadly parted ways with our fellow adventurers and will soon be headed back East. Unfortunately, we are both suffering from "altitude sickness". On Wednesday afternoon we went to the Urgent Care Clinic to get things checked out. We each saw a different doctor and were both strongly advised not to go into higher elevations. Sadly for us, that means we are unable to continue our Adventure and travel to Yellowstone. The decision itself was not too difficult to make. After all, each of us must take care of ourselves and do what is best for our health. That said, it was also a very emotional decision.

Thursday morning at breakfast we spent time with each member of our Adventure group - saying goodbye. While only spending just a couple days together, we had already begun to connect and really really enjoy each other's company. What an amazing and wonderful group of folks to travel with. Special thank you to our Adventure Guides Daniel and Landon -- you guys are awesome and we so appreciate all you did! We hope everyone on the trip continues to have the time of their lives!

So, with all that said, Deb's photos have come to an end, but the Quest for the West blog continues! Follow each day as Beci and Mike post photos and continue the Adventure by Disney Quest for the West.

The Itinerary

Breakfast and Lunch are part of our Adventure today. After breakfast we are off to see Old Faithful at Yellowstone!

Lunch and then the Fountain Paint Pot Trail. There are fumaroles (steam vents), blue pools, pink mudpots and mini-geysers along the trail.

Back to the hotel and we are on our own for dinner and the evening.

Here are some facts about Yellowstone National Park (from the National Park Service website):
Established March 1, 1872, Yellowstone is the first and oldest national park.
It is the 2nd largest national park in the contiguous 48 United States, Death Valley National Park is larger.
96% of the park is in Wyoming, 3% in Montana, and 1% in Idaho.
The highest point is 11,358 ft at Eagle Peak.
Yellowstone is larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined.

There is a program called "Twitpic" that allows one to send photos via a mobile phone directly to Twitter. Mike Newell and Beci Mahnken will be posting photos "live" via the Twitter network.

FACEBOOK
We also have our twitter accounts transmitting automatically to our Facebook accounts. So those of you who are "friends" can follow our adventures that way!

BLOGS

At the same time, AllEars team members Jack Marshall and Debbie Koma will be back home copying our Twitter photos and combining them this daily blog. So, you can follow us either here, on Twitter or on Facebook.

We have been told that there are areas where we will travel that have limited, if any, cell phone service, but we'll make it up once we get service back.

I hope this provides some cool ways for you to follow us on the adventure of a lifetime, an Adventure by Disney to Wyoming!
